Chapter 56. Makeover and unexpected confessionsChapter 56: 56. Makeover and unexpected confessions
AT THE SAME TIME
XAVIER
"DING."The system suddenly flickered back to life.
Everyone froze.
"Don’t." I slowly looked up.
"EMERGENCY APPEARANCE RECALIBRATION DETECTED. REINCARNATOR EARTH-DATA COMPATIBILITY: 100%. XAVIER AND ELENA: MAKEOVER INITIATED."A system said.
"What?!"I gasped before a bright glow suddenly surrounded me.
Warmth swept through my body, and my hair shifted first, becoming fuller and softer. My facial features subtly sharpened, my eyes becoming brighter, while my entire appearance somehow became closer to the person I remembered seeing in the mirror back on Earth. The glow disappeared and I immediately grabbed a polished metal decoration from the throne room and stared at my reflection.
"What happened to me?"I asked.
Ana’s jaw dropped, Hin blinked and Huan stared for several seconds.
"Xavier..."He began.
"What?"I asked.
"You look..." He struggled to find the word. "Really handsome."
"I look like me."I stared at my reflection.
"XAVIER EARTH APPEARANCE SUCCESSFULLY INTEGRATED. RESULT: ENHANCED APPEARANCE."The system chimed.
"You could have warned me!"I pointed at the screen.
"WARNING DEEMED UNNECESSARY."A system said.
"Unnecessary?!"I gasped.
"Wait! Why is it looking at me?!"Before I could complain further, Elena suddenly yelped.
"SECOND REINCARNATOR DETECTED. ELENA EARTH APPEARANCE DATA: FOUND. MAKEOVER INITIATED."The system turned toward her.
A shimmer surrounded Elena, her hair became more elegant, her features softened and refined, and her Earth appearance blended naturally with Mei Lin’s body.
When the glow vanished, Han Jin simply stared.
"Han Jin?"Elena slowly turned toward him.
He immediately looked away, his ears were bright red.
"He is blushing!"Ana gasped.
"I am not."Han Jin said.
"You absolutely are."She said.
"You’re blushing because of me?"Elena grinned.
"I was merely surprised."Han Jin cleared his throat.
"MATE REACTION DETECTED. HAN JIN EMBARRASSMENT: 89%."The system instantly betrayed him.
The throne room erupted with laughter. Even the Empress Dowager was wiping tears from her eyes.
"Why does it keep exposing everyone?"I stared at the system.
"SYSTEM RESPONSE: ENTERTAINMENT VALUE."A system said.
I froze.
"You have got to be kidding me."I gasped.
Lang Li quietly looked at me again, his golden eyes lingered for a moment, then he smiled faintly. I immediately felt my face heat up.
The Empress Dowager noticed.
"Oh, this makeover was definitely worthwhile."She said.
"Please stop."I said.
"I said nothing."She smiled innocently.
"MAKEOVER COMPLETE. XAVIER: EARTH APPEARANCE INTEGRATION 100%. ELENA: EARTH APPEARANCE INTEGRATION 100%. PLOT STATUS: SOMEHOW MORE COMPLICATED."The system flickered one final time.
"I don’t even want to ask how."Huan stared at the screen.
"Neither do I."I sighed.
The laughter slowly faded, Song Hue, however, remained unusually quiet. His red eyes moved from me to Lang Li, then back to me. Finally, he stood up.
"Then I have a question."He said.
The room fell silent as I looked at him.
"What?"I asked.
"Who does Wei actually belong to?"Song Hue’s gaze remained fixed on Lang Li.
My eyes widened.
"Me..."Song Hue continued calmly. He glanced toward me. "Or Lang Li?"
The Empress Dowager slowly lowered her teacup.
"Oh, here we go."Ana whispered.
Lang Li’s golden eyes immediately locked onto Song Hue. His expression became completely still, too still. Song Hue didn’t look away.
"I remember Wei from before he entered the Lycan Empire."He said.
