Caesar's Moon

Chapter 28 - 27: Cutthroat

Chapter 28: Chapter 27: Cutthroat

As Caesar was walking down the street in the afternoon, she had a recollection of what Cedric said to her earlier.

"The more the wins, the higher their chances of pays and recognition increases.

Many of them are willing and have become monsters to increase their marketability.

It’s a dog eat dog in that company."

"Of course, it is." Caesar said in her heart, "A company filled with the desperate will no doubt be a cutthroat place to work in.

A place where morals don’t mean much. It’s not like the company itself had any morals to begin with.

I mean ... It is an ero- industry, after all."

"I said I will be as ruthless as I need to be in that ring but the question is can I really do it or is it just talk?" Caesar asked herself as she halted, "I guess the only way to find out is on Thursday. By the way, i haven’t even learnt who my next opponent is.

Who does that little witch, Akari have for me to face on Thursday? No doubt it will be someone like Nero."

While speaking in her heart, Caesar’s phone rang which led her to pick it up and stare at the screen.

On the screen of her phone, the identity of the person calling was someone Caesar labeled as "Zombie boss Plank."

Caesar then clicked the green phone icon and placed the phone on her right ear.

"Hello, boss." Caesar said.

"Caesar, good afternoon. I called you here to remind you of the time you didn’t come for work, yesterday." Mrs Plank said.

Caesar’s eyes widened as she recalled her phone ringing during her flyer work.

"Ah... Uhm... Mrs Plank, I can explain." Caesar said with a nervous smile.

"Of course, you can. I called you several times Miss Moon and you didn’t bother picking up." Mrs Plank replied, "So I’ll let you know that since you failed to come on Wednesday, I’ll expect you to make up for it on Monday afternoon."

"Monday?!" Caesar asked in shock, "But Mrs Plank -"

"No, no, no, Miss Moon. ’Monday’." Mrs Plank said, "I was even generous enough to make it afternoon.

So I’ll be expecting to see you at Happy Havens Memorial, am I understood?"

Caesar stayed quiet for a moment and spoke.

"Yes, ma’am."

"Good." Mrs Plank said.

Mrs Plank hung the phone, leaving Caesar to stay in silence again before she put the phone back into her pocket and sighed.

"Fuck." Caesar muttered.

Later within a dusty three-wheeled vehicle, Caesar sat in the passenger seat beside a fair skinned female beast with a human boy sitting on her laps.

While the vehicle was moving, the boy noticed a group of females, both humans and beastfolks idly standing at a street corner.

Out of curiosity, the boy turned to his mother, tugged her sleeves and spoke.

"Mom... Why are those ladies standing there?"

The beastfolk mother stayed mute for some seconds as she glanced at the women before she shifted her gaze back to her son.

"Those ladies you see there.... They are... Waiting for their husbands." The mother answered, "They are waiting for their husbands to come pick them up."

"Really?" The son asked.

"Yes." The mother answered as the driver who was a dark skinned human with grey stubbles, arched a brow, "Yes, they are. Their husbands seems to be late but they will eventually come for them."

"That’s great!" The son said with a smile.

"Madam! Stop lying to children! Tell him the truth!" The driver said.

Caesar glanced at the driver with a raised eyebrow and shifted her gaze at the mother.

The mother on the other hand, glared at the driver before moving her sight back to her son who was looking at her in confusion.

The mother then sighed and rolled her eyes as she spoke.

"They are prostitutes, darling."

"Prostitutes?" The son asked.

"Yes. Women who get paid money to sleep with men." The mother said.

The son became quiet for a second as he was filled with shock and sadness.

"T-that’s terrible!" The son said, "What will happen to the babies they make?"

Caesar stared at the boy and turned her gaze to the mother before looking away.

The mother stared at her son for a few seconds before moving her sights to the driver.

The beastfolk mother then tilted her head and smirked.

"They becomeTe-tedrivers." The mother answered.

Caesar, hearing that answer, immediately snorted and covered her mouth with her hand to prevent the laughter from coming out.

