When Meng Zhi opened her eyes again, she found herself lying in a mass grave.

The first thing she saw was the gloomy sky. Dark clouds covered everything, leaving not even a trace of sunlight behind.

Her eyes slowly became moist. She stared at the sky as though she were questioning the gods themselves, questioning the deity hidden somewhere beyond those clouds.

Why? Why had her life been so painful? Why had every good thing seemed to slip away from her? Why had her entire life been filled with nothing but negativity?

A tear slowly rolled down the corner of her eye. Meng Zhi closed her eyes.

’Maybe death would be great.’

Perhaps death would be the only way for her to escape all of this.

But soon, she realized that it was nothing more than wishful thinking. Rain began to pour from the sky. Cold water drenched her already broken body.

Her entire body slowly became numb from the cold. Even her tears froze at the corners of her eyes. Her teeth chattered uncontrollably as the freezing wind swept across the mass grave.

"Blanket..."

Her voice was barely audible. "Someone... give me a blanket..."

But there was no one to answer her. She was in a mass grave.

The only things accompanying her were the cold wind, the rain, and the stench of rotting corpses and exposed skeletons scattered nearby.

Meng Zhi slowly closed her eyes.

’Forget it. Let me die. Let me reincarnate into someone lovable like a cat or a dog? Or let me become a stone, a tree, or the ground itself. Anything is fine. Just never let me become human again.’

She waited and waited, yet nothing happened. Instead, her body only suffered more. She was burning with fever despite being drenched by the freezing rain.

There were countless injuries scattered across her body. Her tongue was bleeding. Several of her teeth had shattered, leaving her mouth filled with the metallic taste of blood.

Her legs felt as though they had been completely crushed. She couldn’t even move them. She simply lay there, waiting for death.

Then a voice began echoing inside her mind.

’Why me? Why weren’t the people who hurt you punished by the gods? If gods really exist, why did they never take your side? Why did they never send anyone to rescue you?’

Meng Zhi clenched her fist. ’So be it. Let me return to nature and decompose here.’

The thought gave her a strange sense of peace. But the process of dying was far more painful than she had imagined.

Her consciousness slowly faded. Her breathing became weaker.

And then, something changed. She didn’t know how much time had passed. Perhaps hours or an entire night.

But gradually, she felt something spreading through her body. Her bones began to change; her damaged organs seemed to repair themselves.

By the time she opened her eyes the next morning, the sky was still gloomy. Yet her body felt completely different.

The exhaustion was gone, and the pain had disappeared. Slowly, stiffly, Meng Zhi pushed herself up.

She stared at her hands; they were paler than before. Her body, which should have been completely broken, now felt strangely powerful.

She stared at herself in confusion. ’Was this heaven’s gift to me?’

A faint smile appeared on her face. "Thank you..."

The moment she spoke, a strange growl escaped her throat. "Grrr..."

Meng Zhi froze, her eyes filled with confusion. "What?"

Another growl came from her mouth. "Grrrr..."

She touched her throat in confusion. Had she reincarnated as some kind of animal? But if she had, why did she still have human hands?

She stumbled around the mass grave, searching for anything that could reflect her appearance. Eventually, she noticed a small outhouse nearby.

She slowly walked toward it. An old man was sleeping inside. Meng Zhi approached the door and knocked.

’Knock. Knock.’

The old man stirred. "Wait up..."

His irritated voice came from inside. "It’s still early. Come back at ten."

Meng Zhi stared blankly at the door. She didn’t understand why, but something inside her seemed to accept his words. She obediently squatted down beside the door.

Her mind felt strangely sluggish. Even thinking seemed to require effort. So she simply waited.

Finally, ten o’clock arrived. Inside the small outhouse, the old man suddenly frowned. Something smelled rotten.

He opened his eyes and rubbed his nose. "Who brought a body here this early? Are they stupid or what?"

Then another thought occurred to him. "Or is it those same crime bosses who dumped a body here yesterday?"

The old man muttered angrily as he climbed out of bed.

The booth was tiny. There was barely enough room for a chair and a small bed that extended almost all the way to the door.

A tiny makeshift bathroom occupied one corner. A mirror hung on the wall beside a calendar and an old clock. The old man yawned as he opened the door.

Then he froze. Standing outside was a woman. No... it wasn’t a woman anymore. The body that had been dumped here ten months ago had become something horrifying.

Her skin was pale and rotten. Parts of her flesh had already decayed. Her hair was tangled and dirty, and her face was ghastly.

She looked like a corpse that had somehow learned to stand. The old man’s face turned white. "Ghost!"

He immediately grabbed the electric baton beside the door. Without thinking, he swung it toward Meng Zhi.

Meng Zhi sensed movement. She turned around, but it was already too late.

The electric baton struck her body. A powerful current surged through her. Her entire body convulsed.

The old man screamed. Meng Zhi instinctively reacted. She reached out and shoved him.

BANG! The old man’s body flew backward. His head struck the ground. Blood immediately began pooling beneath him.

Meng Zhi flinched instinctively and backed away in fear.

’I... killed him?’

For several seconds, she couldn’t even breathe. Then panic overwhelmed her. She turned around and tried to run. But the open door suddenly caught her attention.
