Chapter 1246 - 1346: He Came Last Night?

Chapter 1246: Chapter 1346: He Came Last Night?

Secretary-General Wang thought he wasn’t going, so he said to the driver, "Head back to the villa."

Unexpectedly, King Jingyao said, "It’s good to at least go take a look."

Wang Jingchuan then instructed the driver to head over to Lin Hua’s place... When they were done, King Jingyao said quietly, "Prepared so much, imagined so much, and in the end I go there empty-handed."

Wang Jingchuan spoke gently, "This whole thing was an accident."

King Jingyao thought to himself, not knowing whether Lin Hua knew he was coming over...

But what he actually asked Wang Jingchuan was, "How’s Xiao Yue?"

"He’s with the Old Lady, you can rest easy! And she goes to see Madam every other day. I heard Madam is planning to go over to the Old Lady’s place for a meal in a few days... With the Old Lady mediating you can relax; this matter definitely has room to turn around." Wang Jingchuan continued to reassure him.

In his heart he thought, his boss right now is completely at a loss, that usual drive of his is gone. He must really care, to end up like this... Sigh, why did he lose his head back then, he couldn’t stop him no matter how he tried.

He spoke, and King Jingyao listened. After a long silence, he finally said softly, "This whole thing really is an apology owed to the Old Lady."

He knew, the Old Lady has been strong all her life. Her own son makes a mistake and now she, as the old mother, has to trail behind cleaning up after him like a child; she can’t possibly be feeling good about it. Even if Lin Hua respects her, it’s still hard on her.

As they were talking, the car had already entered the underground parking lot of Lin Hua’s apartment building. Wang Jingchuan had intended to go up with him, but King Jingyao waved his hand, "I’ll go up alone, it’s fine. If I don’t come down in half an hour, then pick me up tomorrow."

Wang Jingchuan helped him out of the car and whispered, "I’ll see you to the door."

King Jingyao smiled, "You’re treating me like I’m made of glass."

Wang Jingchuan smiled too, and didn’t say anything else.

The two of them went upstairs together. As soon as he saw the door open, Wang Jingchuan took his leave.

The door was opened by Aunt Zhang. As soon as she saw King Jingyao she hurriedly pulled him inside, nervously asking, "How are things? Nothing serious, right?"

"Aren’t I standing here just fine?" Aunt Zhang was an old hand of the Wang Family, and King Jingyao was familiar with her. He nudged her toward the kitchen, "I’m starving, just throw together a bowl of noodles for me."

Tears glistened in Aunt Zhang’s eyes; her heart ached for him. "It’s this late and you still don’t know to eat something."

"Aren’t I craving your cooking?" King Jingyao coaxed her.

Aunt Zhang didn’t buy it. "You’re obviously craving that one, don’t you start sweet-talking this old woman."

She pointed toward the inside, "She’s asleep."

King Jingyao lowered his voice as well, "I’ll go take a look."

Aunt Zhang patted his hand. "Walk lightly. She hasn’t been sleeping well these days, and it was hard enough for her to drift off tonight, don’t wake her."

King Jingyao nodded, kicked off his shoes, and tiptoed toward the master bedroom.

He’d been here two or three times back when they weren’t married yet, not even boyfriend and girlfriend yet. Late-night visits to a beauty’s boudoir, all for romance, but in fact it was just to drink a cup of coffee and listen to her play the violin, nothing more...

Now it was deep in the night, and as those memories surfaced his heart turned soft. By the time he reached the bedroom door and pushed it open, he was already a mess inside... Lin Hua was in there.

In the faint light, he saw her lying quietly beneath the white covers, long black hair covering most of her face, only a small, delicate chin showing.

She’d lost weight, looking frail.

Suddenly King Jingyao thought of someone.

Zhou Yu.

