Chapter 433: Sedated Links
He let his eyelids flutter shut, sinking perfectly into the ultrasonic hum of the espresso linen, entirely content to float above the burning wreckage of the entertainment ecosystem, completely and flawlessly untouched.
For a time that could only be measured by the slow, hypnotic circulation of the ’Continuous Puppy Conveyor’ gliding silently past the edge of the hovering megalith, the living room existed in a state of immaculate, chemically pure bliss. The soft, rhythmic breathing of the world’s most famous women synchronized perfectly with the low-frequency acoustic vibrations holding the massive sofa three feet in the air.
Angelina Jolie, still swathed in her heated cashmere cocoon, lazily extended a single, manicured finger over the edge of the floating pit. A heavily sedated, impossibly fluffy Golden Retriever puppy drifted past on the upholstered conveyor belt, letting out a tiny, contented snore as Angelina’s fingertip grazed its ear.
"I never want to leave this room," Angelina whispered, her dark eyes half-closed. "If the outside world requires my presence, tell them I have legally assimilated into the furniture."
"The outside world is currently paying us hundreds of millions of dollars to ensure you never have to leave, Angie," Alex drawled smoothly, his deep baritone vibrating through the acoustic dampeners. His hands remained comfortably laced over his stomach. "Your existence as an immovable object is now the primary anchor of the global economy."
Gillian Anderson shifted against his left shoulder, letting out a husky, deeply cynical laugh. "Which brings us to the next victim of your algorithmic extortion. Jen, what time is it?"
Jennifer Aniston, curled up in the western quadrant of the floating pit, didn’t bother checking a watch—a practice that was now strictly embargoed within the Sanctuary. Instead, she lazily tapped the Vanguard tactical tablet resting on her stomach.
"It is exactly time for the prime-time premiere of Sanctuary Chef: The Ultimate Challenge," Jennifer grinned, her bright blue eyes dancing with shameless mischief. "I checked the scheduling matrix. The Food Network surrendered their entire eight-o’clock block to the ’Ghost Render’ AI after Gordon Ramsay retired to become a professional napper."
"Turn it on," Courteney Cox urged from the foot of the sofa, pulling a plush cashmere throw over her legs. "I need to see how the supercomputer handles a high-stakes cooking competition. The suspense of a soufflé collapsing is usually terrifying."
"Suspense is an endocrine tragedy, Court. The machine will not allow it," Alex murmured, his eyes remaining peacefully shut. "Engage the broadcast."
Jennifer tapped the execution key. The massive, sixty-inch Pioneer rear-projection monitor at the edge of the patio flickered, fading from a soothing twilight gradient into a flawlessly rendered, hyper-realistic television studio kitchen.
However, there were no blazing stovetops. There were no ticking countdown clocks. The studio was illuminated by soft, ambient candlelight.
Standing behind two separate stainless-steel prep stations were the digital, photorealistic avatars of the 1990s’ most notoriously intense celebrity chefs: Bobby Flay and Emeril Lagasse. In a traditional broadcast, this would be the moment the host shouted a secret ingredient, prompting the chefs to sprint toward a pantry in a chaotic, sweat-drenched frenzy.
Instead, the camera panned to a digital, heavily sedated Chairman, who was currently lying on a velvet chaise lounge.
"Gentlemen," the digital Chairman whispered, his voice modulated into a deeply soothing, ASMR-level cadence. "Today’s secret ingredient is... a whole, raw butternut squash."
A single, unpeeled squash materialized on the counter in front of both chefs.
The digital avatar of Bobby Flay stared at the squash. He let out a long, heavy sigh of profound spiritual exhaustion.
"To prepare this squash," digital Bobby whispered to the camera, leaning heavily against his counter, "I would be required to wield a sharpened steel blade. Slicing through the dense, fibrous exterior of a winter gourd requires immense downward kinetic force and severe wrist torque. It is a localized ergonomic nightmare that puts the rotator cuff at unacceptable risk."
