Chapter 205

So if she had actually come to his home and asked for his help, the situation had to be very serious. After a few more seconds, Celine finally opened her mouth.

"I need your help in killing Marcus."

The moment Celine finished speaking, Alex felt his eyes go wide as he stared at her in complete and utter shock. For several long seconds, he simply remained there with the pancake still in his hand, still trying to process what he had just heard.

Celine wanted his help to kill Marcus. Marcus! One of the underworld rulers of the city and most importantly, her boss!

The same Marcus she had apparently been working under for who knows how long. Alex blinked several times before a strange thought entered his mind.

Maybe she was just joking. Because there was no way Celine seriously wanted to kill Marcus. She was an assassin who had been sent after him twice already because Marcus instructed it, and as far as Alex knew, Marcus was the person she worked for.

Or perhaps this was all a scheme. Maybe because she had failed to kill him twice and had decided that asking for his help was the perfect way to lower his guard before making another attempt in the place where she might feel more in control and that was Marcus’ place.

The more Alex thought about it, the more suspicious the whole thing became. Then he suddenly laughed as if she were only joking and said,

"What a funny joke. You of all people wanting to kill Marcus? Please don’t make me laugh." Alex waved the pancake slightly before taking another bite. "So, jokes aside, tell me the real reason why you really need my help."

Celine continued staring at him with that deadpan expression.

"Did I ever say I was joking? I am as serious as I can be."

The instant she said that, Alex immediately stopped chewing. Celine’s voice remained calm, but there was something unusually serious behind those words coming out of her mouth.

"I really do need your help in killing Marcus."

The smile slowly disappeared from Alex’s face. He put the pancake down and leaned back against the couch.

"You’re really serious about this?"

Celine nodded and Alex studied her carefully.

"Alright, then. First of all, why do you want to kill Marcus? Isn’t he your boss or something And second of all, even if you really wanted to kill him, why do you need my help? You’re already an Ascendant. Shouldn’t you be strong enough to get the job done yourself without even breaking a sweat?"

Celine remained silent for several seconds before finally walking toward the couch. She sat down a short distance away from Alex.

"The reason I want to kill Marcus is personal, and as for why I need your help... Marcus isn’t as weak as he makes himself appear in everyone’s eyes."

"He’s spent years maintaining the appearance that the three major underworld rulers only possess Vanguard Realm experts. Most people believe that the Kade family is powerful because they possess an Ascendant, while people like Marcus, Nyx and the others only have Vanguard-level subordinates."

Alex nodded slowly. He already knew that.

"However, Marcus has been hiding something." Celine’s black eyes became colder. "He has a sworn brotherhood with three Ascendant Realm rogue mercenaries."

Alex’s expression changed slightly.

"Please hold on, did you just say three? But how?"

"Yes. As for how, they were men who he had helped when they were almost on the point of death, when he was in Russia for a huge drug deal. They don’t officially work for him, which is why nobody knows about their connection. But if Marcus calls, they’ll come. And each one of them is really formidable in their own right."

Alex remained silent. Three Ascendants, huh? For a lone Ascendant Realm, facing them would be like courting death. But for someone like him, he was more than enough for them alone, thanks to his physical prowess and skills.

Celine clenched her hands slightly.

"That’s far more than I can handle alone. I could possibly defeat one of them, but fighting all three while trying to reach Marcus would be too risky." She looked at Alex. "So I decided to bury my pride and ask for your help."

Alex didn’t respond immediately. His expression became thoughtful. He still wasn’t entirely convinced. There was something about the whole situation that didn’t sit right with him.

"If that’s the case, then I can understand why you need another Ascendant.... But I still need to know the personal reason why you want to kill Marcus so bad."

Celine’s eyes narrowed slightly.

"Why is that?"

"Because I’m still having doubts." Alex’s voice became more serious. "You’re asking me to help you kill someone who is supposedly your boss. That’s not exactly something I can casually agree to without knowing why. But If you don’t want to tell me, that’s fine. Because then I’ll just refuse."

Celine’s expression remained frozen. For several seconds, she said nothing. Then she slowly closed her eyes and tightened her small hands into fists. When she finally opened her eyes again, the hostility that usually filled them was now gone.

What remained inside those beautiful twin void eyes was something Alex had never seen from her before. It was pain. The same kind of pain he felt whenever he remembered how Emily had cheated on him with his best friend, made him raise hers and Zack’s children, and then kill him in cold blood.