At this moment Lin Hua actually looked a little like Zhou Yu. Zhou Yu was that kind of exquisite beauty who seems as if a gust of wind could blow her away. But Lin Hua wasn’t; she was gentle and composed, dignified. And now she’d become like this because of him, hadn’t she!

Just the thought of it brought an ache. When they got married he’d sworn to make her happy for a lifetime, but only a few years in and he’d hurt her to this extent.

He walked over slowly and sat down on the edge of the bed. The mattress sank at once, but she didn’t wake, still sleeping heavily. Only it wasn’t a peaceful sleep. He reached out to brush aside a lock of hair and stared at her face carefully, greedily.

She was thinner, and paler too.

His warm fingers lightly skimmed over her fine features, unwilling to let go... He wanted so badly to be holding her right now.

Just as he was brimming with longing, Aunt Zhang’s voice came softly from the doorway, "Sir, the noodles are ready."

King Jingyao came back to himself. He gave her one more look, then got up lightly and walked out. Aunt Zhang closed the door behind them while scolding, "You’re still thinking about Xiao Yue, and already you can’t help yourself?"

King Jingyao couldn’t help laughing, "What are you imagining?"

Aunt Zhang didn’t believe him; she’d seen his eyes just now, that little gleam of desire.

So she watched him closely as he came out before she relaxed. The two of them walked together to the dining area. King Jingyao sat down, inhaled the aroma of the noodles, and said softly, "No matter how good it smells outside, it can’t compare to a bowl of noodles you make."

Aunt Zhang rubbed her hands and sat down across from him. "There you go again, making this old woman happy. Sir, if you don’t mind me saying it, this habit of yours of coaxing women really needs to change. If your old ways flare up again someday, you’ll only make Madam sad."

King Jingyao took a bite of noodles. "Let me finish my noodles first. I haven’t had a proper meal all day."

As he ate, Aunt Zhang studied him. After a while she said, "You’ve lost quite a bit of weight and look worn out. What is it, a lot going on at the office?"

She added, "If there’s too much work, let that young Mr. Zhou shoulder more of it. Young men in their prime ought to do more."

King Jingyao looked up at her. "Are you saying I’m old?"

"How could you be old? In my eyes you’re still a child." Aunt Zhang spoke from the heart, then lowered her voice, "Madam hasn’t been very happy lately. Shouldn’t you take her to the hospital for a checkup, or think of a way to bring her back home? Leaving her alone here isn’t right. Besides, that Mr. He keeps coming by."

King Jingyao quickly finished half the bowl of noodles, wiped his lips, and casually asked, "What, he comes often?"

"Every other day." Aunt Zhang swallowed. "Sometimes Madam sees him and sometimes she doesn’t, but even when she does they talk for just a few minutes."

King Jingyao sat there without saying a word.

Aunt Zhang cleared away the bowl and said, "Sir, you really should find a way to bring Madam back. If you keep dragging this out, Madam will only be sadder, thinking you don’t care about her. And you’re stuck trying to manage both sides."

She sighed again. "This was your fault, but if there’s still feelings, you should be the one to win her back."

King Jingyao smiled and casually took out a cigarette to light. "Aunt Zhang, you’ve become a relationship expert now?"

"Your health is bad and you still smoke! I should tell the Old Lady and have her straighten you out." Aunt Zhang put on a stern face, snatched the cigarette, and stubbed it out before saying, "It’s late. Find yourself some pajamas, wash up, and get to sleep. The guest room is right across from Madam’s bedroom. And you are not allowed to disturb Madam’s rest; the Old Lady said you’re now a man wearing a crime."

King Jingyao chuckled softly, "In your eyes I’m absolutely beyond redemption now."

"Aren’t you just." Aunt Zhang laughed as well, her tone easing. "Go on now, I’ll make you some calming soup."

King Jingyao got up and went to the guest room. He looked around for a long time but couldn’t find a single decent set of pajamas that would fit. In the end he had to go into Lin Hua’s bedroom and found a bathrobe. Fortunately it was unisex, so he could just about make do.