The camera slowly cut to the digital avatar of Emeril Lagasse. He did not yell his signature catchphrases. He simply picked up a plush, silk blanket and draped it gently over the raw squash.
"I refuse to inflict biological trauma upon myself for the sake of a side dish," digital Emeril murmured softly, pulling out a sleek, unbranded mobile device. "I am ordering a pre-emulsified, truffle-infused bisque from a high-end delivery service. The courier will place it directly into my pneumatic intake tube. BAM. Zero friction."
The digital judges, rendered as a panel of incredibly cozy, bathrobe-clad food critics, nodded in slow, synchronized reverence.
"Astonishing," a digital critic whispered, wiping away a single tear. "He completely bypassed the tragedy of manual labor. Ten out of ten for absolute, unyielding caloric efficiency."
The screen faded to a soft, tranquil black, accompanied by a single, mournful cello note. The entire episode had concluded in three minutes.
In the Trousdale living room, the Harem Council erupted into chaotic, breathless laughter. Mariah Carey buried her face in the espresso linen, her shoulders shaking uncontrollably.
"He put a blanket over the squash!" Mariah shrieked, wiping tears of amusement from her eyes. "Alex, you literally made a cooking show where the winner is the guy who orders takeout!"
"Mastication and meal preparation are archaic, working-class traps, Mary," Alex lectured seamlessly, a lazy smirk finally pulling at his lips. "By demonstrating that throwing money at a delivery service is vastly superior to chopping a vegetable, we are elevating the cultural consciousness. We are saving millions of housewives from the tyranny of the cutting board."
"It’s brilliant," Angelina giggled, pressing her lips against Alex’s jawline in a shameless display of affection. "You just bankrupted every knife manufacturer in America. No one is ever going to cook again."
"A silent kitchen is an efficient kitchen, Angie," Alex replied, his fingers lazily tracing the curve of her waist through the heated towel.
Before the Council could further dissect the absolute ideological collapse of the culinary arts, a soft, rhythmic whoosh echoed from the newly renovated East Wing corridor.
The heavy, soundproof double doors slid open.
Snoop Dogg and Keanu Reeves did not emerge in the pneumatic transit capsules, nor were they riding the magnetic hover-cushions. They were floating entirely unsupported, drifting into the living room via the acoustic levitation field, moving with the slow, majestic grace of astronauts on a spacewalk.
However, they were both wearing green, velvet golf visors and holding sleek, matte-black laser pointers.
"Nephew," Snoop drawled smoothly, a cloud of fragrant smoke drifting upward as he rotated lazily in mid-air, entirely horizontal. "The Vanguard boys just unlocked a new sector in the basement. They called it the ’Sedated Links’."
Keanu drifted in right behind him, floating upside down with his arms crossed over his chest, his dark hair defying gravity. He looked perfectly at peace with the universe.
"It’s a revolution in athletic leisure, Alex," Keanu murmured, his voice filled with philosophical awe. "Traditional golf requires walking eighteen holes under a blazing sun. It forces the human spine into a violent, twisting contortion just to strike a small urethane ball with a heavy titanium club. It is a cardiovascular and orthopedic tragedy."
"So how did Vanguard correct this tragedy?" Gillian asked, highly amused, watching the two Hollywood legends float above the zero-edge pool.
"They installed an acoustic putting green," Snoop grinned, pointing his laser pointer at the ceiling. "You don’t walk. You lie on a levitating golf cart bed. You don’t swing a club. You just point this laser at the hole. The room’s ultrasonic transducers instantly generate a localized sound wave that gently, perfectly pushes the ball directly into the pocket. Hole in one, every single time. No sweating. No bogeys. Just absolute, telekinetic dominance."
"The ball wants to be in the hole, Alex," Keanu added softly, closing his eyes. "Why force it with a metal club? We simply allowed the acoustic waves to guide it to its destiny. We played a full eighteen holes without ever elevating our heart rates above resting baseline."
