Chapter 579 - 309: Hard and Soft

Chang Kuanghai stood there, the gash above his collarbone gradually closing and healing. Not even a trace of blood seeped out, contained as it was by the Mutated Organization within him.

In what seemed like the blink of an eye, the wound vanished without a trace.

He glanced at the axe still embedded in the ground, wanting to retrieve it. Fighting an enemy empty-handed was a real disadvantage. Although his torn flesh could repair itself quickly, it still took a little time. Too many wounds would begin to affect his combat performance.

But he saw that although Chen Chuan had retreated, he was clearly waiting for him to make a move for the weapon. That single moment of delay would be all the opportunity Chen Chuan needed to press his advantage again.

So, after a moment’s thought, he gave up on the idea. He would have to find another chance during the fight.

Chen Chuan briefly composed himself, then gave his Snow Monarch Blade a slight flick. He strode forward. His first two steps were slow, but on the third, his body blurred, and he shot straight ahead.

With a weapon in hand while his opponent was bare-fisted, he no longer needed to hold back on certain attacks.

Chang Kuanghai split his stance, one leg forward and one back, and sank into a slight crouch. He held his arms horizontally before him, one high and one low, his eyes fixed on Chen Chuan through the gap between them, ready to meet the blow.

Seeing the tip of the blade coming straight for his face, he narrowed his eyes and arched his back, moving forward to intercept it. Simultaneously, his arms flipped outward, fingers splayed. He intended to use his body as an anvil to stop the Long Blade, then lock it with his hands and wrest it away.

Before Chang Kuanghai could execute his plan, Chen Chuan twisted the Long Blade sideways. The edge grazed the surface of his opponent’s thick arm, instantly creating a thin, bloody line. However, Chang Kuanghai’s expression didn’t change, and the wound healed the very moment the blade moved away.

Chen Chuan stepped to his side and executed a backhand slash at the back of Chang Kuanghai’s knee. The larger man met the attack by turning his knee outward, blocking the cut.

Chen Chuan then feinted forward, as if to circle around behind him. But just as Chang Kuanghai’s center of gravity shifted in response, Chen Chuan suddenly retreated a step. Sinking his waist and back, he brought the Long Blade down, a cold glint of light aimed directly at his opponent’s ankle.

Chang Kuanghai’s expression hardened. He immediately channeled Power downward, planting his feet firmly to endure the blow. His body was incredibly tough; the blade wouldn’t sever his leg. However, the Power behind the strike was enough to throw him off balance.

However, just as the blade was about to fall, it flashed and arced upward in a diagonal slash toward his lower abdomen. He immediately pressed his hand down to block the blade’s path. But at that moment, Chen Chuan suddenly advanced, appearing at his side in an instant. The blade followed the motion, and with a smooth cut, opened a bloody gash on the back of his other knee.

In these few exchanges, he fully exploited the advantages of the Snow Monarch Blade’s length and his own speed, landing blow after blow. With the Long Blade in hand, his opponent’s fists and feet couldn’t reach him, preventing any effective counterattack. This created a situation where Chen Chuan was the sole aggressor, and his opponent could only passively defend.

Chang Kuanghai remained remarkably composed. Such minor injuries were nothing to him. Practitioners of Horizontal Training were known for their resilience in battle; he could keep this up for days and nights on end without batting an eye.

The problem, however, was that he had come here seeking a breakthrough in his Spiritual Power. He wanted to perfect himself and ascend to a higher level.

The Celestial Forgiveness Fist he practiced was a style that heavily emphasized aggression. It required him to fuel his spiritual ascension through combat. The more resolute his will to fight and the more intense the battle, the more his spirit would soar.

Simply standing here and taking hits was spiritually antithetical to his fighting style. He wouldn’t be able to gain any benefit from the opened Celestial Gate this way.

Therefore, he had to find a way to change the situation.

After enduring several more of Chen Chuan’s slashes, his chest heaved violently. For a moment, his heart seemed to let out a thunderous THUMP-THUMP, like the beating of a war drum.

He seemed to have grown slightly leaner. Just then, the blade flashed toward him again. He met it with his elbow, parrying the blade with a loud CLANG. He then held his arm before him like a bull’s horn. His upper body remained motionless, but with an extremely subtle burst of force from the sole of his foot, he shot forward with a BOOM.

