Chapter 1247: Chapter 1447: Hah, Am I Really That Uncivilized?
He Qi listened, stayed silent for a long time, then gave a small, soft laugh: "No need to put it so bluntly."
Aunt Zhang saw him beaten up like this yet still joking about himself, and her heart softened a little. She sighed: "You’re someone’s child too. You’re like this now, don’t you think your parents are worried and upset?"
She went on: "All for someone from the past who’s already got nothing to do with you now, you throw yourself into danger, get your face beaten blue and swollen like a pig’s head. If I were your dad or mom, I’d shove you headfirst into the toilet to sober you up. You’re not young anymore, stop having a love-brain."
He Qi froze for a moment.
How is it that the tangled love and hate between him, King Jingyao and Lin Hua, in Aunt Zhang’s eyes, is just a "love-brain"?
He Qi spoke hoarsely: "I’m already past that age."
"Then do the things someone your age ought to be doing." Aunt Zhang spoke clearly and quickly.
He Qi: ...
He used to be the sharpest lawyer, famous across all of Beicheng for defeating countless opponents in court. Yet now he’d lost to an uneducated woman, and the reason he lost was just one word: reason.
Aunt Zhang simply saw through it and pierced straight to the heart.
He said nothing. Aunt Zhang was amused, pressing her lips together in a smile: "Right? I hit the nail on the head, didn’t I! You tell me if this isn’t the truth: something this big happened, you should be thinking of going back and reassuring your parents. Always tangled up in that bit of the past is just tormenting yourself and tormenting others. Tell me, even if you and Madam ended up together, could you really live well? You and Madam both can’t let go of the six years of married life between her and Sir. What’s the point of that?"
After she’d said so much, He Qi reached for his pocket, clearly wanting a cigarette, but remembering Lin Hua was here, he gave up. After a long time he finally spoke: "You’re not entirely right."
At the very least, he still loved Lin Hua now.
Maybe there were other feelings mixed in, but there was still love.
Aunt Zhang saw she couldn’t talk sense into him and couldn’t be bothered to try. Lin Hua had been listening quietly to the side; now she spoke: "He Qi, all of this is just how you feel. It actually has nothing to do with anyone else."
She thought carefully for a while, then added: "Don’t come over anymore. I won’t see you again."
He Qi was surprised and yet not surprised. After a long while he touched the bruises on his face and gave a self-mocking smile: "I overestimated myself, didn’t I?"
Lin Hua looked at him calmly. "No. It’s just over."
And also, she was tired...
All these years, she hadn’t completely forgotten, but most of what she felt was worry and a bit of guilt. In the end, she owed him. Yet it had been her choice back then, and she’d never regretted it. Even now, having ended up like this with King Jingyao, she still didn’t regret the choice she made back then.
Six years of time had really existed.
Xiao Yue was also their child together.
After Lin Hua finished, He Qi made no sound, just sat quietly for a while, then stood up—
He smiled faintly: "I’ll get going."
He didn’t say he would come, nor that he wouldn’t. He just left like that.
Aunt Zhang closed the door and muttered a prayer under her breath. "Finally got him out of here."
Lin Hua gave a faint smile. She didn’t seem to care much; instead, she called King Jingyao. Aunt Zhang’s eyes went wide—
It had been ten days or so, and this was the first time Madam had called Sir. She held her breath and listened quietly.
On the other end, King Jingyao was wildly excited to receive the call!
God, Lin Hua was calling him.
He was in a meeting at the time. When he saw the caller ID, he immediately signaled everyone to be quiet, then answered the phone and said very gently: "You’re up? What made you think of calling me?"
Ha, he was flattered!
Lin Hua was quite calm: "Was it you who had people beat up He Qi?"
King Jingyao chuckled lightly: "How could you think it was me? I wouldn’t bother."
"But aside from you, there’s no one else who’d bother." Lin Hua’s tone stayed very even. "You had him beaten so I’d call you to plead for him, didn’t you? Now I’ve called."
When King Jingyao heard that, he immediately covered the mic and turned to Wang Jingchuan: "You really did it?"
Wang Jingchuan nodded, looking terribly aggrieved.
Wasn’t that what you wanted?
King Jingyao glanced at him: fast hands, fast feet.
Then, when he spoke to Lin Hua again, his face was once more gentle as water: "It’s all a misunderstanding. How could I be that brutish? This is hard to explain over the phone. I’ll come over after work and tell you in person."
Lin Hua pressed her lips together. "Alright, I’ll wait for you."
Those three words were like a shot of adrenaline straight into some switch inside the "old brother"; he was over the moon. After hanging up, his face was all smiles. "Let’s continue the meeting."
Wang Jingchuan was extra cautious, muttering to himself—
Mr. Wang seemed very happy, but why did he have a bad feeling about this?
Madam was not someone easy to deal with, and usually when a woman is willing to be calm, that pretty much never means anything good.
Over there, after Lin Hua hung up, her mood was complicated. She’d thought long and hard before making this decision...
Aunt Zhang had been watching her expression all along and felt something was off. She asked quietly: "Sir is coming over tonight?"
Lin Hua nodded and hummed: "Yes, he’s coming tonight to talk about something."
Aunt Zhang’s heart sank further, her voice dragging slow: "How about we invite Old Madam to come over for dinner too? It’s been a long time since you’ve all met. We can bring Xiao Yue as well, make it lively as a family."
Lin Hua looked at her and smiled. "I know what you’re thinking. No need."
With that, she went to change her clothes: "I’m going out for a walk. It’s a bit stuffy at home."
Aunt Zhang’s mouth fell open, and after a long while she stammered: "No... Madam, I’ll go with you."
"I want to be alone for a bit," Lin Hua said softly.