After a shower, he went to check on her again. He wanted to say a few words, but couldn’t bear to wake her, so in the end he had to give up and return to his own room to lie down.

He really was exhausted. He’d barely lain down for a bit before he fell asleep just like that... He didn’t even get to drink the calming soup Aunt Zhang had made...

Early the next morning, King Jingyao got up at dawn; he had a meeting at eight.

Once he was dressed, he checked the time. It was already seven o’clock.

Aunt Zhang had breakfast laid out for him and called him over, but he thought for a moment and said, "Pack something for me to eat in the car. I’ll go check on Lin Hua."

Aunt Zhang was displeased. "You don’t even eat properly anymore. Look at you now, living like a homeless dog."

"How could it be that miserable, I came to see my wife." Beicheng pushed Aunt Zhang forward. "Go make me a bento, prepare a bit more."

Aunt Zhang muttered under her breath as she left.

Beicheng fastened his cuffs and went to Lin Hua’s bedroom.

She still wasn’t awake, sleeping very soundly.

He went over, stood quietly by the bed and looked at her for a while, then bent down and kissed her on the forehead, saying hoarsely, "Next time then, I’ll come see you next time."

After he finished speaking he walked out. At the door, Aunt Zhang handed the lunchbox to him. "Secretary-General Wang is outside."

He nodded and opened the door to go out.

Sure enough, once out he saw Wang Jingchuan. As soon as Wang Jingchuan saw him, he immediately asked, "How did it go talking with Madam, any sign she’s had a change of heart?"

Beicheng tilted his head and glanced at him. "She went to sleep last night, and she still hasn’t woken up yet."

Wang Jingchuan’s jaw dropped wide...

So they hadn’t even said a single word? Came for nothing?

Beicheng saw what he was thinking and snorted lightly. "How can you call that coming for nothing?"

As he spoke he straightened his clothes. "We still saw each other."

"One-sidedly." Wang Jingchuan added, earning himself a massive eye-roll from his boss.

It wasn’t until they got in the car that Beicheng had time to eat breakfast. Eating as he spoke, he said, "Didn’t expect that He Qi would actually dare to come again."

Secretary-General Wang instantly offered a suggestion. "Find someone to give him a beating?"

He’d just said it casually; who knew Beicheng’s hand paused, and he actually seriously considered it for a moment, then said, "That works too."

Secretary-General Wang’s mouth hung open: he really meant it? He was just talking off the cuff!

But since the boss had said so, he had no choice but to do it.

Find who?

He could only go to Chen Ming.

On the other side, Lin Hua didn’t wake up until nine. These days she slept until she woke naturally, getting much more rest than before. In the past, because Beicheng got up early to go to the General Office, she always got up early to have breakfast with him.

She washed up and came out. As soon as Aunt Zhang saw her she said, "Madam is up."

Lin Hua rubbed her neck and hummed. "I feel like I slept for a long time."

"You did! Madam slept over a dozen hours. Sir came by and you didn’t even know it." Aunt Zhang said on purpose.

On hearing that, Lin Hua sat down and looked up. "He came by? Why didn’t you wake me?"

"Sir saw you sleeping so soundly, he didn’t want to disturb you." As Aunt Zhang bustled about preparing her breakfast, she said, "He’s already gone to the General Office by now, didn’t even have time to eat breakfast! Oh, right, last night he didn’t look so good. I heard there was a bit of a problem with his heart, he stayed in the hospital for four or five hours before he got himself together. Really doesn’t know how to take care of his own body."

Lin Hua looked thoughtful.

Aunt Zhang added, "But Madam doesn’t need to feel sorry for him, he deserves it!"

Lin Hua smiled faintly and started eating breakfast.

Aunt Zhang sat across from her and started nagging again. "This is Sir’s favorite, I deliberately didn’t make it for him. He probably won’t be coming over again anyway."

Lin Hua glanced at her.

