Chapter 565 - 295: The Squad

After their conversation on the rooftop, Su Wei got into the Gard Car with Chen Chuan.

He didn’t ask where they were going or what they would be doing. During his self-training over the past few days, he had read some military regulation manuals. He understood that this was different from the commissioned teams in the Merging Land. In the military, one had to strictly obey the orders of superiors. When on a mission, you did whatever the team leader said, no questions asked.

Chen Chuan drove out of Hongsheng District and back into Wuding District. He stopped at a station with an underground passage, showed his identification, and then led Su Wei inside.

In the past few days, Counselor Pei had contacted him again. He told Chen Chuan that the Defense Department had detected significant new disturbances at the unrepaired breach in the World Ring, coinciding with the changes in the Fumu’s condition. The Defense Department was currently dispatching more forces there.

This meant the situation in Central City could become even more tense. If the Fumu began to split and reproduce, the Defense Department would have a mission for him, so he was to be ready and on standby at all times.

Chen Chuan acknowledged the orders. He knew full well that until one’s personal strength reached a certain level, the power of a team was still very useful. That was why he had recalled Su Wei.

Besides him, Chen Chuan had also submitted a request to his superiors to have Qin Qingque and Yuan Qiuyuan, who were currently stationed in the Merging Land, transferred over.

This was certainly a crisis, but it was also an opportunity to earn merit.

While he was driving over, Qin and Yuan had already sent him a message, saying they were about to arrive in Central City.

They took an elevator down to a deserted station platform. After waiting for only a few minutes, he saw Yuan Qiuyuan and Qin Qingque walking over from the other end of the tunnel, carrying their packs.

"Captain!"

Upon seeing Chen Chuan, Yuan Qiuyuan quickened his pace, looking exceptionally excited.

"Good to see you, Captain." Qin Qingque came forward and gave a standard-posture salute.

Yuan Qiuyuan quickly followed suit with a salute of his own.

Chen Chuan returned the salute.

Then, Yuan and Qin’s eyes fell on Su Wei, who was standing behind him.

Chen Chuan said, "Let me introduce you. This is Su Wei. From now on, he will be joining our team for operations in the Merging Land. If there’s a major operation from above, the three of you will each be responsible for leading a small squad."

"Whoa, the Captain recruited you personally? Not bad. Team Member Su, when are we going to have a spar?" Yuan Qiuyuan was not holding back with the new team member.

Su Wei glanced at Chen Chuan. Seeing no objection, he said seriously, "Any time."

"It’s a date, then."

Yuan Qiuyuan looked at Chen Chuan again, rubbing his hands together. "Captain, ever since you left, we’ve been waiting for you to call us! Right, Executioner Qin?"

Qin Qingque nodded.

Chen Chuan said, "Follow me for now. I’ll explain the details when we get there." He turned and led the way, taking the three of them out of the station and toward the parked Gard Car.

Seeing the car, Qin Qingque said, "Captain, let me drive."

Chen Chuan asked, "Have you been to Jibei Dao Central City before?"

Qin Qingque replied, "I’ve been here once before. Just send me the location, Captain."

Chen Chuan knew she was a fast and steady driver, so he sent her the location of his residence in Wuding District. He then took the front passenger seat, while Su Wei and Yuan Qiuyuan sat in the back.

After the car started, Yuan Qiuyuan said from the back, "Captain, we haven’t been slacking off these past few days. Besides our guard duties during the day, we’ve been training hard in our spare time, all so we can keep up with you."

He then leaned forward a bit and said, "Captain, I heard there might be a big show this time?"

Without turning around, Chen Chuan said, "Oh? What have you heard?"

"Well, when Counselor Pei arranged for us to come over, he said the situation in Central City was extremely dire and that you needed us, Captain. But he didn’t reveal any specifics, just said we’d find out when we met up with you. Hey, you don’t think we’ll be facing an opponent like the Iron Demon again, do you?"

Chen Chuan looked at the road ahead and said slowly, "More than that. It’s hard to say what exactly we’ll be facing."

Yuan Qiuyuan caught something different in his tone. His expression grew serious, and he leaned back in his seat. Deep in his eyes, however, was a look of eagerness.

Su Wei sat silently in the back seat the whole way, quietly observing his two new teammates.

In less than a quarter of an hour, the car drove into Chen Chuan’s large residence in Wuding District. After parking outside, he led the three into the living room and went to open the refrigerator.

He said, "Help yourselves to whatever you want to drink."

He himself went to pick up a tea caddy. Seeing this, Qin Qingque proactively came over, took it from him, and started to prepare tea.

Once everyone was seated, Chen Chuan explained the implications of the Fumu splitting and reproducing, as well as the situations they might face next.

"From the sounds of it, Captain, this is going to be a huge scene."

Yuan Qiuyuan couldn’t help but get excited. He could imagine that in a situation like this, there would be opportunities to earn merit everywhere.

