Chapter 118 — The Final Stand

Victor and Lyra watched as the Spider Mother’s transformation finished.

It had happened in a matter of seconds.

The enormous creature had nearly doubled in size.

Its four legs had become thicker and more powerful, the muscles beneath its armor bulging as its body expanded. Its mantis-like arms had grown longer, their blades stretching even farther from its body.

But the most noticeable change was its armor.

The dark purple and sickly green chitin that had covered its body was gone.

In its place was a metallic silver shell.

It reflected the faint light of the cavern’s formations, giving the creature an almost unnatural appearance.

Even its enormous eye had changed.

Strange markings had appeared across its surface, twisting around the eye in intricate patterns Victor couldn’t understand.

The pressure radiating from the Spider Mother had increased tremendously.

Victor’s expression became serious.

For a moment, he wondered if he had misjudged its cultivation.

It’s not a Beast Soldier...

But it’s almost there.

Victor and Lyra exchanged a glance.

They didn’t have time to think about it.

They had to continue.

Lyra immediately Shadow Stepped forward.

The moment she appeared—

BOOM!

One of the Spider Mother’s legs struck her.

Lyra was sent flying backward.

Victor’s eyes widened.

He immediately Flash Stepped behind her and caught her before she slammed into the wall.

Lyra pushed herself away from him as soon as she regained her balance.

Victor’s eyes were already back on the Spider Mother.

He Flash Stepped upward.

His body appeared on top of the creature.

Victor raised Liam’s sword and drove it toward the Spider Mother’s back.

CLANG!

The blade struck.

But it didn’t penetrate.

Victor’s eyes widened.

The sword hadn’t even cracked the surface.

What?

Before he could react, one of the Spider Mother’s massive mantis arms swung toward him.

Victor raised the sword.

BOOM!

The blade blocked the attack.

But the force behind it was monstrous.

Energy still passed through the weapon.

A long gash appeared across Victor’s chest.

The only section left untouched was the small area directly behind his sword.

Blood immediately began flowing down his torso.

Victor coughed.

A mouthful of blood escaped his lips.

He barely managed to Flash Step away before the second mantis arm tore through the space where he had been.

Victor landed several feet away.

His breathing was heavy.

He pressed a hand against his chest.

This isn’t the same beast anymore.

Its strength had nearly doubled.

Victor looked toward Lyra.

She was breathing heavily, her movements noticeably slower.

Victor wasn’t doing much better.

Blood continued flowing from the wound across his chest.

We need to finish this.

Quickly.

Otherwise, neither of them was leaving this cavern alive.

Victor had barely finished thinking when Lyra Shadow Stepped forward again.

The Spider Mother was waiting.

Its leg swung out.

BOOM!

Lyra was slammed into the ground.

She landed face down.

For half a second, she couldn’t move.

The Spider Mother raised two of its mantis arms.

Lyra looked up.

She knew.

She wasn’t going to escape.

Her mind flashed through everything she had wanted.

Breaking past her cultivation ceiling.

Becoming stronger.

Finding her parents.

Finding the humans who had taken them.

Making those humans pay.

She couldn’t die here.

Not yet.

The blades descended.

Lyra’s eyes widened.

Then—

Victor appeared in front of her.

He raised Liam’s sword.

CLANG!

Both blades struck the sword.

The force pushed Victor down onto one knee.

But he held.

The two attacks left massive gashes across his chest.

A bloody X formed across his torso.

The only part left untouched was the area directly behind the sword.

Victor coughed violently.

Blood spilled from his mouth.

His vision blurred.

His body trembled.

He could barely think.

Lyra stared at him.

She couldn’t understand what she was seeing.

A human.

The same species she had spent her entire life learning to hate.

The same species she had believed was responsible for taking her parents.

And this same human had just thrown himself in front of a blade for her.

"Victor..."

Her voice was quiet.

"Are you okay?"

Victor looked toward her.