"I don’t remember much about my parents." Her voice was unusually quiet. "Almost all my life, I remember being raised in a large orphanage. There was a little girl there."

Celine’s gaze lowered.

"She was sweet. Innocent. And extremely stubborn. Stubborn to the point that you almost wanted to spank her"

A faint smile briefly appeared on her face, but it disappeared almost immediately.

"She used to call me big sister. And at first, I hated it. I remember always telling her to stop calling me that. I would tell her that we weren’t related and that she should find someone else to bother." Her fingers slowly curled inward. "But that girl never seemed to listen."

Celine’s voice trembled faintly.

"Every morning, she would still come looking for me, saying she wanted to play with me. Every night, she would still call me big sister. You know, she would even try to share her food with me whenever I got punished. Eventually, I guess I got used to it. Then I accepted it. Her name was Dawn. Even now, I still think it was one of the prettiest names I’d ever heard."

The name lingered in the room as Celine stared ahead.

"For years, that orphanage was the only home either of us knew. We thought we were safe there." Her expression gradually became colder. "But little did we know we were wrong. That damned place was no home. It was nothing more than all a disguise. A perfectly, well placed disguise. And behind the seemingly innocent appearance, it was actually part of an illegal organ trafficking operation."

Alex’s hands slowly tightened as he heard that. He was already beginning to know where this was going to.

"All those happy children that thought they were going to be adopted never knew that their only real fates were to die tragically. And do you know the person behind all this? Hahaha... it was that bastard, Marcus! The man considered it as one of his ways of making money, not bothering about the lives that were all dying because of him!!"

"When I was fourteen, Dawn and I were selected. We were supposed to have our organs harvested for the benefit of some sick heir from a wealthy family."

"You know... I still remember being taken into a room, not knowing what was going on. If I knew, maybe I would have tried to escape with dawn, but no I was an idiot! When I got there, I remember seeing Dawn also lying there. Looking scared but clearly refusing to cry because I once told her I hated people who cried. That dumb girl didn’t cry."

Celine’s fists trembled.

"And then I saw the same doctor who used to joke with the kids, preparing to operate on her with an indifferent face. Not caring that she was only a child... A child who was supposed to be playing princess or drinking from tea cups was about to have her organs harvested"

She closed her eyes briefly, trying to suppress the tears pooling in her eyes, with all her might.

"The moment I heard her cry in pain from the scalpel digging into her skin, something inside me just broke and that was the moment I Awakened."

"I killed everyone in that room." Celine opened her eyes. "Everyone except Dawn. Not one of those hideous beasts survived. Afterward, I escaped with Dawn, who was afraid of me, but at the same time depended on me like I was her entire world."

Celine’s expression became bitter. "As we escaped, we encountered Marcus and I... I... tried to kill Marcus that day. I really did... But I was only fourteen, and just a newly Awakened human. While he was surrounded by various Awakened subordinates, so I was easily defeated."

Celine looked down at her hands.

"When Marcus realized that I was an Awakened, instead of killing me, the bastard considered it a waste and actually wanted me to work for him. But I was a really stubborn person at that time, so I refused. Even when he threatened to have his men take turns on me and then finish me off, I refused."

She took a slow breath.

"So he changed his approach. He had one of his men grab Dawn. And Marcus told me that if I didn’t join him, Dawn would die."

Her eyes trembled so much that it hurt just to see the woman in this condition.

"He knew exactly what he was doing. He wanted such a pure and innocent soul to die. But I couldn’t watch that little girl die. She was my only family, how could I ever watch her die."

Her voice cracked slightly.

"So I agreed like the idiot I was. To make sure I couldn’t betray him, Marcus had Dawn taken somewhere else." Celine said, digging her fingers deep into her palms. "He promised me she would be safe and that no harm would come over her as long as I was obedient. And for years, he kept her alive as leverage."

Alex’s eyes narrowed.

"Whenever I completed a mission, I was allowed to speak with Dawn for only one minute." Celine gave a hollow laugh, that made one feel the depth of her sadness."

"One minute. That was all I got. One minute just to hear her voice and know she was still alive. But still I always looked forward to that one minute. After all, it was the only time I could talk to the one person who was my entire world. And then I had to go back to being his assassin."

Alex’s anger continued building.

"Yesterday, that was when everything changed." Celine’s voice became almost emotionless. "I happened to be passing by when I overheard Marcus talking to one of his trusted subordinates... T-to...
