In a training gym somewhere in Hongsheng District, Su Wei was repeatedly striking a human-shaped dummy, his upper body bare.
Each strike engaged all the muscles in his body, sending beads of sweat flying. The blows looked immensely powerful, yet they left no damage on the dummy’s surface. This required exceptionally meticulous control over Emitting Force.
He had been on standby ever since arriving in Central City, but he still received a salary every month.
It wasn’t a huge sum, but it was enough for him to get by in Central City. Getting paid without having to work was something he previously wouldn’t have even dared to imagine.
Aside from covering his essential living and training expenses, he sent all the remaining money to the families of his former teammates who had been maimed or killed in action.
In his eyes, Central City was a training paradise. Not only could he find various martial arts forums, but he also didn’t have to constantly worry about the Activity Index, let alone guard against the ever-present, hostile adversaries.
Of course, this wasn’t because public safety in Central City was perfect. Rather, as a Third Limit Fighter, ordinary people simply posed no real threat to him.
Besides, the dangers in Central City were nothing compared to the Merging Land. At night in the Merging Land, everyone had to shelter inside the settlement cities; no one dared to venture out. But he could go out whenever and wherever he pleased.
As he was absorbed in his training, his Realm Token suddenly rang. He stopped immediately, glanced at it, and answered, "Captain?"
Chen Chuan’s voice came through. "Team Member Su, I need to see you."
Su Wei’s expression immediately turned serious. "Where should we meet?" he asked.
A location then appeared on his Realm Token.
"We’ll meet here."
Su Wei took a look. The location was also in Hongsheng District, and the meeting was set for before eleven o’clock. He had a little over an hour, and it wasn’t far from his current location.
He said, "I’ll head over right away."
After ending the call, he took a quick shower, changed into a set of clean clothes, and left to take the tram. Roughly twenty minutes later, he arrived at the designated location.
He arrived to find a long-abandoned commercial district. There were no familiar, dazzling neon lights nearby—only walls covered in graffiti, overgrown weeds, a few scattered vagrants, and muttering eccentrics wandering about. Occasionally, a cat or dog would dart past.
As he was looking around, a voice sounded from his Realm Token. "Team Member Su, come over here."
Su Wei glanced in the direction his Realm Token indicated. It was a high-rise that had been abandoned halfway through construction and looked quite old. He walked across a gravel-strewn path, entered the structure, glanced upward, and then followed the bare stairwell up to the roof.
Chen Chuan was waiting for him. "Team Member Su," he said, "surveillance in Central City has gotten tight recently. Every move is being observed. Besides the government, the major corporations are also keeping a close eye on Fighters. It’s more convenient to talk here."
Su Wei wasn’t a native of Central City, so he wasn’t particularly sensitive to its political climate. But just from those words, he could tell something was afoot.
He thought back and recalled that city patrols had indeed been conducting frequent checks in his apartment building lately. He remembered it hadn’t been like that when he first came to Central City.
He said in a serious tone, "Captain, please give me your orders."
Chen Chuan didn’t get straight to the point. Instead, he looked Su Wei over and said, "Come to think of it, since recruiting you to the team, Team Member Su, I haven’t had a chance to test your abilities. I’d like to see them for myself today."
"Alright!"
Su Wei agreed, his expression completely serious. Although Chen Chuan was younger than him, he had been able to determine the number of enemies, their formation, and their combat methods based solely on the Realm Token that day. His strength was undoubtedly immense.
Furthermore, since Chen Chuan’s arrival, Su Wei had felt an oppressive aura from him that he couldn’t ignore. It made him involuntarily tense his muscles, a clear sign that Chen Chuan’s abilities were superior to his.
The rooftop was spacious, and with the building completely deserted, he could fight without holding back.
He backed away, watching Chen Chuan. Seeing that his captain had no intention of attacking first, he stomped his foot and lunged forward. The rooftop shuddered violently, and a large ring of cracks instantly spread out from where his foot had landed.
The moment he was in range, he threw a punch.
Chen Chuan stood his ground, not moving an inch. He simply raised an arm and blocked, perfectly catching the fist.
Su Wei was airborne, his entire body suspended in a leap. The instant they made contact, the Power he had held in reserve suddenly erupted from his body.
It was a Second Stage Force technique.
This method of attack was widely known, but few could execute it well. He was one of the masters of the technique.
Of course, his goal wasn’t to knock down Chen Chuan in one blow. He knew the rooftop couldn’t withstand their combined strength. This strike would surely shatter the ground beneath Chen Chuan’s feet. If his captain lost his balance, even if it wasn’t enough for a defeat, it would create a better opening to attack.
But to his astonishment, Chen Chuan took the full brunt of the force without so much as swaying. Not only that, but there was no reaction at all from the rooftop beneath his feet.
He immediately realized that Chen Chuan’s Mutated Organization had neutralized the force and redirected it elsewhere. It was an exceptionally advanced technique.
Seeing his first strike fail, he followed up with a kick in mid-air before he even landed. The transition from the punch was seamless, showcasing his body’s incredible coordination.
