Song Hue took another step into the room and I immediately took one step backward. He took another step as I took another.
"Why are you backing away?" Song Hue asked.
"Because you’re approaching me."I said.
"That seems reasonable."He said.
"Then why are you still approaching?"I asked.
"I hadn’t considered that."He paused.
I stared at him, Lang Li, meanwhile, hadn’t moved. That was somehow worse. His posture was perfectly calm, his golden eyes fixed on Song Hue, but his expression had become noticeably colder as Song Hue finally noticed. He stopped, and is eyes moved from me to Lang Li, then back to me, then to Lang Li again.
"Oh."He whispered.
I swallowed.
"Oh what?"I asked.
"He’s angry."Song Hue pointed toward the Emperor.
"I am not angry."Lang Li smiled politely.
"You look angry."Song Hue raised an eyebrow.
"I am simply standing."Lang Li said.
"You are standing aggressively."Song Hue added.
I covered my mouth to stop myself from laughing.
"Standing aggressively?"Lang Li’s eyes narrowed.
"Yes."Song Hue said.
"How does one accomplish that?" Lan Li asked.
"Like that."Song Hue demonstrated by straightening his shoulders and crossing his arms.
"I see."Lang Li stared at him.
He copied the pose. Now both princes were standing there with crossed arms, glaring at each other.
"Are you two seriously competing over who can stand more intimidatingly?"I looked between them.
Neither answered.
"Ding." The system appeared. "ROYAL STANDOFF DETECTED. Lang Li jealousy: 91%. Song Hue jealousy: 87%. Wei confusion: 100%."
"That last one is accurate."I pointed at the screen.
"May I speak with you?"Song Hue looked at me.
"No."Lang Li immediately stepped between us.
"I wasn’t asking you."Song Hue blinked.
"I know."Lang Li said.
"Then move."Song Hue said.
"No."Lang Li shook his head annoyed.
"This is going to be a very long night."I sighed.
I stared at Lang Li and Song Hue for another three seconds, then I made a decision.
"Nope."I said loudly.
Both princes looked at me in surprise.
"What?" Lang Li asked.
"I am leaving."I said calmly.
"Wei..." Song Hue began.
"No." I pointed at both of them. "You two can have your dramatic prince staring contest without me."
I turned around and marched toward the door. Neither stopped me, probably because both were too busy glaring at each other. I stepped into the corridor, then immediately bumped into someone.
"Ow!" I stumbled backward. "Sorry!"
I looked up and saw Hin and Ana beside her. Both were staring at me, and neither said anything.
"How long have you two been standing there?"I slowly narrowed my eyes.
"We just arrived."Ana smiled innocently.
"Absolutely."Hin nodded.
"You saw everything."I stared at them.
"Everything."Ana’s smile widened.
"How much is everything?"I asked.
"The hug."Hin thoughtfully raised one finger.
"The almost kiss."Ana raised another.
"The jealous prince."Hin added another.
"The second jealous prince."Ana added another.
"Please stop counting."I covered my face.
"I can not believe we were worried about your childhood memories this morning, and now we’re apparently supervising your love triangle."Ana burst out laughing.
"It is not a love triangle!"I groaned in disbelief.
"Then why were two princes fighting over you?"Hin glanced toward my room.
"They weren’t fighting."I said.
"They were aggressively standing."Ana tilted her head.
"The system called it a royal standoff."I groaned.
"Of course it did."Hin immediately laughed.
"Come on."Ana grabbed my arm.
"Where?"I asked.
"Somewhere with sweets."Ana smirked while pulling me away."
You have my attention."I blinked.
"We’re rescuing you from the princes."She said.
"And from your own system."Hin nodded solemnly.
"That may be impossible."I sighed.
"We’ll try anyway."Ana smiled.
As they dragged me down the corridor, I heard my bedroom door open behind us.
"Wei." I heard a male voice as we slowly turned.
Both Lang Li and Song Hue had stepped into the corridor. They were still glaring at each other.
"Never mind."Ana sighed.
"The princes have escaped."Hin nodded.
"I am done. I sleeping elsewhere. "II announced.
It was last thing I said before I ran off. I had a small hideout, and I rather freeze a bit than see them all once again. The next morning, I woke up determined to have a normal morning. No princes, no jealousy, no mysterious childhood memories, no unexpected royal guests. Most importantly, no system surprises. I walked into the kitchen, tied my apron, and looked around.
"Finally."I smiled.
"Ding."A system announced herself yet again.
"I spoke too soon."I froze.
"DAILY TASK AVAILABLE! TASK: PREPARE A SPECIAL BREAKFAST FOR THE IMPERIAL HOUSEHOLD. Difficulty: 2/5 stars. Objective: Create one new dish using at least three fresh ingredients. Time Limit: Until breakfast begins. Reward: +100 Moon coins. Bonus: +25 Moon coins if every royal guest approves."A system announced cheerfully.
"One hundred?"I stared as my eyes widened. "Finally! A task worth something!"
I immediately began planning. Three fresh ingredients, that shouldn’t be difficult. I grabbed vegetables, eggs, herbs, and flour.
"Wait." I looked toward the kitchen entrance. I saw none of the others, so I could actually cook in peace. I started mixing the dough.