Aunt Zhang continued, "If Madam doesn’t like him coming, I’ll just block him."

Lin Hua couldn’t help it and said softly, "You clearly look forward to him coming, and you’re still saying these insincere things. Keep this up and I’ll tell Old Madam and have you transferred back to the old house."

Aunt Zhang immediately wailed to the heavens, "Madam thinks I’m too talkative! What am I supposed to do, oh—my heart’s all for Madam, and yet Madam really doesn’t treat me like one of her own."

Lin Hua really had no way of dealing with this old rascal; this routine was exactly the same as Beicheng’s. She had no choice but to keep eating her breakfast, eating slowly and carefully, while Aunt Zhang, like a face-change performer, fussed over her with great care, as if she wasn’t the one who’d just thrown a tantrum...

Lin Hua knew she meant well, so she didn’t scold her much.

Just like that, another two days passed, and Aunt Zhang felt something was off. Knitting a sweater as she spoke, she said, "How strange, that cat in heat hasn’t shown up these past few days. Did someone catch him and get him neutered?"

Lin Hua couldn’t help laughing and crying. "Aunt Zhang!"

Aunt Zhang gave a light cough. "All right, all right, Mr. He, Mr. He... By the way, Madam, don’t you find it odd? It’s been several days and he still hasn’t come. Is it those few days of the month for him?"

Lin Hua glanced at her again and said nothing.

Just then, the doorbell rang. Aunt Zhang immediately went over to open the door—

She thought it was Beicheng, but when she opened the door she saw it was the very cat they’d just been talking about: He Qi.

He Qi looked a bit miserable, with bandages wrapped around his body and arms, bruises on his face, and his nose red. Leaning against the doorway, he looked at Aunt Zhang and gave a faint smile. "Haven’t been here for a few days. This is for you."

As he spoke, he took out a bouquet of red roses.

Aunt Zhang’s old face flushed at once, her old eyes going wide. She waved her hands repeatedly. "What’s with you, huh? Couldn’t win over Madam so you’ve set your sights on me? Let me tell you, I may not have a husband but I’ve long been through menopause..."

Lin Hua really couldn’t listen anymore.

This Aunt Zhang!

He Qi still gave a charming smile. "It’s not courting, it’s a payoff."

Aunt Zhang’s old face fell; she snatched the flowers. "Should’ve said so earlier! Got me all worked up for nothing; nobody’s chased after me in decades."

Her words sounded harsh, but she still let him in.

Once he was inside, Aunt Zhang found a vase for the flowers and put them in, not being too stingy about it.

Lin Hua looked at He Qi. "With injuries like that, Mr. He counts as a patient. There’s no need to tire yourself out running around."

He Qi lifted his hand to look at his arm and said lightly, "This little bit of injury is nothing! Mr. Wang was kind enough to stop short and not go for my legs. Otherwise it’d be a bit hard to run over here."

Lin Hua frowned. "Why is Mr. He so sure it was Beicheng?"

He Qi’s smile deepened. "In Beicheng, besides the illustrious Mr. Wang, who else would bother to be at odds with me?"

Lin Hua said nothing.

He Qi went on, "I know you don’t believe it in your heart, or even if you do you don’t want to追究 it!"

He patted his pant leg. "Makes sense. I’m just an outsider. Why should Mrs. Wang stick her neck out and seek justice for me?"

Seeing him like this, before Lin Hua could speak, Aunt Zhang chimed in, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "Mr. He knows full well, so why come and tell our Madam then? They say you’d rather tear down ten bridges than break up one marriage, but everything Mr. He’s done has been to sow discord between husband and wife. Our Madam’s thin-skinned, she turned you down once and probably felt too embarrassed to make it any clearer, but this old woman has no such qualms... You’d best give up that idea. You haven’t figured out Madam’s temperament at all— even if things really fell apart with Sir, there’s absolutely no way it would ever be with you, Mr. He."
