Chapter 442: Pool-Cleaner Romance

"I think," Jennifer Aniston announced, completely missing her mouth with a tossed grape and letting it bounce harmlessly off her forehead, "the machine has finally snapped. We broke it. It has officially run out of things to render."

"It hasn’t snapped, Jen," Alex replied, his voice a low, steady rumble that barely disturbed the ambient quiet of the room. He was lying entirely flat on his back, his hands laced over his stomach, serving as a highly effective, human-sized pillow for Angelina Jolie. "The system simply achieved creative enlightenment. It realized that external drama is exhausting, so it turned its focus inward."

The massive screen hovering at the edge of the patio was not broadcasting a hijacked awards show, nor was it ruining a global sports franchise. For the past two hours, the ’Ghost Render’ artificial intelligence had been operating entirely on its own unprompted initiative. Having run out of global industries to pacify, the supercomputer had gotten incredibly bored.

It was currently broadcasting a hyper-dramatic, multi-camera soap opera titled The Perimeter.

The entire premise of the AI-generated show was a wildly exaggerated, highly stressful dramatization of the Vanguard Security team trying to guard a man who literally never went outside.

On the screen, a photorealistic, digital avatar of Commander Elias Thorne was aggressively pacing back and forth in a dimly lit security bunker. The algorithm had rendered him with massive bags under his eyes and a sheen of frantic, high-definition sweat.

"He’s been lying there for three consecutive days!" Digital Thorne screamed, grabbing a synthesized, terrified subordinate by the collar of his suit. "If a single gust of wind disturbs his bangs, we’re all getting fired! Do you understand me?! Secure the HVAC vents! Deploy the anti-dust lasers!"

Gillian Anderson let out a husky, breathless snort from the far end of the sofa, wiping a tear of amusement from her cheek. "Look at his digital blood pressure. The algorithm thinks your security guards are on the verge of a cardiac event just watching you nap. Alex, your supercomputer is actively bullying your staff."

"I didn’t prompt this narrative, Gillian," Alex reasoned lazily, not bothering to open his eyes. "The machine merely observed the absolute lack of external threats and calculated that the guards must be manufacturing internal panic to justify their paychecks. It is an incredibly accurate psychological assessment."

On the screen, the digital subordinate trembled. "But Commander! A leaf fell into the zero-edge pool! We couldn’t intercept it in time!"

Digital Thorne dropped to his knees, burying his face in his hands, staring up at the digital ceiling in raw, tear-drenched agony. "We failed him! The aesthetic is ruined! Burn the pool to the ground!"

Angelina buried her face in Alex’s ribs, her shoulders shaking with silent, uncontrollable laughter. "He ordered them to burn a pool of water. The AI thinks Elias is a complete psychopath."

"Elias is a professional," Monica Bellucci corrected smoothly, plucking the dropped grape from Jennifer’s forehead and eating it herself. "But the Italian soap opera elements are flawless. I fully expect the digital Commander to slap someone in the next scene."

The heavy, soundproof doors down the hallway slid open with a soft hiss. Snoop Dogg and Keanu Reeves strolled into the room, both balancing oversized bowls of heavily buttered popcorn.

"Nephew," Snoop laughed, pointing a buttery finger at the television screen as he sank into a nearby armchair. "Please tell me I am hallucinating. Is that the Commander crying over a piece of foliage?"

Keanu nodded solemnly, taking a slow bite of popcorn. "The emotional stakes are staggering, Alex. He is a warrior trapped in a prison of absolute peace, desperately searching for a war that will never come. The machine understands the existential dread of the unemployed bodyguard. It’s basically Shakespeare."

"It is a comedy of errors," Alex corrected seamlessly. "A true warrior understands that the greatest victory is a day where absolutely nothing happens. The digital Thorne lacks my philosophical baseline."

Before Snoop could offer a counter-argument regarding the psychological toll of boredom, the real Elias Thorne cleared his throat.

