Cannon Fodder In Apocalypse: I Rule With Sanctuary Evolution System
Chapter 77: LinaA mirror was hanging directly opposite it. And in that mirror, she saw herself. What looked back at her was a grotesque figure that looked like a... zombie.
A shriek escaped her throat. "AAAAHHHH!"
Except it wasn’t a human scream. It was a terrifying growl. Meng Zhi stumbled backward. "No..."
Another growl came out. "No... no..."
She desperately tried to speak. But all that escaped her mouth was a series of hoarse snarls. Her eyes slowly filled with tears.
She looked toward the sky.
"Why?! Why, Heaven?! I was already miserable as a human! Why did you have to make me undead?! What is going on?!"
But no answer came. The sky remained silent. Meng Zhi wandered through the city in a daze.
It didn’t take long for the cruel reality to completely crush whatever hope remained inside her. She had become a zombie.
An existence hated by humanity. An existence that humans would kill without hesitation. An existence that was looked down upon even more than the human she had hated being.
Meng Zhi suddenly laughed. At first, it was only a faint, bitter chuckle, then it became louder. "Hahaha..."
She covered her face. It was ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.
She had wished never to become human again. And the heavens had granted her wish, just not in the way she had imagined.
For the first few months, Meng Zhi didn’t even know how to survive.
She didn’t know what zombies ate. She didn’t understand her own body. She didn’t know why she sometimes felt an overwhelming urge to attack humans.
Whenever she saw survivors, she instinctively hid.
Subconsciously, Meng Zhi didn’t want to hurt humans.
All she ever felt from humans was cruelty, and after everything she had experienced in her previous life, she didn’t exactly have much affection for humanity.
But she hadn’t reached the point where she wanted to kill innocent people. So she survived on her own.
She avoided humans whenever possible and quietly wandered through the ruined cities, occasionally absorbing the zombie crystals she found.
Then, one day, she met a little zombie girl. "My name is Lina."
That was the first thing the little girl told her. When Meng Zhi found her, Lina was being abandoned by her own father.
Meng Zhi had personally witnessed what happened.
Lina’s mother had desperately tried to protect her. "Don’t kill Lina!"
She repeatedly begged the man. "She may have become a zombie, but she still has her intelligence! Just let her go!"
But Lina’s father was terrified. In this world, women might still have value, but no one valued another person’s life more than their own.
The man didn’t hesitate and rushed toward Lina. His intention was obvious. He wanted to kill his own daughter before she could hurt his wife.
But before he could reach Lina... Bang! Lina’s mother threw herself between them. The attack struck her instead, and she collapsed.
Dead. For a moment, Meng Zhi froze. A low growl escaped her throat. Her eyes flashed with hatred as she stared at Lina’s father.
The man noticed her gaze. He turned around. The moment he saw Meng Zhi, his face paled.
During the past few months, Meng Zhi had absorbed several random zombie crystals she had found.
Although she was still roughly as weak as a Level Two zombie, the accumulation of those crystals had strengthened her body considerably.
Her appearance had also changed. She looked far more like a powerful zombie than an ordinary one. The man immediately turned and ran.
Meng Zhi didn’t chase him; instead, she heard crying. She turned around. Lina was crying beside her mother’s body.
Meng Zhi stared at her. This was the first time she had encountered another zombie who was like her. A zombie who could feel emotions. A zombie who could cry.
A zombie who could feel grief after losing someone.
Meng Zhi slowly approached. Lina immediately backed away. She pulled her mother’s body behind herself and spread her arms protectively.
"Who are you?"
Her voice trembled. "Leave me and my mother alone! We aren’t tasty!"
Meng Zhi stopped. She pointed toward Lina’s mother. Then she pointed at herself.
Finally, she pointed at her own teeth. Lina stared at her for several seconds. Then she seemed to understand. She slowly shook her head.
"Let my mother die as a human."
Her voice became surprisingly calm. "I’ll bury her."
Then Lina looked at Meng Zhi. "You can understand emotions too, can’t you? So you’re not like the other zombies? The mindless ones?"
Meng Zhi nodded again, her head almost looking like it would fall off any second.
Lina slowly relaxed. The tension disappeared from her shoulders. She knelt beside her mother. She wasn’t very old.
Perhaps around ten years old. She was thin and frail, wearing a beautiful bubblegum-colored frock with a pastel-pink jacket.
Her hair was tied into two neat ponytails. She would have looked incredibly cute if not for the strange, bulging veins running across her pale face and body.
Meng Zhi stared at her. For some reason, she didn’t leave. She simply stayed beside the little girl.
That night, Meng Zhi watched Lina cry. Lina was a zombie and couldn’t shed tears anymore. Instead, she let out soft, broken howls.
Those sounds were enough to keep the nearby zombies away. Meng Zhi didn’t know what to do.
After searching around for a while, she eventually found a piece of tissue and slowly pushed it toward Lina.
Lina stared at it. Then she looked at Meng Zhi. "Thank you."
Meng Zhi froze. For the first time in her entire existence, someone didn’t resist her. Someone accepted her kindness. And that thank-you wasn’t fake.
Meng Zhi remained cautious. But she didn’t leave. She simply wanted to stay with this little girl.
For some reason, she felt that Lina was different.
Perhaps because she was intelligent. Perhaps because she understood her. Or perhaps because, for the first time since becoming a zombie, Meng Zhi didn’t feel alone.
The next morning, Lina personally carried her mother’s belongings and prepared to bury her. Meng Zhi helped her.
