She was the one small, warm thing that had appeared in her otherwise miserable existence. And Meng Zhi wanted to protect that light.

Because of that, she became extremely careful.

Lina noticed Meng Zhi trying to put distance between them and confront her. When she learned about Meng Zhi’s entire story, she was silent before saying,

"Sister Zhi, they were wrong. You are not jinx; you are an amazing person! I will protect you from now on. Don’t worry, soon no one will call you a jinx. Everyone will respect you!"

Meng Zhi’s dead heart seemed to have become alive at that moment, and suddenly the word love flashed in her mind.

The next year was the absolute loveliest year of her life. She would wake up, cook mutated animal meat for Lina, and then Lina would wash the dishes. They would then pray to the god.

Lina nagged her to her, "Sister Meng Zhi, god is impartial, and our parents! We should respect him. He will never wrong."

Meng Zhi thought it was bullshit. She had stopped believing in gods long ago. But for Lina’s sake... she decided to let go of her bitterness and believe in him again.

After a quick warm exercise, they would hunt for zombie crystals, and at night they would sneak to amusement parks... or a water park.

................

One day, while Lina and Meng Zhi were away from the villa, a tall, well-built man stumbled into the area. He had an ordinary-looking face, but his entire body was covered in injuries.

Blood soaked through his clothes; his breathing was weak. He barely managed to drag himself toward the villa before collapsing onto the ground.

"God... Just kill me."

He closed his eyes. "Please..."

He had already drunk some infected water before arriving here. He was waiting for the infection to take effect. He had even considered letting a zombie bite him.

But he knew that if he deliberately approached one, the zombie might simply tear him apart before the infection could transform him.

So he could only lie there. If he became a zombie, he would live. If he died, he would finally be free. Either outcome was acceptable to him.

Eventually, exhaustion overwhelmed him. He fell asleep. Not long afterward, Lina and Meng Zhi returned.

The moment Lina noticed the human lying outside their villa, her eyes widened. "A human?"

She immediately hurried toward him. "He’s heavily injured! Oh my God, is he going to die?"

She turned toward Meng Zhi. "Sister Meng Zhi, what should we do?"

Meng Zhi immediately shook her head. Her expression became alert. She didn’t care whether the man lived or died. What mattered was Lina.

She didn’t want this injured human to suddenly attack her. Lina noticed her expression and gently patted her shoulder. "Don’t worry. He won’t be a bother to us."

Their conversation seemed to wake the man. His eyelids slowly opened. The first thing he saw was Lina and then Meng Zhi. Two zombies.

His heart nearly stopped. "Zombies..."

His body instinctively tensed. But then, a strange sensation suddenly spread throughout his body. His fingers began twitching, his heartbeat slowed, his vision became strangely clear, and he looked down at his hand.

The transformation was unmistakable. For several seconds, he simply stared. Then he started laughing. "Hahaha!"

His laughter grew louder. "I became a zombie!"

He looked at Lina and Meng Zhi with almost childlike excitement. "I finally became a zombie!"

Lina stared at him in confusion. "Why is he happy? Shouldn’t he be crying because he became a zombie?"

Meng Zhi remained silent. But she understood. Sometimes, being a zombie was better than being human. She knew that better than anyone.

After all, she had been treated better as a zombie than she had ever been treated as a human. The man continued laughing for a while before slowly getting to his feet.

He tried taking a few steps. Then his body suddenly began twitching violently. His muscles tightened. His entire body convulsed. Lina’s expression immediately changed.

"Sister! He’s probably transitioning between death and becoming a zombie."

She remembered the nearby Uncle Liu, who had experienced something similar.

Meng Zhi simply nodded; she wasn’t particularly worried. Another zombie wasn’t exactly a major concern.

But Lina was different. She immediately took out all the zombie crystals she had collected. "Here."

She handed them to the man. "If you absorb these, you’ll become stable."

The man looked at the crystals. His hands trembled as he took them. Then he began absorbing them. The strange energy spread throughout his body.

His twitching gradually stopped. Finally, his body became calm. "Thank you."

Lina smiled. "No problem."

For the next few days, the man stayed with them. His name was Tong Zhu.

He was afraid that his transformation wasn’t complete and that he might die after becoming a zombie. So he remained beside them, observing everything they did.

Slowly, he learned their habits and copied them except for praying to the gods. The strange thing was that he adapted surprisingly quickly.

A week passed. One evening, Tong Zhu suddenly looked at Lina and Meng Zhi. "I have something to say."

Lina and Meng Zhi looked at him seriously. Tong Zhu took a deep breath. "I want to rule this world. I want to completely annihilate humanity from this earth."

Lina’s smile disappeared. "I’ll turn every human into a zombie. And then I’ll rule them. Are you in?"

Lina immediately frowned. "Sorry, Mister. We don’t plan to rule the world."

Tong Zhu raised an eyebrow.

"We plan to eventually become allies with humans." Her voice became firm. "So if you have plans like that, please leave."

Tong Zhu wasn’t offended. Instead, he looked toward Meng Zhi. "Consider my proposal."

His expression was strangely calm. "It will always remain open to both of you. No one else. Because you two helped me."

Lina pouted. "Why are you so against humanity anyway?"

Tong Zhu didn’t answer. He simply lowered his gaze. Meng Zhi stared at him for a moment before calmly saying,

"Leave."

Tong Zhu suddenly laughed. "Hahaha..."

He looked at Meng Zhi with an amused expression. "I can see it. You’re just as dark as me."

Meng Zhi remained silent.

"But you’re still desperately trying to hold on to your last shred of humanity."

Tong Zhu smiled.

"Fine. Keep holding on to it. But the day everything becomes unbearable... Come to me. I’ll make you a Zombie King."