For a moment, he couldn’t even process the question.

Then he smiled.

It was a weak smile.

Victor slowly pushed himself up.

His legs trembled.

He tried to move.

He couldn’t Flash Step.

His Spiritual Energy was too disrupted by the damage.

His mind couldn’t focus enough to properly circulate it.

He took another step.

His body nearly collapsed.

Lyra watched him.

She understood.

There was only one thing she could do.

She disappeared.

Shadow Step.

Lyra appeared directly on top of the Spider Mother.

She raised both hands.

"Shadow Sphere."

Dark energy erupted.

A massive sphere of shadow appeared above the creature.

But this time, it was different.

Far larger than before.

Nearly twice the size of the Shadow Sphere she had used previously.

The sphere began violently vibrating.

Chaotic shadow energy poured from it.

Then it slammed down.

BOOM!

The Spider Mother’s metallic armor began to cave inward.

The creature screamed.

Lyra continued pouring energy into the attack.

The Shadow Sphere slowly burrowed deeper.

The Spider Mother thrashed violently.

It wanted Lyra off its back.

But the damage was far greater than it had expected.

Victor looked up.

His eyes widened.

She’s actually doing it.

But he could tell there was a cost.

Lyra couldn’t maintain the attack forever.

Victor needed to help.

He tried to gather his Spiritual Energy.

His body screamed in pain.

He forced himself to focus.

He activated his bloodline to accelerate his healing.

The moment his bloodline energy appeared, Liam’s sword reacted.

Victor froze.

The weapon suddenly began vibrating.

"What?"

The sword was responding to his bloodline.

Black Phoenix Flames instantly wrapped around the blade.

The sword began changing.

The ordinary-looking blade turned completely black.

The hilt became white.

Black Phoenix Flames swirled around the entire weapon, purple flickering within them.

Victor gripped the sword.

Something changed inside him.

It felt as though he had been given an additional breath.

His body began recovering slightly faster.

Not enough to visibly heal the wounds.

Just enough.

Enough for him to stand.

Victor looked up.

His eyes hardened.

I can still fight.

Lyra was still attacking the Spider Mother.

Victor Flash Stepped.

He appeared underneath the enormous creature.

Victor swung.

SLASH!

The black blade cut cleanly through one of the Spider Mother’s legs.

The enormous limb fell to the ground.

The Spider Mother screamed.

Its body suddenly lost balance.

The creature toppled sideways.

Lyra continued driving the Shadow Sphere deeper into its back.

The Spider Mother convulsed violently.

Victor didn’t waste the opening.

He jumped.

His black sword flashed upward.

SLASH!

The blade tore across the Spider Mother’s underbelly.

The abdomen split open halfway across its enormous body.

Blood and viscera spilled onto the cavern floor.

The Spider Mother collapsed.

Victor landed.

He immediately Flash Stepped toward its head.

Lyra was still buried deep within its body with the Shadow Sphere.

The Spider Mother continued convulsing.

Victor raised his sword.

One final slash.

SLASH!

The black blade cut through its neck.

The enormous head separated from its body.

The Spider Mother finally stopped moving.

Silence followed.

Victor stood there for half a second.

Then his strength disappeared.

His sword slipped from his hand.

He collapsed face-first onto the cavern floor.

Lyra saw him fall.

She looked toward the dead Spider Mother.

Then back at Victor.

She immediately Shadow Stepped toward him.

She knelt beside his body and checked his pulse.

It was there.

Weak.

But steady.

A faint look of relief crossed Lyra’s face.

Then she grabbed Victor and dragged him toward the side of the cavern.

She barely managed to move him before her body finally gave out.

Lyra collapsed beside him.

Her head landed against his chest.

The enormous cavern that had moments ago been filled with screaming, explosions, and the clash of battle became completely silent.

Victor and Lyra lay motionless beside the corpse of the Spider Mother.

Neither knew what would happen next.