’Sure enough, following the Captain is always rewarding.’

Chen Chuan continued, "Once the Fumu splits—setting aside the capture and disposal of the fragments—the two worlds will be pulled closer together, which will inevitably cause numerous Rifts to appear."

"Central City has experience dealing with this, but that was under the premise that the World Ring was stable. Now that there’s a breach, the situation is unpredictable. It’s especially likely that things from the Merging Land will leak through from the other side."

"Right now, even the higher-ups probably can’t make an accurate assessment of what will happen. That’s why there are no specific missions assigned yet. But if we encounter anything, it will be extremely dangerous. So, while cooperating with the Central City Government’s operations, I want you to prioritize your own safety. Self-preservation is rule number one."

Qin, Yuan, and Su all nodded, their expressions turning serious.

All three of them had a certain understanding of the Merging Land and knew just how troublesome the things from there could be.

In Chen Chuan’s view, the foreign Fighters would actually be a minor issue.

Especially those Fighters who are simply looking to gain benefits from the opening of the Celestial Gate—they aren’t necessarily all destabilizing factors for the Central City Government.

They are chasing their own advancement. Once the Rifts open, they’ll most likely clash with the things from the other side, serving as high-quality, free cannon fodder.

The real enemies the Central City Government must guard against have always been the major corporations and factions, as well as those entities from across the Merging Land. Those are the ones to watch out for.

Therefore, he had a faint feeling that his targets might end up being these groups. Of course, it could also be a single target.

As this thought crossed his mind, a figure flashed through his head.

Despite the current lack of information, the four of them proceeded to draw up several contingency plans, each for a different hypothetical enemy.

But plans were just plans, only existing on paper. The real situation would be far more complex, so they would have to adapt as things happened.

After discussing the plans, Qin Qingque added, "Captain, this residence could be set up as an excellent base. The only thing it’s missing is a Domain-disrupting creature, which makes it easy to monitor. I suggest we try to rent a military-grade interference creature from the Defense Department and place it in the basement."

"Considering the communication problems that will arise from the Domain’s information transfer after the Fumu splits, it would be best to get a small Domain creature as well. It doesn’t need to be too good; one with a communication radius of about two or three kilometers would be sufficient. It could travel with the car, allowing us to stay in contact as long as we aren’t too far apart."

Chen Chuan said, "Alright. Executioner Qin, I’ll leave this to you. You handle contacting the Defense Department about renting the equipment."

It was never wrong to be overprepared. Besides, since they were cooperating with the government this time, the Defense Department would naturally reimburse their operational expenses afterward. He wouldn’t have to spend his own money, so they might as well use whatever they could get.

Outside Central City, on the northern coastline, waves rolled in one after another, making a crashing sound. In the distant night sky, several points of white light flickered, drawing closer with the growing hum of propellers.

Guan Shangjing, the security director of the Ferris Wheel Company, and Song Zicheng, the deputy director, stood there. Behind them, besides the logistics team, was a squad of armed soldiers with Implants, carrying guns and blades, and wearing conical protective helmets.

Guided by signal lights on the ground, a small, unmarked Airship gradually came into view and slowly landed at a temporary mooring point.

After it stabilized, the cabin door opened, and a retractable ladder was lowered to the ground. A group of people then walked down.

Leading them was a young Fighter dressed in an old-fashioned style: a red robe with a left-side lapel over a black lower garment. He had short hair and wore a pair of round-framed glasses.

The man appeared to be in his early thirties and had a very gentle demeanor. If not for the Long Blade tucked at his waist, one might mistake him for a scholar still in his studies at first glance.

Behind him followed a boy of about fourteen or fifteen, holding a Cross Spear in his hands.

Guan Shangjing led his men forward and bowed. "Senior Brother Gongying!" With a rustle, the men behind him bowed in unison.

Gongying Changxiu smiled and returned the bow. "Junior Brother Guan Shang."

Guan Shangjing straightened up and said, "It must have been a long journey, Senior Brother. Please, follow me."

Gongying Changxiu said, "Lead the way."

The logistics team personnel watched him get into the car with Guan Shangjing. Recalling his warm smile and his gentle, refined aura, they couldn’t help but feel a little surprised.

Once they were in the car, two of the staff members began talking in low voices:

"Is that Gongying Changxiu? He doesn’t look the part at all."

"Yeah, I agree. I thought I was watching a neighbor’s older brother come home. His voice sounds so refined, too. He’s so polite, a surprisingly approachable gentleman."

However, the person in charge of this operation turned around and said sternly, "You two, be serious!"

"Yes, Group Leader." The two of them immediately sat up straight.

The person in charge looked ahead, a hint of wariness and fear in his eyes. He whispered, "Gongying Changxiu, also known as ’Ghost Gongying.’ His true face is nothing like what you just saw!"
