Building The Perfect Harem With My Heavenly Desire System
Chapter 203: An Ability Broken Beyond Measure.Chapter 203
"Since you’re now part of the squad, then I will tell you..." Sylph paused for a moment before continuing. "The reason why the rest of the world doesn’t know about all these incidents is related to our Bureau Chief."
Alex’s expression became slightly more serious.
"Hmm...?"
Sylph nodded.
"You might not know this but she’s the strongest person in the entire country. More importantly, she’s also the only Transcendent Realm Awakened in the country."
Alex’s eyes narrowed slightly. Wasn’t it the silver haired beauty Sylph was talking about. But what had to do with all this and the Transcendent Realm woman? If Sylph just said it’s related to the Transcendent Realm woman, could it be that woman had an ability that was responsible for why people don’t seem to know about stuff like this?
But what Sylph said next answered the questions in his mind.
"She possesses a very formidable ability that allows her to manipulate or alter people’s minds on an enormous scale."
Alex’s expression changed.
"Wait! Did you just say mind manipulation?!"
"Yes. I don’t really know much about it but what I do know is that her ability allows her to influence people’s memories, perceptions, and even how they interpret what they’ve witnessed. Whenever one of these emergencies happens, especially when civilians are involved, she can manipulate the minds of the affected population and make them believe the destruction was caused by something else."
Alex stared at her.
"Something like a natural disaster..."
"Exactly. Usually a natural disaster like earthquakes, explosions caused by industrial accidents, gas leaks, landslides, things like that. Just whatever explanation is most believable for the situation."
Alex sucked in a deep breath. So that’s how they did it.
He had wondered how the Bureau could possibly conceal something as massive as an entire army of monsters appearing from a portal.
But with an ability like that, the answer was surprisingly simple. But still that ability was really broken beyond measure!
"I’ve got to admit that’s... pretty broken." Alex muttered while slowly rubbing his chin.
Sylph gave a small nod.
"It is. And that is even nothing. I’ve heard rumors that she possesses another ability that is far more powerful than this one, but I don’t know whether they’re true or not. Nobody besides her knows about it."
Sylph looked toward the distant ruins.
"All I know is that whenever something related to Awakeneds happens, she takes care of the civilians’ memories afterward. That’s one of the reasons the Bureau can continue operating without exposing the existence of Awakeneds to the public."
Alex remained silent. The more he thought about it, the more ridiculous that ability seemed. Manipulating the minds of thousands, perhaps even millions of people, wasn’t something someone like him could casually comprehend.
Even if the Bureau Chief couldn’t directly control everyone like puppets, simply being able to alter their memories and perceptions on such a massive scale was already down right terrifying. And there was still the fact she might have another even more broken ability.
Alex suddenly frowned.
But wait! There was something that didn’t make any sense. If her ability is capable of doing all that... then why didn’t she alter his memory?
Alex’s mind immediately returned to the rather embarrassing, but at the same time, amazing incident from before. He had seen the Bureau Chief’s naked figure.
Aside from the fact that she looked like a goddess and almost wanted to kill him, she had also possessed every opportunity to manipulate his mind at that time and wipe those memories of seeing her naked. But she hadn’t. Why?
Before Alex could think about it any further, a familiar voice suddenly chimed inside his head.
[Hello, all-powerful System here. Duh!! I’m the one who helped you]
Alex blinked internally.
’You?’
[Who else? Why do you think she was so interested in having you join the Bureau?]
Alex thought about it for a moment.
’Well, I thought it was because she couldn’t sense any Primordial Essence coming from me and found me unique.’
[Yes, that’s also another reason.]
The System’s voice became slightly smug.
[But it was because of my help that she didn’t discover you had a System. Otherwise, you might have ended up as a government lab rat.]
Alex’s expression immediately became serious.
That was a rather unpleasant thought.
He could already imagine being locked inside some underground laboratory while a group of scientists poked him with needles strong enough to pierce his skin and performed endless experiments.
No thanks.
’Thanks, System.’
[You’re welcome. But a quick friendly reminder, I can’t always do that cause it takes quite a lot out of me because of her higher rank. So try to be careful around her]
After saying that, the System immediately went silent again.
Alex sighed internally. Sometimes, despite how annoying the System could be, it really was useful.
He returned his attention to Sylph and before Alex could say anything else, a distant rumbling sound suddenly reached their ears.
Both of them looked toward the sky and saw several black jets approaching swiftly from the distance. And next to them was a familiar figure he recognized all too well.