The sound came from the hallway entrance. Everyone turned their heads.

Thorne stood perfectly rigid in his tailored charcoal suit. His posture was immaculate, his hands clasped behind his back. However, there was a very distinct, very human twitch vibrating in his jawline as he stared at the television screen.

"Sir," Thorne said, his voice clipped and painfully professional.

"Yes, Commander?" Alex asked, finally cracking one eye open to look at the man.

"I can tolerate the algorithm documenting our patrol routes," Thorne stated, his eyes narrowing at his weeping digital counterpart. "I can tolerate the exaggerated pacing. I can even tolerate the implication that I would order my men to set a body of water on fire."

"A highly illogical command, admittedly," Alex nodded. "Water is notoriously difficult to ignite."

"However, sir," Thorne continued, his voice dropping an octave, "the AI has just automatically generated a promotional trailer for Season Two of this broadcast. And it has assigned my digital avatar a romantic subplot."

Jennifer sat up entirely, her eyes sparkling with malicious joy. "A romance? Elias, who is the lucky digital lady?"

Thorne closed his eyes for a brief, agonizing second. "It is not a lady, Ms. Aniston. The algorithm calculated that because I spend eighty percent of my shift monitoring the courtyard, my avatar must be developing a passionate, forbidden romance with the automated pool-cleaning robot."

The living room fell into a stunned, absolute silence.

Then, Mariah Carey completely lost her mind. She shrieked, collapsing backward into the pillows, kicking her feet in the air. Snoop Dogg nearly choked on his popcorn, bending over at the waist in a fit of booming laughter.

"The pool robot?!" Angelina gasped, clutching her stomach. "Elias, the machine thinks you’re in love with the vacuum?!"

"Love is incredibly unpredictable, Elias," Alex reasoned logically, his voice completely deadpan. "The pool robot is highly efficient. It works in silence. It cleans without complaining or asking for a raise. Frankly, it possesses many of the qualities I look for in an employee. I can completely understand why your digital avatar would be drawn to it."

"It is a machine that sucks up wet leaves, Mr. Turner," Thorne replied stiffly, his face flushing a dangerous shade of crimson. "It does not have a personality. It is a cylinder with wheels."

"Some of the best relationships in Hollywood are built on far less," Gillian pointed out, wiping mascara from her eyes.

"I am requesting an immediate algorithmic veto, sir," Thorne demanded, ignoring the actresses. "I have men under my command who have served in active war zones. If they see a broadcast of me serenading a pool filter, my authority will be permanently, irreparably compromised."

Alex let out a slow, suffering sigh. "Censorship requires me to actively log into the administrative dashboard, Thorne. It requires typing. You are asking me to burn calories to save your digital dignity."

"I will personally dismantle the server rack with a hammer if this airs, sir."

"Violence against hardware is an ergonomic tragedy," Alex warned softly. He lazily raised his right hand, waving a finger in the general direction of the ceiling. "Vanguard AI. Acknowledge."

A soft, synthesized chime echoed from the room’s speakers.

"Delete the pool-cleaner romance arc," Alex dictated to the empty room. "Re-route the digital Commander’s affection toward something more socially acceptable. Give him a passionate rivalry with a remarkably stubborn hedge."

Chime.

"Thank you, sir," Thorne muttered, looking incredibly relieved. "A hedge is significantly more dignified."

"We aim to please, Commander," Alex smiled lazily. "Now, please dim the lights on your way out. The digital crying on the monitor is giving me a headache, and I need to conserve my energy for absolutely nothing."

Thorne offered a sharp bow and vanished back into the hallway. The Harem Council devolved into another fit of giggles, while Snoop Dogg shook his head in absolute reverence.

The world outside could keep spinning, but inside the living room, the greatest threat to their existence was an overly imaginative supercomputer writing fanfiction about the security staff. Alex closed his eyes, entirely satisfied with his frictionless reality.
