Together, they carried the body to a beautiful spot away from the ruined city. As they walked, Lina kept talking.

"Do you think we’ll ever become human again?"

Meng Zhi tilted her head.

"Should I really not turn my mother into a zombie?"

Lina looked at her mother’s body. "How long would she remain a zombie if I did? I just don’t want to see her suffer anymore. You know, I had a really bad childhood."

Meng Zhi tilted her head again. Lina noticed the movement and suddenly chuckled. "You really are like a child. You’re even more childish than me."

Then she thought for a moment. "How about this? I’ll tell you my story, and you can acknowledge me as your big sister."

Meng Zhi immediately shook her head. "Me... big sister!"

Lina’s eyes widened. "You can speak?!"

Meng Zhi nodded. Lina burst into laughter. "Then why were you growling all this time?"

She wiped the corner of her eye. "I almost thought you were a little zombie who hadn’t finished transforming!"

Meng Zhi stared at her silently. Lina happily grabbed her hand.

"Alright, Sister Meng Zhi. I’ll tell you everything I know about zombies."

She looked unusually serious. "I haven’t read any novels, but I’ve watched lots of animations and zombie movies."

Meng Zhi’s expression became strange. "First, we need to stay away from humans."

Lina raised one finger. "They won’t consider us their friends anymore."

She raised another. "We can wait until humans realise that we aren’t necessarily a threat."

Then she raised a third. "Our first task should be finding a safe place where we can survive by absorbing zombie crystals."

She smiled. "Eventually, when we become strong enough to communicate with humans properly, they’ll realise we’re an asset to humanity."

Her eyes sparkled. "Then they won’t eliminate us. They might even praise us for our bravery!"

Meng Zhi lowered her gaze, her eyes filled with icy hatred as she spat. "They won’t."

Lina blinked.

"They lie." Meng Zhi’s voice was cold. "They betray. They’re hateful."

Lina quietly looked at her. She seemed to understand that Meng Zhi wasn’t simply talking about humans in general.

Something had happened to her.

"Sister Meng Zhi..."

Lina sighed. "Many bad things must have happened to you."

Meng Zhi remained silent.

"I can see it from the way you talk." Lina smiled gently. "But trust me. As long as we remain kind, the world will eventually return that kindness to us."

Meng Zhi looked at her. For some reason, Lina’s words reminded her of her father.

A bitter resentment suddenly rose inside her. She shook her head.

"You naive."

Lina sighed as she scratched her cheeks. "You know what? I don’t think I can convince you."

She pointed toward the grave. "Let’s just bury my mother first."

Meng Zhi nodded. Together, they buried Lina’s mother. They remained beside the grave for a long time.

Neither of them spoke. Eventually, Lina stood up. "Let’s go home."

She led Meng Zhi back to her previous home. It was an abandoned villa that had somehow remained mostly intact.

From that day onwards, Meng Zhi and Lina began living together.

Those days became perhaps the most peaceful period of Meng Zhi’s entire existence.

For the first time, she felt as though she were living again.

Lina was endlessly energetic. Every day, the little girl found some new way to make Meng Zhi laugh.

Sometimes she would imitate humans. Sometimes she would tell ridiculous stories.

Sometimes she would complain about being hungry even though zombies didn’t actually need ordinary food anymore.

Even though she was only 10, she had seen and experienced a lot. Her mother, after conceiving her, became weak to the point that fertility became an issue.

However, her mother was still happy. With Lina, she could still enjoy a lot of benefits without taking any husbands.

So for her, Lina was more important to her. Lina’s father too was good at the beginning until he won a lottery and eventually started to pursue other women named Lizzy.

His mother even wanted to divorce her father, but then the apocalypse descended.

Lina has seen a lot from their marriage and learned to hide her emotions.

So even when her father killed her mother... she remained calm...

Meng Zhi even asked Lina if she didn’t feel any resentment or didn’t want to kill him.

Lina only smiled and replied, "I won’t make him my main goal. When I transform into a human again, I will expose him myself. If luck had it... he might turn into a zombie one day."

From her, Meng Zhi understood why she didn’t rush for revenge... maybe her world never revolved around negative emotions.

And, most importantly, Lina taught Meng Zhi how to plant. "Look!"

Lina crouched beside a small patch of soil. "You need to put the seed in like this."

Meng Zhi carefully copied her. "Then cover it."

Meng Zhi covered the seed.

"And finally..." Lina patted the soil twice. "We wait."

Meng Zhi stared at the ground. "That’s it?"

"That’s it." Lina smiled proudly. "You see? Even zombies can grow plants."

Meng Zhi looked at the tiny patch of soil. For some reason, she smiled.

Lina also taught Meng Zhi how to scavenge for zombie crystals.

She patiently explained which zombies were worth hunting, which areas were dangerous, and how to search the corpses without attracting unnecessary attention.

Sometimes, after returning from their scavenging trips, Lina would sit beside Meng Zhi and show her various videos from social media platforms.

Animals, cooking, singing, and evening dancing. Meng Zhi didn’t understand why humans had spent so much time making such strange things.

Before, she was too busy here in life and didn’t have a phone, and after her marriage, all her contact with the outside world was cut off...

So to her, all of these were alien things. But eventually, she started to understand it and enjoy it. She slowly began to realise that perhaps this world wasn’t entirely bad.

At least she had someone who accepted her. Lina. To Meng Zhi, Lina was like sunlight.
