There was no room for any sort of mistake whatsoever. Alex raised his right hand and felt as the cold icy energy rapidly gathered around his palm. Deathfrost Bloom was just the right ability for the job thanks to the fact that it was a long ranged attack.

In less than a microsecond the familiar icy power condensed rapidly, forming a long, razor-sharp shard. But this time Alex didn’t create many of them. Instead he focused on only one shard to execute the job. And for it to properly do its job it had to be at least long.

So the shard continued growing until it was approximately one meter long, its surface covered in intricate patterns of frost as an intense cold radiated from it, whispering the eerie promise of death just like its name.

Alex narrowed his eyes. With his gaze locked stone dead onto the exact spot he had remembered from his battle in the training realm. Precisely between the first two demonic eyes.

Without so much as a moment’s worth of hesitation, he aimed directly at the creature’s forehead, and then fired.

WHOOSH! The Deathfrost Bloom tore through the air at terrifying speed. The Bone Demon General’s eyes widened the instant it felt the one-meter-long shard pierced straight through its forehead.

For a brief moment, everything became as quiet as a graveyard as the creature’s enormous body froze in place. Its four demonic eyes remained wide open as the icy energy from the black icy shard protruding from the back of its skull spread through its brain.

A thin layer of frost rapidly covered the creature’s head and it opened its jagged mouth to give out one final cry but failed miserably and then its body finally began to fall.

BOOOM!! The Vile Bone Demon General crashed heavily onto the ground, raising a massive cloud of dust into the air. Now dead with no breath of life in its body.

Phil slowly lowered his war hammer, still reeling from how the monster had just died before flashing Alex a thumbs up.

"Kid you really are something aren’t you. That icy ability of yours really works like a dang sniper for quick killing. If only you were also in my squad now that’d be great."

Sylph meanwhile stood completely still. Then she turned her head to stare at the fallen Ascendant-level threat before glancing at Alex and giving a small approving nod.

"You did well."

Sylph’s expression remained calm as she continued, "Though your ability isn’t overwhelmingly destructive like Claire’s, but that’s not necessarily a weakness. In fact, it makes you extremely well suited for assassination and quick finishings. If you can identify an enemy’s weakness and exploit it from a distance, you can end a fight before your opponent even realizes what happened. That’s very useful."

Alex smiled calmly.

"Honestly, it was nothing. If you and Phil hadn’t provided such a wonderful opening, it would’ve been a little difficult to land the attack."

Sylph shook her head slightly.

"Knowing when and where to attack is also part of combat."

Before Alex could respond, footsteps approached from behind. Claire and the others soon arrived, with Claire walking at the front.

Her clothes were slightly dirty from the battle, but she otherwise looked perfectly fine. She glanced at the dead Bone Demon General lying on the ground before looking at Alex.

"Not bad." That was all she said before walking past him without another word.

Alex blinked.

That was all she had to say? This woman really knew how to hold a grudge. He barely had time to continue thinking about it before another familiar voice came from behind.

"Hmph. He only took advantage of the two captains’ effort to kill the monster."

Gab crossed his arms, his pink hair looking slightly disheveled after the battle. Although he was trying to act as though nothing had happened, there were several scratches across his clothes and faint red claw marks that should heal in a day or two thanks to his Awakened Physiology.

Mia immediately puffed out her cheeks and glared at him.

"Says the guy who almost lost his head if Stephanie hadn’t killed the monster behind you."

Gab’s expression stiffened.

"What the heck are you talking about you bratty little girl?"

Mia pointed accusingly at him.

"You heard me! You were so busy screaming that you didn’t even notice that monster sneaking up behind you. If Stephanie hadn’t taken it down, you would’ve been missing a head by now."

Gab’s face became slightly red.

"I wasn’t screaming. If you had a brain cell you would realize that I was only using my ability!"

"Scoff. Says the guy with a nonexistent brain cell who acts like he owns the place but cowers at the sign of danger."

Mia placed her hands on her hips.

"Besides, if you were in Deputy Captain Alex’s shoes, you would’ve screamed too, because that’s all you’re good at. Even your ability is Sonic Scream, which is basically just screaming really loudly!"

Gab’s face twitched.

"My ability isn’t just screaming!"

Mia narrowed her eyes.

"Then what is it?"

Gab opened his mouth. Then closed it.

Mia smiled triumphantly.

"That’s what I thought."