"Madame, what the fuck?!" The driver said to the beastfolk mother as he whipped his head back with a glare.

Later as Caesar sat on her couch with both legs crossed, watching television as a fair skinned human female was interviewing a fair skinned middle-aged male human in the screen.

"So tell us, what is your take being number one?" The female asked.

"Being number one is not something easy to get." The male answered, "If you want that spot... If you want to dominate, then you must be ready to work hard, work smart and be as ruthless as you can be. Screw everyone else.

In the end, life doesn’t wait for you. People may but you see life... Time... They wait for no one."

"I became the number one in my company because I was willing to put in the work and do whatever it takes to get there." The man continued as he placed his palm on his chest, "People will say ’Oh, you ruined this person. Oh you ruined that person. Do you know how many people lost their livelihood because of where you are now?’ So freaking what? If I was in their position, they wouldn’t have hesitated to pull the plug, so why should I?"

"Sentiments, emotions, pity... They will all slow you down." The man continued as Caesar slightly tilted her head,"They had to put food on their tables and had families to feed? Well so do I.

You got one life to live and how are you going to live it? Are you going to live it getting stomped on by everyone, knowing fully well that you could have done prevented that? Knowing fully well that it should have been them in your position but because you want to play the good guy... ’The nice guy’, you take it?"

"Newsflash: Nice guys finish last!" The man said as he tapped his index finger on the table, "You care about what people say about you or going to say? Well, if you ain’t making enemies then you’re doing something wrong.

Everyone has enemies; some provoked and some not, so do what you got to do and damn their opinions."

"So you’re saying you have to be a scum to be successful?" The female interviewer asked.

"Your words, not mine." The male answered, "All I’m saying is that you must do whatever the hell it takes to get to the top. If you don’t have that hunger to be successful then you’re not ready to move.

People are always going to talk bad about you, so why care that you pull a few plugs?"

"Hold on, can I read you some of the hate comments I have gotten since I became the number one in my company and now run everything?" The man asked as he placed his right hand in his pocket.

"Yes. Sure." The female interviewer answered.

The man brought out his phone and after typing a few things, he then spoke.

"Ah! Here are some of them:

That man is a snake. He has always been a snake.

He politicked a lot of people out of their jobs to get there.

He probably had some mmmm with his boss to take control of the company.

Of course, he became a billionaire. Isn’t that how billionaires reason? Always taking from others to fill up their pockets."

"You know, I don’t get this." The man said to the interviewer as he placed his phone back into his pocket, "I don’t think I ever will."

"Why?" The man asked with a smile as he spread his arms apart, "Why is success a bad thing? Why do people hate on you because you are millionaire? Because you’re a billionaire? Why?

It’s very simple: Envy. Not jealousy... Envy. Envy that they couldn’t be in your spot. Envy that they don’t have what you have.

That’s all there is."

"They don’t care about the work you put in to get there. They don’t care that you once came from the grassroots." The man continued as he narrowed his eyes, "They see the top but they don’t see the cost."

"Uhm... What are we talking about, exactly?" The female interviewer asked.

"What I’m saying is it doesn’t matter what you do because in the end, you’ll still have haters." The man replied, "If you want to move up, then don’t give a damn about opinions. Don’t give a damn making friends and enemies.

If they were in your shoes, they wouldn’t hesitate to take you out of the equation. If they were in your shoes, they would be having the time of their lives.

I know. I’ve been there."

"So my advice to all those guys who are concerned about whether they can live with what they’ve done or not..." The man continued as he turned his attention to the camera, "Blot out those noise. Blot out the noise in your heart. Blot out the noise of the people around you.

I didn’t say become a scum but be ruthless. Because they will be ruthless to you."

"In fact, they already are." The man said with a smile, "It’s survival of the fittest. You either adapt or you perish."

"Okay. That’s all for today." The interviewer said as Caesar narrowed her eyes, "Now-"

Caesar immediately used the remote to turn off the television.

Her tail swayed from left to right before she tilted her head down and stared at the ground in silence while her ears flattened.

She then sighed and muttered.

"Boy..."