"And I know what was taken from us."Lang Li’s jaw tightened.
I swallowed.
"Wei isn’t something either of us owns."Lang Li finally spoke.
"I didn’t ask who owns him."Song Hue’s eyes narrowed. He looked directly at me. "I asked who he belongs with."
Lang Li’s stare sharpened as the entire room became painfully quiet. I looked between them.
"Can we please not turn me into a royal custody dispute?"I asked.
"Too late."Huan quietly muttered.
"Personally, I think Xavier should answer."The Empress Dowager looked delighted.
"Your Majesty!"I gasped.
"What? I am curious too."She smiled.
"I don’t even know the answer myself."I rubbed my forehead.
"I think there’s a misunderstanding."
"What misunderstanding?"Song Hue raised an eyebrow.
"I am not gay." I said calmly.
Everyone stared at me.
"What does that mean?"Huan slowly looked at Mei Lin.
"Right. You don’t have those terms here."Mei Lin immediately sighed. She stood and calmly explained. "Straight means a person is romantically or sexually attracted to the opposite gender. Gay means a person is attracted to the same gender."
Everyone slowly nodded as I pointed at myself.
"I’m straight. I like women."I said calmly.
"Then why have you been blushing around Lang Li?"Song Hue looked genuinely confused.
I opened my mouth then closed it.
"That’s..." I glanced toward Lang Li. He was staring at me too. "I don’t know!"
Ana covered her mouth, trying not to laugh.
"Being attracted to women doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t develop complicated feelings for someone else."Mei Lin smiled.
"Thank you for making this worse."I groaned.
"DING!" The enormous system screen suddenly appeared.
"No."I immediately froze.
"RELATIONSHIP STATUS."A new screen appeared.
"System, don’t you dare."I ordered.
"LANG LI and WEI: 55%. WEI and LANG LI: 60%. SONG HUE and WEI: 21%" The system showed again.
Moments later, the entire room became silent.
"I hate this thing."I stared at the screen.
"Your numbers seem to disagree with your speech."Ana whispered.
"ANA!"I gasped.
Song Hue stared at the numbers, then at me, Mei Lin slowly covered her smile.
"That proves absolutely nothing!"I pointed at the system.
"SYSTEM: HOST DENIAL DETECTED."The system showed response again.
"STOP."I groaned.
The screen disappeared.
"Honestly, I think the system just enjoys embarrassing you." Huan quietly muttered.
"I know."I sighed.
And somehow, that was even worse.
The throne room gradually returned to normal after the system disappeared. Everyone pretended they hadn’t seen the numbers. Nobody was convincing, especially not Lang Li. He waited until the others became distracted before stepping closer to me.
"Wei."He began.
"Yes?"I looked up.
"That number."His voice dropped.
"What number?"My stomach sank.
"The sixty percent."He began.
"Oh."I immediately looked away.
"What does it mean?"He asked.
"Something the system measures."I hesitated.
"Measures what?"He asked.
"Affection, I guess."I rubbed the back of my neck.
"Affection?"Lang Li’s eyebrows lifted.
"Yes."I said.
"Then sixty percent means you..."He was silent for a moment. He stopped as I could see the question forming.
"It means I care about you."I sighed.
"More than half?"Lang Li stared at me.
"Apparently."I nearly laughed.
"And mine was fifty five."His expression softened.
"Yes."I nodded.
"So you care about me more than I care about you."A tiny smile appeared on his face.
"Do not make this competitive."I immediately pointed at him.
"I wasn’t."He said.
"You absolutely were."I said.
He quietly laughed. Then his expression became gentler.
"Still..." He looked at me for a moment. "Thank you for telling me."
My face warmed as I looked away.
"Don’t make it weird."I said.
"I won’t."He said. "Probably."
"Lang Li."I groaned.
He smiled, and for some reason, hearing him laugh made that ridiculous sixty percent feel much more real.