It was the beautiful silver-haired woman who moved through the sky at a leisurely pace, her long hair fluttering gently in the wind as she casually flew beside the approaching jets.
Alex’s eyes widened slightly. Even though he had already seen her before, he still couldn’t help being mesmerized by her beauty.
There was something almost unreal about this woman’s beauty that made one think she was probably the goddess of beauty herself.
Her silver hair reflected the moonlight, while her beautiful features remained calm and emotionless. Her eyes carried an indifferent sharpness that made it difficult to tell what she was thinking.
And the thing was that there was no sense of presence coming off from her. It was as if she were invisible to the world. She slowly descended and landed several meters away from them.
Sylph immediately straightened and greeted respectfully.
"Bureau Chief."
The woman nodded slightly.
"We were able to eliminate the threat." Sylph gestured toward the enormous corpse lying in the distance. "The Ascendant-level Vile Bone Demon General has been killed. The remaining Bone Demons have also been dealt with."
The Bureau Chief looked around and her gaze swept across the destroyed buildings, massive craters, shattered roads, and scorched remains scattered throughout the battlefield.
For several seconds, she said nothing. Then she calmly spoke.
"You all did really well. Thank you."
After saying that, she turned her head toward the jets and said.
"Have the monster bodies packed and transported back to the Bureau."
Several people immediately stepped out from one of the jets.
"Yes, Chief."
"And send the rest of the cleanup teams here. The damage from this Code Yellow emergency needs to be dealt with before civilians begin returning to the area."
"Understood."
The Bureau Chief’s gaze briefly shifted toward Alex. Their eyes met for only a second before she turned away.
"That will be all."
The Bureau Chief walked toward the battlefield while the Bureau personnel immediately began carrying out her orders.
Alex watched her for a few seconds before finally turning around. The squad eventually regrouped and began walking toward their assigned jet.
The battle was finally over and although the area looked like a disaster zone, nobody from the two squads had suffered any serious injuries.
Considering that they had just faced an Ascendant-level threat and thousands of monsters, that was already an impressive result.
As they approached the jet, Allen suddenly stretched his arms above his head.
"Since we just stopped a Code Yellow emergency, how about we treat ourselves and go out for a celebratory meal? Who’s with me?"
Chris immediately raised a hand to his face and slowly rubbed his forehead.
"Seriously, Allen?"
Allen looked confused.
"What?"
"It’s almost midnight. What place do you think is going to be open at this time?"
Allen paused with His expression becoming thoughtful.
"That’s... Actually, that’s a good question."
Mia giggled.
"You didn’t think about that before suggesting it?"
"Hey, the important thing was the celebration!"
Gab snorted.
"Idiot."
Allen immediately turned toward him.
"What did you just say, bum?"
Gab responded with a mocking smile.
"You heard me."
"Do you want to repeat that?"
"Can you two please argue after we get back," Tonya said, sounding slightly exhausted.
Ella nodded.
"Y-yes. I’m tired."
Chris lowered his hand from his face.
"Finally, someone with common sense."
The group continued arguing and joking as they boarded the jet. Alex simply remained quiet. He listened to their conversation while occasionally glancing out the window.
Tonight had been rather eventful. He had discovered a strange portal, fought an Ascendant-level monster and had also learned that the Bureau regularly dealt with emergencies that ordinary civilians didn’t even know existed.
And now he had learned that the strongest person in the country possessed an ability capable of manipulating the minds of an enormous number of people.
There were clearly many things about this world that he still didn’t understand. And if he were being frank here, Alex had this feeling he was only just beginning to scratch the surface.
...After saying goodbye to the others, Alex made his way home. Though the Bureau had been generous to provide him with a room inside the facility, he still decided to return back home.
After everything that had happened tonight, there was nothing quite as good as home sweet home.
The moment he entered his room, Alex barely bothered changing before collapsing onto his bed.
His body sank into the soft mattress. And then he stared at the ceiling for several seconds. After the chaos of the battlefield, this silence felt strangely peaceful.
Alex slowly closed his eyes before opening them again.
Crap! Why hadn’t he asked the system earlier why the creatures today looked almost identical to the creature he had fought inside the System’s training realm?
Sigh. Guess he would just have to ask later, since he was too tired to do that now. Eventually his thoughts soon drifted toward Nyx and Jade. He found himself wondering how they were both doing over there. Especially Nyx, since she was pregnant, after all.
"Sigh. I wonder how Nyx and Jade are doing over there..."
