"And there is another problem." This time, Sylvaris’s voice became colder. "We Ancients were never supposed to become involved in the conflicts of the Continents. That was another condition upon which the Oath was established. The Continents would remain separate from us, and we would remain separate from their conflicts."
Her gaze remained calm, but the atmosphere inside the Basilica became heavier. "Yet that condition has also been violated." Neither Solaris nor Eliana moved. They immediately understood what Sylvaris was referring to. Someone had manipulated events in a way that eventually affected the Ancients themselves, and although the Ancients had not directly suffered any major damage from it, the fact that someone had managed to drag them into a conflict between Continents was already enough to constitute a serious violation.
For thousands of years, the purpose of that separation had been simple. The Continents could fight among themselves if they wished, but the Ancients would never become another force involved in those conflicts, nor would the Continents ever use the existence of the Ancients as a tool in their own struggles. That boundary was one of the few things that had remained unchanged throughout the history of Eliomor.
Sylvaris didn’t point toward anyone. She didn’t accuse a single ruler.
Instead, she simply stated the consequence. "If the Continents believe they can operate against one another through the shadows and eventually involve the Ancients in their conflicts without consequence, then the Oath has already failed in one of its most important purposes."
Her eyes narrowed slightly. "And if none of the Continents are willing to respect the boundary established by that Oath, then we have no reason to continue enforcing it either."
The silence became heavier.
None of the rulers could argue against her words because they understood the logic behind them. The Oath had been created under a different set of circumstances, when the Continents still followed its restrictions more directly and the possibility of someone manipulating conflicts from the shadows had been far more limited to such as spies. But the situation had changed over the countless years that had passed since its creation.
If one Continent could secretly manipulate Monsters and breach into another, use forces that could not be traced back to their origin, and then hide behind the protection of the Treaty when retaliation became possible, then the Treaty wasn’t preventing conflict anymore. It was simply determining who could fight openly and who had to fight indirectly.
Strong oppressed the weak. That was the simplest law of this World. The Ancients had never needed to explain why they stood above the Continents, because their strength alone had been enough to establish that position. But now the Continents had begun dragging them into their political conflicts, turning a boundary that had existed for thousands of years into something that could be crossed whenever someone found a way around the rules.
Sylvaris would not allow that to continue. "Whoever dares to involve the Ancients in their conflicts..." Her voice became completely cold. "Will eventually pay the price for it."
No name was mentioned, no accusation was made. Yet every ruler understood the warning.
Even Solaris and Eliana remained silent because they knew that the words weren’t merely directed toward whoever had caused the recent incident. Sylvaris was making the position of the Ancients clear to everyone present. Whatever had happened this time could not be allowed to become a precedent for future conflicts.
Sylvaris then leaned back slightly, "The severance of the Treaty will not mean that we are encouraging you to destroy one another. It simply means that the restrictions created thousands of years ago can no longer be relied upon to maintain the balance they were designed to protect."
Her gaze moved from one ruler to another. "From this point onward, if one Continent chooses to take direct action against another because of what has happened in the shadows, that decision will belong to them."
She paused before adding, "And there is one final reason."
Everyone’s attention sharpened as she spoke, "I think you all know about those strange Monsters."
Her expression became serious.
"I won’t beat around the bush, they are dangerous."
She stopped for a moment before continuing, "Not merely because of their numbers, nor because they appeared across multiple Continents at once. They are dangerous because we do not know what they are, where they came from, or what their true purpose is."
Her eyes swept across the table, "Their appearance alone would have been concerning enough, but the manner in which they appeared is far more troublesome. They didn’t emerge from a single location and remain there. They appeared across different regions, forcing multiple Continents to respond at almost the same time."
The rulers remained silent as they listened, "That means someone or something possesses the ability to move them, control them, or otherwise influence where they appear. And if such a force exists and you cannot do anything about it because of the treaty, then continuing to restrict yourselves from directly investigating one another will only create more opportunities for the same thing to happen again."
Sylvaris’s voice remained calm, but every word carried the seriousness of her conclusion. "Today it was Monsters. Tomorrow, it could be something else entirely."
The severance was no longer simply a political decision. It was a recognition that the old rules were no longer sufficient for the World they were currently living in. The Oath had served its purpose for thousands of years, but the circumstances that had allowed it to maintain peace had gradually changed.
And if the World itself had changed, then continuing to rely on rules created for a different era could become more dangerous than abandoning them.
With that, everyone nodded in agreement. Sylvaris turned toward each ruler one by one until her gaze finally settled on Velmira, who wasn’t one of the Rulers but was still one of the strongest individuals present. ’She is one of the few Eliomor has made a direct contract with. I can sense a massive amount of rage boiling inside her...Interesting. Is she the only one here who doesn’t even care about the Treaty? Heh, if it wasn’t for her contract with Eliomor...never mind.’
She dismissed the thought before it could develop any further and shook her head once before tapping the table with her index finger. The moment she did, something emerged from thin air directly in front of her. Its shape was similar to a rectangular piece of paper, nothing particularly remarkable about its appearance, but what immediately caught everyone’s attention was the strange glow surrounding it.
It was something the rulers recognized perfectly.
And Velmira recognized it better than anyone,’Soul Force...is that the Oath in the form of a document? Or was the paper itself created from Soul Force?’
Everyone narrowed their eyes as they stared at the mysterious document floating before Sylvaris, trying to understand what they were looking at. Yet before anyone could ask, Sylvaris finally spoke, "This...is the Oath of Treaty, in the form of a document. We Ancients were instructed to keep it safe in our hands since an era even your ancestors had no knowledge of."