Chen Chuan simply swatted a hand out, once again deflecting the kick.
Su Wei finally landed, then charged forward again without hesitation, unleashing a ferocious assault.
Chen Chuan didn’t go on the offensive. He remained rooted to the spot, using only one hand to nullify the attacks.
The longer Su Wei fought, the more alarmed he became, but he was also filled with admiration. To be able to do this proved that Chen Chuan’s speed and power were both far superior to his, which was why he could handle the assault with such ease.
After dozens more fruitless attacks, he knew there was no point in continuing like this. He retreated and said, "Captain, this is the extent of my skill empty-handed. I’m going to use my weapon now."
Chen Chuan nodded. "Alright, Team Member Su. Feel free."
Su Wei drew a dagger from behind his waist. He was actually most proficient with a pair of Short Spears, but he didn’t have a Weapon Permit and couldn’t carry such conspicuous weapons on the street, so he didn’t have them with him today. A dagger would have to suffice.
He took a moment to adjust his stance, then suddenly lunged forward, stabbing with the dagger.
Chen Chuan didn’t allow the dagger to reach him. This time, he used both hands to intercept and parry the blade. He was no longer purely on the defensive. As he blocked the dagger with unerring accuracy, he would release a burst of Power that penetrated back into Su Wei’s body.
Su Wei’s assault was severely hampered by this reverberating Power. He couldn’t connect his moves, rendering his attacks much less of a threat.
Realizing a direct confrontation was futile, he immediately changed his style. His attack patterns became more deceptive, and he began using feints that concealed deadly intent. But not a single one worked.
Although Chen Chuan wasn’t deliberately using his Spiritual Power, his Domain radiated outward naturally, allowing him to clearly perceive any fluctuations within it. As a result, no matter what feints Su Wei attempted, they were laid completely bare, and none of them succeeded.
Faced with this predicament, Su Wei didn’t give up. He suddenly leaped backward, then stomped down hard. A crack shot from under his foot toward where Chen Chuan stood as the rooftop began to give way and collapse.
Chen Chuan saw this and leaped back to retreat. But just as he was airborne, Su Wei suddenly hurled the dagger from his hand. Using the force from his stomp, he launched himself into the air, flipped, and threw a second, previously hidden dagger. This second blade actually arrived in front of Chen Chuan before the first.
Chen Chuan saw that this dagger was incredibly fast and possessed immense piercing power. Although he could have withstood the blow directly, this was just a spar; there was no need. So, he twisted his body to the side to dodge it.
However, just as he made that move, the dagger that had been lagging behind suddenly accelerated forward!
Oh?
Chen Chuan understood at once. Su Wei had infused the second dagger with Second Stage Force, creating a combined feint-and-strike technique. And there was more. A figure flashed into view as Su Wei himself charged in right behind the dagger, launching a kick toward him.
Chen Chuan still hadn’t landed. His gaze remained calm as he watched the dagger draw closer. It seemed that in the next moment, the weapon would pierce him between the eyes.
Su Wei was involuntarily startled. Instead of continuing his kick toward Chen Chuan, he abruptly angled his leg upward and, with a sharp CRACK, kicked the dagger away. The sudden change in motion threw him off balance, and with no footing beneath him, he began to fall.
Just then, a hand reached down from above, firmly grasping his wrist and leaving him dangling in mid-air. A series of loud RUMBLES echoed from below as several floors were smashed through in succession, leaving a gaping hole in the building.
He looked up to see Chen Chuan standing on the rooftop railing, his gaze fixed on him. With a light tug, Chen Chuan pulled him back onto the roof.
Su Wei used the momentum to leap up and land beside Chen Chuan. He thought for a moment, then sighed. "It seems that last move of mine was unnecessary. The captain didn’t need my help."
Chen Chuan smiled. "It was just an instinctual reaction, Team Member Su."
’I have a general understanding of Su Wei’s strength now,’ Chen Chuan thought. ’Compared to Qin Qingque and Yuan Qiuyuan, his fundamentals aren’t as solid. This probably stems from the unique environment of the Merging Land. However, he is incredibly experienced. In a real fight to the death, those two might not necessarily be able to overpower him.’
’After all, he’s someone who grew up in the Merging Land. The incapable would have been eliminated long ago.’
’It’s worth mentioning that, not counting his last instinctual action, Su Wei never once tried to circle around and attack my back, even though I stood still the whole time. On one hand, he probably knew it would be useless; on the other, it was likely a matter of character.’
’But that integrity is likely reserved for his teammates. I trust he wouldn’t be so inflexible when facing an enemy.’
’This gave him a much better understanding of his new teammate. He was a man with his own principles, but not one who was incapable of adapting.’
He gazed out past the edge of the rooftop, toward the distant city districts. "Team Member Su," he said, "a situation is developing in Central City. We could be assigned a mission at any time. When that happens, I will need your assistance."
Having done nothing for so long had left Su Wei feeling unsettled. Now, hearing an order, his heart finally settled. He raised his hand in a somewhat stiff salute and said in a firm voice, "Yes, Captain!"
