Chapter 117 — The Spider Mother
Victor stared at the enormous man-eating spider standing before them.
Its massive body towered over them, four legs planted firmly against the stone floor while its enormous eye remained fixed on the two humans standing before it.
A normal strategy wasn’t going to work.
There was no point in simply rushing forward and trying to stab the creature repeatedly.
Victor thought for a moment.
The best option was to keep the Spider Mother occupied while Lyra attacked from behind.
It wasn’t going to be a quick fight.
They would have to slowly wear it down.
Victor glanced at Lyra.
"I’ll keep it busy. You try to get hits in where you can."
Before Lyra could respond, Victor disappeared.
Lyra watched the spot where he had been standing for a moment.
She sighed quietly.
Victor reappeared directly in front of the Spider Mother.
He raised his dagger slightly.
"Hey, ugly! Over here!"
The Spider Mother’s enormous eye immediately shifted toward him.
A guttural scream erupted from its mouth.

Two of its massive mantis-like arms suddenly came crashing down.
Victor’s eyes widened.
What the hell?!
He hadn’t expected something that large to move so quickly.
The two blades came down almost simultaneously.
Victor immediately jumped.
His body twisted in midair, slipping through the narrow space between the two enormous blades.
They passed on either side of him.
BOOM!
The blades struck the stone floor, sending fragments of rock flying.
One piece slammed into Victor’s cheek.
He landed several feet away and Flash Stepped again as another blade swept toward him.
The attack missed him by inches.
Victor felt the wind of it pass across his face.
He couldn’t afford to get hit even once.
At nearly the same moment, Lyra appeared behind the Spider Mother.
Her twin blades flashed.
Slash!
Slash!
She struck one of its legs twice.
The blades dug into the thick chitin.
But only a few inches.
Lyra’s eyes narrowed.
The Spider Mother immediately noticed her.
Its enormous body began to turn.
One of its mantis arms swung toward Lyra.
She disappeared.
The blade tore through the space where she had been standing.
Lyra reappeared beside Victor.
"A normal attack isn’t going to take this thing down."
She glanced at her blades.
"My attacks only went about three inches into its leg."
Victor nodded.
His gaze shifted toward the sword hanging at his waist.
Liam’s sword.
Victor looked at Lyra.
"Let’s switch roles."
He continued.
"You distract it. I’ll see if this thing can do any damage."
Lyra didn’t answer.
She immediately Shadow Stepped behind the Spider Mother.
Her blades struck another leg.
The Spider Mother spun around.
Its enormous eye searched for her.
One of its mantis arms swept through the space where she had been standing.
Lyra vanished.
She appeared behind another leg.
Slash!
The Spider Mother turned again.
Lyra continued moving around the creature, striking from different angles before disappearing into the shadows.
But the Spider Mother was learning.
The first few attacks had caught it off guard.
Now it began reacting before Lyra could fully commit.
Lyra appeared behind its left leg.
The creature’s body shifted.
A blade came down.
Lyra’s eyes widened.
She Shadow Stepped away just before the mantis arm crashed into the ground.
BOOM!
The stone beneath her previous position cracked.
Lyra reappeared several feet away.
She immediately launched herself back in.
Slash!
Her blade cut across the creature’s side.
A shallow wound opened.
The Spider Mother shrieked and swung both arms toward her.
Lyra disappeared again.
Victor watched carefully.
It was faster than it looked.
Much faster.
And every attack was meant to kill.
Victor waited.
Then he moved.
Flash Step.
His body appeared on top of the Spider Mother’s back.
Victor drew his sword.
He gathered as much Spiritual Energy as he could into his body and pushed it into his arms.
Then he drove the sword downward.
THUNK!
The blade pierced through the creature’s thick exterior.
Victor gritted his teeth and pushed harder.
The sword sank deeper.
Roughly a foot and a half.
The Spider Mother suddenly released a shriek of pain.
Its enormous body jerked violently.
Victor’s eyes widened.
It worked!
The creature immediately twisted one of its mantis arms backward.
The massive blade came toward him.
Victor pulled the sword and Flash Stepped away just as the attack tore through the space where he had been.
He landed hard beside Lyra.
A sharp pain ran through his shoulder.
He looked down.
The tip of the blade had grazed him.
A thin line of blood ran across his robe.
They both looked at the wound.
Blood was pouring from the Spider Mother’s back.
Victor’s expression tightened.
They had found a way to hurt it.
But it wasn’t enough.
The Spider Mother was still standing.
Lyra disappeared again.
She Shadow Stepped between its legs and struck the same damaged section of its leg.
Each slash landed in nearly the same location.
Blood began running down the creature’s leg.
Finally, the leg began to sag.
Lyra’s eyes sharpened.
Almost.
She prepared to attack the same spot again.
But the Spider Mother noticed.
Its enormous eye immediately focused on her.
The creature shifted its body, protecting the damaged leg.
Lyra disappeared.
She reappeared beside the same leg.
A mantis blade was already waiting for her.
Her eyes widened.
She twisted away.
The blade still caught her side.
A shallow cut opened across her clothing.
Lyra landed several feet away and pressed one hand against her side.
Blood slowly seeped through her fingers.
Lyra reappeared beside Victor.
She was breathing slightly harder now.
Then she disappeared again.
He turned toward the Spider Mother.
It was already coming for him.
He couldn’t let the creature control the distance.
Victor could feel his Spiritual Energy beginning to drain.
His breathing became heavier.
Every Flash Step demanded more from him.
Lyra was also moving slightly slower than before.
The fight was becoming a battle of patience.
One mistake could end everything.
Victor watched the Spider Mother carefully.
Its attention was almost completely focused on Lyra.
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
It had completely stopped watching him.
There.
Victor vanished.
Flash Step.
He appeared directly in front of the Spider Mother’s enormous face.
The creature’s eye widened.
For the first time, it looked surprised.
It didn’t have time to react.
Victor’s fist was already charged.
"Monkey Fist!"
BOOM!
His fist slammed directly into the Spider Mother’s eye.
The enormous eye crumpled inward.
For a brief moment, everything went silent.
Then the Spider Mother screamed.
A horrifying, ear-piercing shriek erupted from its mouth.
"ROOOOOOOOOOOAR!"
The sound shook the cavern.
Victor’s expression changed.
An enormous amount of Spiritual Energy suddenly erupted from the Spider Mother’s body.
The force struck him head-on.
Victor was thrown backward.
He barely managed to protect his head before his body slammed into the stone floor.
Pain shot through his back.
He rolled several times before finally stopping.
Across the cavern, Lyra had also been thrown through the air.
She twisted in midair and landed on one knee.
She gritted her teeth and forced herself back up.
Victor pushed himself up.
His vision blurred for a moment.
He blinked and looked toward the Spider Mother.
Then he froze.
Something was happening.
The Spider Mother’s body was changing.
Its enormous limbs began twisting.
Its thick chitinous body shifted and cracked.
Purple and green Spiritual Energy erupted around it, covering its entire body.
Victor stared.
"What..."
Lyra slowly stood beside him.
She looked just as confused.
The creature continued changing.
Its body distorted at an incredible speed.
The shape of its limbs began changing.
Its massive body compressed and expanded as the Spiritual Energy surrounding it grew stronger.
Cracks spread across its chitin.
Pieces of its outer shell began falling to the ground.
The pressure filling the cavern increased.
Victor tightened his grip around Liam’s sword.
The creature standing before them was no longer going to remain the same.
The Spider Mother was transforming.
And whatever emerged from that transformation wasn’t going to be pretty.