"Wait, what visiting royal?"I asked.
The kitchen doors opened and I slowly turned. Princess Jan Win walked inside.
"Good morning, Prince Wei."She said.
"No."I sighed. "Why are you back?"
Behind her came two more familiar figures. Song Hue, and Lang Li. I opened my eyes and all three stood there.
"BONUS CONDITION: GOOD LUCK."The system flickered.
"You could at least pretend to help me."I stared at the screen.
"SYSTEM RESPONSE: Host is entertaining enough."A system said.
"Traitor."I sighed and I realized my supposedly peaceful breakfast had lasted approximately thirty seconds.
I took a deep breath, then another. If system plays dirty, I play even dirtier.
"No."I said.
"No?"Jan Win blinked.
"Everyone out."I pointed toward the door.
"Everyone?"Song Hue raised an eyebrow.
"Yes."I said as I pointed at him. "You." Then Jan Win.
"You." Then Lang Li. "And especially you."
"Me?"Lang Li actually looked offended.
"Yes, you."I said.
"But I am the Emperor."He said.
"And I am the person cooking your breakfast."I said plainly as I crossed my arms. "Which means I am the boss of this kitchen."
Song Hue covered his mouth, clearly trying not to laugh. Jan Win looked delighted as Lang Li stared at me. I stared back. Neither of us moved.
"SYSTEM OBSERVATION: HOST HAS ACTIVATED KITCHEN DOMINATION MODE."The system chimed.
"Shut up."I ordered.
"Very well."Lang Li sighed.
Song Hue followed, still smiling, Jan Win was the last one to leave.
"Can I at least watch?"She paused at the doorway.
"No."I said.
"Can I help?"She asked.
"No."I said.
"Can I taste it?"She asked hopefully.
"Absolutely not."I said.
"Understood."She laughed.
She finally stepped outside and I immediately marched over and shut the doors. I leaned against them.
"Finally."I slowly smiled.
"DAILY TASK REMINDER: 100 MOON COINS. BONUS: 25 MOON COINS IF EVERY ROYAL GUEST APPROVES."The system appeared again.
"They’re not getting in."I pointed at it.
"SYSTEM: Noted."A system said.
"Now..."I turned back toward my ingredients. I grabbed three eggs, fresh vegetables, herbs and flour. "Let’s make breakfast."
Outside the kitchen, I could hear voices.
"Do you think he will let us back in?" Jan Win asked.
"No." Song Hue replied cheerfully.
Lang Li was silent for several seconds.
"I am the Emperor."He reminded others.
"Apparently that means nothing in his kitchen."Song Hue laughed.
"Exactly."I smiled to myself.
"HIDDEN BONUS CONDITION DETECTED. THE DISH MUST ALSO BE APPROVED BY THE PERSON WHO KNOWS THE HOST’S CHILDHOOD SECRET."The system suddenly chimed.
My smile disappeared as I slowly lowered the eggs.
"What?"I asked.
The system went silent. For once, it did not explain.
"Who knows my childhood secret?"I stared at the glowing screen.
"HINT: THEY ARE ALREADY INSIDE THE PALACE."A system said.
"Oh, you’ve got to be kidding me."I froze.
"Already inside the palace?"I stared at the System.
"System."I said. "Who is it?"
"Classified."A system said.
"You’re unbelievably annoying."I sighed.
"Thank you."A system said.
"I wasn’t complimenting you."I sighed.
I shoved the thought aside, I had breakfast to make. Whatever mysterious person knew about original Wei’s childhood could wait.
I started chopping vegetables. Eggs went into a bowl, fresh herbs followed. I added a little salt, pepper, and some of the fragrant Moonleaf I had kept for cooking. Moonleaf, that reminded me of Jan Win.
"Good."I opened the oven, and as I returned to the counter, I heard a knock on a door.
"Who is it?"I asked.
"Me." Lang Li voice was behind the door.
"No."I closed my eyes.
"Wei."He tried again.
"No."I said.
"I only came to-"He tried again.
"No."I said more loudly.
"I haven’t said what I came for."He began.
"You were going to say something ridiculous like ’I came to help.’"I frowned.
"I came to help."He repeated.
From somewhere behind him, Song Hue laughed.
"Emperor, I told you he wouldn’t let you in."He said.
Lang Li sighed as I heard footsteps retreat. I continued cooking and the breakfast came together beautifully. Crispy herb potatoes, soft scrambled eggs, fresh vegetable pancakes and warm bread. I plated everything carefully. The smell alone made my stomach growl.
"Perfect."I smiled.
"DAILY TASK: COMPLETE. BASE REWARD: +100 MOON COINS. BONUS CONDITION: PENDING."A system said.
"That’s what I am talking about."I smiled.
Then the kitchen doors opened as I spun around.
"What did I just say?!" Jan Win stood there.
Behind her were Lang Li and Song Hue.
"I kicked you three out!"I pointed toward the hallway.
"We didn’t come inside."Jan Win raised both hands.
"Then how-"I blinked.
"I brought them."A quiet voice came from behind them.
My smile vanished as an elderly woman stepped into view. She wore an elegant dark red dress embroidered with golden flowers. I had never seen her before. Who is she?