Alex looked at the bubbly girl for several seconds before trembling slightly.

Just as that thought crossed his mind, the familiar cheerful voice suddenly chimed inside his head.

[Alex, this girl is already my favorite.]

Alex’s expression remained unchanged.

[Hurry up and make her wifey.]

Alex immediately ignored the System. There was no use talking to her, but later he would still have to ask why the monster he met today was similar to the one in the training realm.

Meanwhile, Phil had already taken out a strange device that looked like an advanced walkie-talkie. He pressed a button on its side before bringing it close to his mouth.

"Squad Captain Phil reporting. The Ascendant-level threat has been eliminated. The portal remains active, but no additional creatures have emerged since the initial wave. It should disappear by any minute now."

He paused, apparently listening to the response.

"Understood. We’ll remain here until the containment team arrives."

Phil lowered the device and looked around. The battlefield was almost unrecognizable compared to what it had been before the battle started.

Buildings lay in large piles of rubbles, sections of roads had been torn open, and enormous craters littered the ground. Burnt remains of the Bone Demons were scattered across the area, while thick smoke still rose from several locations.

Tonya slowly turned around, taking in the destruction.

"Yeah... we really trashed this place up." She scratched the side of her head. "Looks like the Bureau is going to spend quite a lot fixing all this."

Mia nodded.

"Definitely."

Stephanie also nodded in agreement as she looked toward one of the ruined buildings.

"They’re going to need more than just a few construction workers for this."

Alex looked around. Considering that the battle had only lasted a short time, the amount of destruction was ridiculous. And this was supposedly only a Code Yellow emergency.

He couldn’t help wondering what a Code Red or Code Black incident would actually look like. It would most likely be something cataclysmic.

Sylph suddenly clapped her hands once, bringing everyone’s attention back to her.

"Enough standing around. We still have work to do." Everyone immediately looked toward her. "Gather the bodies of the remaining Bone Demons."

Drew blinked in surprise and couldn’t help asking.

"But captain, why do we have to gather the bodies?"

"It is because their bodies contain valuable inner cores which provide energy needed to run the island and improve our strength a bit. So we need to gather as many monster bodies as possible before the cleanup teams arrive to collect the body and extract the inner cores before giving each of us a share for participating in today’s battle."

Alex’s eyes widened in surprise. So the inner cores from monsters could also improve Awakened strength? That was truly fascinating.

But it seemed like the help it brought was only little if not there would have been thousands of Masters and Transcendents, because Nyx’s father had once said there were only less than a hundred Masters world wide and Phil had told him only ten countries had Transcendents.

"Understood." Everyone responded and immediately began spreading out.

Mia grabbed Stephanie and shy Ella, and headed toward one section of the battlefield, while Drew and Allen went in another direction. Tonya, Carl and Chris followed them, with Gab reluctantly joining the group while still complaining under his breath.

Alex watched them leave before turning toward Sylph.

"Captain."

Sylph stopped.

"Yes?"

Alex hesitated for a moment before speaking.

"Can I ask you something that’s been on the back of my mind?"

Sylph looked at him.

"Of course. Ask away."

Alex glanced toward the surrounding battlefield before returning his attention to her.

"The Bureau has been dealing with all these Code emergencies, right?"

"Yes."

"Does it happen frequently or is it something rare?"

"Hmm. I won’t say it happens everyday but it happens at least once or twice a week, and if we’re lucky it takes months before another attack happens."

"Okay. But from what Mia told me, Code Black has happened before. A Transcendent-level threat appeared, and several Transcendent Realm Awakeneds from different countries had to intervene because the situation was serious enough to almost cause the destruction of an entire continent."

Sylph’s expression slowly became more serious. Alex continued.

"So why doesn’t the rest of the world know about any of this?"

"I mean, we’re talking about monsters, portals, people capable of large scale destruction, and even the Transcendent Realm level threat that happened years back. Yet ordinary civilians seem to know almost nothing about any of it."

He folded his arms.

"If something like that happened, there should’ve been massive news coverage. People should’ve seen the destruction. There should’ve been videos, reports, eyewitnesses... something."

Alex continued.

"How does the Bureau hide something that massive from the public?"

For several seconds, the only sounds were the distant voices of the other members searching through the battlefield and the crackling of fires left behind by Claire’s attack.

Sylph finally lowered her gaze and a faint sigh escaped her lips.

"Since you’re now part of the squad then I will tell you..."
