Chapter 119 — Goodbye Crypt

Lyra woke roughly a day and a half later.

Her body felt weak.

She slowly opened her eyes, still disoriented from everything that had happened. The battle with the Spider Mother came rushing back to her, along with the amount of energy she had poured into her Shadow Sphere.

She had pushed herself far beyond her normal limits.

The technique had consumed nearly all the energy within her Core.

Lyra was still Rank 10, but she was no longer at the peak of Body Tempering. She would have to replenish the energy she had lost before returning to her previous state.

It was an old secret technique of the Shadow Fox Clan.

For thousands of years, her clan had struggled to break through the barrier between peak Body Tempering and Beast Soldier. Since they couldn’t advance through cultivation, they had developed techniques that allowed them to temporarily draw upon enormous amounts of power.

But there was always a price.

Lyra slowly pushed herself up.

Then she froze.

She looked down.

Her head was resting on Victor’s chest.

Again.

For several seconds, she simply stared.

Seriously?

Somehow, every time she lost consciousness around this human, she ended up waking up on his chest.

Lyra immediately pushed herself away and sat upright.

I really need to stop doing that.

She looked down at Victor.

Three deep wounds crossed his chest. Two formed a massive X, while another long gash ran across the upper portion of his chest.

The wounds had already closed.

And there was no longer any bleeding.

Lyra narrowed her eyes slightly and reached down to check his pulse.

Steady.

Much stronger than before.

She released a quiet breath.

At least he wasn’t dying.

Lyra stood.

Her body still felt weak, but she could move.

She looked around the cavern.

The Spider Mother’s enormous corpse still lay roughly ten feet away.

Lyra stared at it for a moment.

That had been one of the hardest battles she had ever experienced.

She looked toward Victor, then back at the corpse.

She knew Victor would want the core.

Lyra walked over to the Spider Mother and began searching.

She spent nearly ten minutes digging through its body before finally finding it.

Lyra pulled it free, cleaned some of the blood from it, and placed it inside her bag.

She then looked toward the other passage.

Curiosity got the better of her.

Lyra walked toward the opening and slowly entered.

The passage was dark.

She continued forward for roughly fifteen minutes before noticing the ground beginning to rise.

The passage continued upward at a fairly steep angle.

Lyra stared into the darkness above.

She could probably continue.

But she didn’t want to go too far.

Victor was still unconscious.

She didn’t want to leave him alone for long.

Lyra turned around and walked back through the passage.

When she returned, Victor was exactly where she had left him.

Lyra looked at him for a moment.

Then she sat down.

There wasn’t much else she could do.

So she cultivated.

Time passed quietly.

Three and a half more days went by.

Nearly five days had passed since Victor had lost consciousness.

Then—

Victor moved.

Lyra’s eyes opened immediately.

She looked toward him.

Victor’s fingers twitched.

His body shifted slightly.

But she quickly closed her eyes again.

She didn’t want him to know she had been watching.

Victor slowly opened his eyes.

He stared at the ceiling for several seconds.

Then he looked around.

The cavern.

The Spider Mother’s corpse.

Lyra.

His memories returned.

Victor slowly pushed himself upright.

Pain immediately shot through his body.

He winced.

His wounds had closed completely, but the internal damage was still there.

Every movement sent pain through his body.

Victor tried to stand.

His legs trembled.

He stumbled slightly before catching himself.

Yeah.

I’m definitely not ready to move yet.

Victor sat back down and crossed his legs.

He immediately began cultivating.

Lyra continued cultivating as well.

For the next eight or nine hours, neither of them spoke.

The only sound in the cavern was the faint circulation of Spiritual Energy.

Eventually, Victor opened his eyes.

He looked toward Lyra.

His stomach suddenly growled.

Grrrrr.

Victor stared forward for a moment.

Then he laughed quietly.

Lyra opened her eyes and looked at him.

Victor smiled.

"I think it’s time we get out of here."

Lyra nodded.

They both stood.

Victor slowly began walking.

He wasn’t stumbling anymore, but every step still had a slight crookedness to it.

His body hurt.

But he could at least walk.

The two made their way through the cavern and eventually reached the slope Lyra had discovered earlier.

Victor looked upward.

The slope was steep.

He grabbed the stone wall and slowly climbed.

Every step sent pain through his body.

But eventually, they reached the top.

Victor pushed through the thick brush.

Vines wrapped around the surrounding trees, and patches of greenery had grown across the opening.

Then Victor stepped through.

He stopped.

Trees.

A forest.

The enormous cavern they had left days ago stretched before them once again.

Victor breathed in deeply.

"Finally."

He couldn’t have been happier to see trees.

After spending so long inside that dark, damp crypt, he never wanted to see another one again.

If someone approached him in the future and said there was an ancient crypt filled with treasure and mysteries that they wanted to explore, Victor would probably laugh in their face and walk away.

Nope.

Absolutely not.

I’ve had enough crypts for one lifetime.

Victor and Lyra slowly began making their way back toward the area they had come from.

They hadn’t gone very far when several weak Spiritual Beasts appeared.

Victor’s expression remained calm.

Before he could even think about fighting them, Lyra disappeared.

Shadow Step.

She appeared behind the beasts.

Her blades flashed.

The beasts fell almost instantly.

Victor knew fighting those beasts in his current condition would have been considerably more difficult.

He immediately got to work.

He gathered some wood and built a fire.

Then he began preparing the meat.

It was the same process he had gone through countless times.

Lyra sat nearby.

She watched silently.

But deep down, she was looking forward to one thing.

She had already tasted Victor’s cooking once.

And it had been surprisingly good.

She would never admit that to him though.

The smell of roasted meat slowly began filling the forest.

For now, neither of them felt the need to speak.

They simply sat beside the fire and waited for the food to finish.
