Chapter 110 — A Deadly Evolution

Victor and Lyra prepared themselves.

The creatures continued crawling out from the strange purple-and-green mass covering the far side of the chamber.

The one at the front suddenly stopped.

Its single eye focused on Victor.

Then its mouth opened.

Two large pincers emerged from inside, unfolding outward with a sickening motion.

Victor’s expression changed.

Something began forming between the pincers.

A purple-and-green mass of liquid energy condensed into a small blob.

Victor barely had time to react.

The creature fired.

The projectile shot across the room at an incomprehensible speed.

Victor’s body moved on instinct.

He twisted to the side.

There wasn’t enough time to activate Flash Step.

The projectile grazed his shoulder.

Pain exploded through his body.

Victor crashed onto his knees, clutching his shoulder.

The area touched by the substance was already burning.

It wasn’t spreading, but the damage was horrifying.

The substance had eaten through his skin and flesh almost instantly, exposing the bone beneath.

Victor clenched his teeth.

His entire body trembled from the pain.

Lyra’s eyes widened.

She looked at Victor.

Something inside Victor snapped.

He slowly pushed himself back onto his feet.

His expression had completely changed.

Victor had never looked this angry before.

The creature opened its mouth again.

Victor disappeared.

Flash Step.

He reappeared behind it.

His Monkey Fist was already charged.

Victor drove his fist into the back of its head.

BOOM!

The creature was launched across the chamber.

Its body smashed into the metal wall with tremendous force.

Its neck bent unnaturally from the impact, splitting open without completely separating from the head.

Bluish-green blood poured from the wound.

The creature collapsed.

Victor didn’t even watch it fall.

He was already moving.

Another beast lunged toward him.

Victor Flash Stepped behind it.

Before he could strike, the creature’s scythe-like arms came whipping around.

The blades moved with frightening speed.

Victor’s eyes widened.

He jumped.

His body twisted backward in midair, narrowly slipping between the two enormous blades.

The scythes passed on either side of him.

Lyra suddenly appeared beside him.

Shadow energy erupted around her.

The familiar spherical vortex formed.

"Shadow Sphere."

The darkness exploded outward.

The creature’s body began tearing apart beneath the swirling shadow energy.

But it wasn’t enough.

The beast remained alive.

Its mouth opened.

The pincers emerged again.

Purple-and-green energy began gathering between them.

Victor saw what was happening.

Victor moved instantly.

He grabbed the back of its head and forced it upward.

The projectile shot harmlessly toward the ceiling.

Victor released the creature’s head, drew his dagger, and drove the blade into the side of its skull.

The creature collapsed.

Two dead.

Five remained.

Victor breathed heavily.

His shoulder was still burning.

His body was already exhausted.

And the fight had barely begun.

He couldn’t slow down.

Victor activated Flash Step.

At almost the exact same moment, Lyra moved in the opposite direction.

They split apart.

Victor went after three of the creatures.

Lyra targeted another.

She appeared in front of her opponent.

Her twin blades flashed.

Both scythe-like arms fell to the floor.

The creature opened its mouth.

The pincers emerged.

Energy began forming.

Lyra disappeared.

Shadow Step.

She reappeared behind it and drove both blades through the center of its chest.

The creature staggered.

It didn’t fall.

Lyra’s eyes narrowed.

Where the hell is its heart?

She pulled her blades free.

The creature turned toward her.

Lyra didn’t bother trying to find the answer.

Fine.

She stepped forward.

"I’ll just take the head."

Her blades crossed.

Then she spun.

Both swords swept through the creature’s neck.

Its head fell.

Lyra immediately sensed movement behind her.

Two more were approaching.

She turned.

Meanwhile, Victor had his own problems.

Three of the creatures surrounded him.

They attacked simultaneously.

Victor moved.

He stepped between them.

The three beasts collided with one another.

Victor’s fist was already charged.

He drove it forward.

Monkey Fist.

His fist punched straight through the chest of one of the creatures.

The energy detonated inside its body.

BOOM!

The creature exploded from the inside out.

Pieces of chitin and flesh scattered across the chamber.

Victor stood there for half a second.

Then looked down at himself.

He was covered in it.

"Great."

Then paused.

At least their insides aren’t poisonous.

After what had happened to his shoulder, he didn’t want to discover another surprise.

The remaining two beasts attacked.

Their scythe-like arms swung toward him.

Victor raised his dagger.

Clang!

He blocked one blade.

The second came from the side.

Victor disappeared.

Flash Step.

The scythe missed him.

Instead, it plunged directly into the body of its companion.

The creature froze.

Victor reappeared beside it.

His dagger drove downward.

Straight into its head.

The beast collapsed.

Victor immediately turned toward the final creature.

It was already attacking.

Victor ducked beneath the scythe.

Then drove his dagger upward.

The blade pierced its skull.

The creature fell.

Victor stood still for a moment.

He breathed heavily.

Then looked toward Lyra.

He expected to see her struggling against the remaining two.

Instead...

Both were already dead.

Lyra stood several feet away, twin blades lowered at her sides.

She looked at Victor.

Her expression almost seemed to say:

What took you so long?

Victor stared at her.

He wiped some of the creature’s remains from his face.

Of course she finished first.

They both stood there for several seconds, catching their breath.

Victor’s chest rose and fell rapidly.

Lyra wasn’t doing much better.

The chamber had gone quiet.

For a moment.

Then—

ROOOOAR!

Victor’s head snapped toward the sound.

Lyra turned as well.

The purple-and-green mass covering the far side of the chamber began to move.

Victor’s eyes widened.

More of the creatures emerged from the strange webbing.

A whole new group.

Their scythe-like limbs scraped against the metal floor as they crawled forward.

Victor stared at them.

"You’ve got to be kidding me."

Lyra ignored him.

She lowered herself into a fighting stance.

Victor sighed.

Then tightened his grip around his dagger.

Apparently, they weren’t finished yet.
