Chapter 109: Chapter 109 — The Next Level

Chapter 109 — The Next Level

A few minutes later, Victor and Lyra stood in the middle of the chamber, both breathing heavily.

Victor was completely exhausted.

His chest rose and fell rapidly as he tried to catch his breath. He looked down at himself.

Cyclops Spider blood and chunks of chitin covered his clothes.

Victor stared at his shirt for a moment.

Yeah. I’m burning this.

He grabbed the bottom of his shirt and pulled it over his head.

Lyra glanced toward him.

"What are you doing?"

Victor looked at her.

A small smile appeared on his face.

He said nothing.

For once, he decided to give her a taste of her own medicine.

Victor tossed the ruined shirt onto the floor.

Thankfully, he still had a thin undershirt beneath it, so he wasn’t completely exposed.

Lyra stared at him for another second before looking away.

Victor turned his attention to the chamber.

The aftermath of the battle was everywhere.

Dozens upon dozens of Cyclops Spider corpses covered the metallic floor.

Some had been crushed by his Monkey Fist.

Others had been sliced apart by Lyra’s blades.

Others had been torn apart by her Shadow Sphere.

Victor looked at the corpses.

Then his eyes lit up.

He immediately went to work.

He found the first corpse.

Then he pulled out the core.

The moment the core entered his hand, it disappeared into his Library storage.

Next.

Another core.

Gone.

Victor continued moving from corpse to corpse.

His exhaustion seemed to disappear whenever he found another core.

Lyra watched him.

There was something strange about his expression.

Victor looked happier with every core he collected.

Lyra narrowed her eyes.

What is wrong with this human?

Victor, meanwhile, was thoroughly enjoying himself.

Ever since the first monster he had killed inside the Alchemy Tower, there had been something strangely satisfying about removing a beast’s core.

Each one was valuable.

He would never admit it, but he had become somewhat addicted to collecting them.

Finally, Victor stood.

The last core disappeared into his storage.

He dusted his hands together.

"Much better."

Lyra stared at him.

Victor looked back.

Neither said anything.

After a moment, they turned their attention toward the rest of the chamber.

Victor’s gaze slowly moved across the hundreds of coffins.

Something about them bothered him.

He approached the nearest one cautiously.

He moved slowly.

Very slowly.

The last thing he wanted was for another Cyclops Spider to suddenly crawl out and bite his face off.

Victor reached the coffin.

He leaned over and looked inside.

Empty.

Victor’s expression slowly changed.

He checked several more.

Every single one was empty.

The only things remaining were weapons, pieces of armor, and other objects that had survived the passage of time.

Victor stepped back.

"Where did they all go?"

Then the answer became obvious.

His eyes moved toward the remains of the Cyclops Spiders scattered across the chamber.

The creatures must have been feeding on the bodies inside these coffins for an extremely long time.

That explained why there were so many of them.

But another question immediately appeared.

How had they gotten inside?

Victor looked toward the entrance.

The first burial hall had been completely sealed.

The door had been closed.

The Cyclops Spiders couldn’t have entered through there.

His gaze slowly moved across the room.

There had to be another way.

A second door stood at the far end of the chamber.

Victor approached.

At first, it appeared to be completely sealed.

Then he noticed a small, irregular hole burned directly through the metal.

Victor crouched beside it.

The edges were warped and discolored.

It almost looked as though something had burned through the door with acid.

Victor stared at it.

I really hope I never find out what did that.

Whatever had created the hole had been powerful enough to damage the strange metal that had survived thousands of years.

Victor stepped closer to the sealed door.

There wasn’t a handle.

No visible mechanism of any kind.

He ran his hand across the metal, searching for anything that might give.

Nothing.

Victor frowned.

There’s always a way to open a door.

He took a step back and examined the wall around it.

Then something caught his eye.

Carved into the stone beside the door was a familiar image.

A man.

A flame burning in his hand.

And beneath it, a small circular opening.

Victor’s eyes widened.

Then the Black Flame appeared in his hand.

A smile slowly spread across his face.

Victor raised his hand and brought the Black Flame toward the opening.

The moment the flame touched it, a faint glow spread beneath the metal.

Thin lines of light began tracing across the door, connecting ancient symbols that had been invisible moments before.

One after another, they came alive.

A deep rumble echoed through the chamber.

The massive door slowly began to open.

Victor stepped backward as the enormous metal structure shifted.

When it finally opened completely, light spilled from the other side.

Ancient formations flickered to life throughout the chamber, illuminating the walls and ceiling one section at a time.

Victor stared.

"Wow."

Lyra walked beside him.

A plaque beside the entrance caught Victor’s attention.

He brushed away the dust.

LEVEL THREE

Victor looked into the enormous chamber.

There were far fewer coffins here.

Roughly two dozen.

But these were unlike anything they had seen before.

Each coffin appeared to be made from a material that looked almost like diamond.

Victor approached one carefully.

The surface was translucent and brilliantly clear.

He had no idea whether actual diamonds existed in this world, but whatever this material was, it was the closest thing he had ever seen to one.

And unlike the coffins in the previous chamber, these were completely sealed.

Not a single one was open.

Victor looked around.

Then he noticed something else.

Half of the chamber was covered in a strange substance.

Purple and green residue coated the walls, floor, and ceiling.

It stretched across the chamber in thick layers.

In some places, it hung like enormous webs.

Sticky strands connected sections of the walls together, forming a massive web-like mass that covered nearly half the room.

Victor frowned.

They stepped farther inside.

Victor wasn’t planning to relax.

After fighting dozens of Cyclops Spiders, he wasn’t about to assume the room was empty.

Then Victor heard something.

A low sound.

"Grrrrrrr..."

He stopped.

Lyra stopped beside him.

Another sound followed.

A wet, gurgling roar.

Something moved inside the purple-and-green substance.

Victor’s grip tightened around his dagger.

Shapes began emerging from the strange web-like mass.

Victor’s eyes widened.

They looked like the older brothers of the Cyclops Spiders.

Except these things were enormous.

Nearly seven feet tall.

They had the same basic insectoid structure.

Four powerful spider-like legs.

A narrow body covered in chitin.

One enormous eye.

Two antennae.

But these creatures were far more developed.

Their bodies were coated in the same purple-and-green sticky substance covering the chamber.

And extending from the front of their bodies were two enormous blades.

They looked almost like the limbs of praying mantises.

Except these were massive, razor-sharp weapons.

Victor stared at them.

He had seen some strange creatures since arriving in this world.

But these guys were definitely the ugliest.

Victor slowly looked at Lyra.

"You don’t think they’re upset, do you?"

Lyra didn’t respond.

Victor continued staring.

"We did just kill their baby brothers and sisters."

Lyra completely ignored him.

She lowered her stance.

Her twin blades appeared in her hands.

Victor sighed.

"Right."

He tightened his grip on his dagger.

The creatures crawled farther out of the sticky mass.

Their single eyes locked onto the two humans standing before them.

The chamber filled with wet, guttural growls.

Victor’s expression became serious.

It was clear they weren’t going to let Victor and Lyra pass peacefully.