Alex opened one obsidian eye, looking at the two floating men. "I assume the aesthetic of the putting green is devoid of actual grass? Organic matter attracts insects, and insects are an environmental nuisance."
"Memory-foam turf, King," Snoop confirmed reverently. "Green, unbranded cashmere. It’s like putting on a cloud."
"Excellent," Alex murmured, closing his eye again. "You have successfully gentrified the sport of kings. I expect the PGA Tour to file a formal complaint by the end of the week."
As if summoned by the sheer, terrifying accuracy of the Slacker King’s foresight, the heavy Motorola brick phone resting on the teakwood tray emitted its silent, red visual strobe alert.
Alex let out a low, resonant groan of profound spiritual suffering. "The external universe possesses a catastrophic lack of timing."
Jennifer, laughing helplessly at the sheer predictability of the corporate world, snatched the phone and pressed it to her ear. She listened for a fraction of a second, her jaw dropping slightly. She hit the speakerphone button and tossed the device onto the cushions.
"Make it quick, Richard," Alex commanded smoothly. "Snoop has just discovered laser-guided acoustic golf, and I do not wish to interrupt his spiritual awakening with administrative chatter."
"I sincerely apologize for violating the weekend blackout, Mr. Turner, but the punchline is simply too historic to withhold," Richard Vance Jr.’s voice crackled through the speaker, vibrating with dark, Ivy League ecstasy. "The Food Network just fired all of their executive chefs. They are currently rebranding as a high-end food delivery review channel. But that is not why I am calling."
"Did the golfing syndicates discover our basement?" Alex asked lazily.
"They did, sir," Richard laughed, the sound echoing through the quiet room. "The Professional Golfers’ Association just watched the telemetry data leak from the ’Sedated Links’. They realize that if the public discovers they can play a perfect round of golf from a bed using a laser pointer, the physical sport is mathematically dead. They are terrified of a mass exodus from their country clubs."
"What is their desperate counter-measure?" Monica purred, highly entertained.
"They have proactively surrendered, Ms. Bellucci," Richard reported proudly. "The PGA just offered Tyrant Group LLC fifty million dollars for the exclusive rights to our acoustic targeting software. Furthermore, they are offering to completely surrender the digital likeness of Tiger Woods. They want the ’Ghost Render’ AI to play the Masters tournament for him so he doesn’t have to walk the course."
The living room fell into a stunned, delighted silence before erupting into chaotic, unapologetic laughter.
"They want to buy a computer program to play golf for Tiger Woods so he can take a nap?" Angelina wheezed, burying her face into Alex’s neck.
"Athletic exertion is officially obsolete, Angie," Alex stated seamlessly. "Richard. Accept the fifty million dollars. We will lease them the algorithm. However, mandate that all physical golf carts on the PGA tour must be immediately retrofitted with Loro Piana memory-foam mattresses. If I am forced to watch a golfer on television, I demand that they be lying down."
"It is a masterpiece of exclusionary, high-friction extortion, sir," Richard laughed. "I will issue the architectural mandate immediately. The sport of golf will be entirely pacified. Unplugging my switchboard now."
The line clicked dead.
Jennifer tossed the phone away. The corporate world was actively cannibalizing its own athletic traditions, billion-dollar athletes were being outsourced to supercomputers, and the universe was bending completely to the gravity of the espresso linen pit.
Alex shifted his weight slightly on the floating megalith. Because the entire sofa was suspended on an acoustic levitation field, the movement required zero kinetic resistance. Angelina and Gillian slid effortlessly against his sides, their bodies warm and completely relaxed. The continuous puppy conveyor hummed softly in the background. The ambient white noise of the climate control washed over him. The perimeter was secure. The sporting world had been pacified.
He let his eyelids flutter shut, sinking perfectly into the ultrasonic hum of the cushions, entirely content to float above the burning wreckage of the entertainment ecosystem, completely and flawlessly untouched.