This short, explosive burst was a special technique from the Celestial Forgiveness Fist known as the Elephant Ox Peak. If one were trapped in a military formation, surrounded by layers of long spears and Shields with no room to maneuver, this technique could be used to instantly shatter the formation and break through the encirclement.

In that instant, his speed and Power multiplied!

Chen Chuan saw him appear before him in an instant, with no room to dodge. He stomped his rear foot, leaned forward, and thrust out his other hand, slamming it onto the charging elbow with a loud SMACK. Rings of dust and air blasted out from the point of impact. Though he had blocked the charge, he was still sent sliding backward.

This time, he was pushed back a full seven or eight meters. The flagstones beneath his feet shattered and flew, as he carved a deep trench into the ground.

The moment he stopped, Chang Kuanghai unleashed Power from his waist and back. The raised elbow brought his forearm down in a powerful chop, his fist smashing forward like a war hammer.

This was the "Thunderous Sky Hammer," a signature move of the Celestial Forgiveness Fist. As he was much taller than Chen Chuan and striking from above, the attack enveloped almost all of Chen Chuan’s body.

It seemed Chen Chuan had nowhere to dodge, yet his gaze was perfectly calm. As the fist descended, he moved aside as if completely unaffected by the prior impact, deftly avoiding the blow.

Chang Kuanghai hadn’t expected him to be able to dodge that. However, having mastered the Celestial Forgiveness Fist to such a degree, he could retract and unleash his Power at will. He immediately halted the punch’s momentum, preventing his own body from being thrown off balance.

Yet, he had still paused for an instant. In that moment, Chen Chuan let go of the Snow Monarch Blade. His hands clamped down on Chang Kuanghai’s arm, one in front and one behind, fingers sinking deep into the solid muscle. He had unleashed a Capturing Force.

Chang Kuanghai knew something was wrong. But with his Horizontal Training physique, even the Capturing Force couldn’t instantly rob him of his ability to resist. He immediately circulated his Power and swung his other fist at Chen Chuan, trying to force him to release his grip.

Chen Chuan raised an elbow to block. The impact shook them both, but Chang Kuanghai still couldn’t break free. Chen Chuan then rapidly alternated his grip, his hands moving up along the joints of Chang Kuanghai’s arm, closing in on his throat while unleashing continuous bursts of Capturing Force.

Chang Kuanghai felt half his body growing numb and weak. If his throat was seized, the fight would be over.

He exhaled sharply. The muscles on his captured arm bulged, and a powerful Shocking Force erupted outward.

Chen Chuan’s fingers were jolted away, but he didn’t retreat. He used the momentum of Chang Kuanghai’s exertion to press in close, flush against his body. At the same time, his hands slid down and grabbed his opponent’s waist and hips, preparing to use a Wrestling Takedown Force.

The transition from Capturing Force to Wrestling Takedown Force was executed with extreme fluidity.

Chang Kuanghai’s expression changed. If this grip took hold, he wouldn’t be able to muster any of his Power and would once again be at his opponent’s mercy.

At this critical moment, he suddenly performed a reverse breathing technique.

In that instant, his body went from rigid to pliable. His once-solid frame seemed to turn boneless, causing the penetrating Wrestling Takedown Force to dissipate completely. He then immediately reversed his breathing again, turning from soft back to hard in a flash. With a single contraction and expansion, a resilient Power vibrated out from within him.

This was the "Heaven and Earth Pull" from the Celestial Forgiveness Fist, a technique that inverted hard and soft states by reversing one’s breathing to counter different types of Power.

Sensing these changes, Chen Chuan knew that continuing his attack would be fruitless. He immediately retreated, snatching the Snow Monarch Blade from the air before it hit the ground. He backed away until he reached a distance where he could fully utilize his Blade Stance, and only then did he stop.

Chang Kuanghai, for his part, needed to recover from his consecutive bursts of Power and did not give chase.

’If Wei Wusheng sought a union of hard and soft,’ Chen Chuan thought, ’then Chang Kuanghai, with his Horizontal Training, has pushed both hard and soft Power to their absolute peak. He’s already achieved a perfect balance of the two.’

’The man has almost no obvious weaknesses. On top of that, his spirit is firm and condensed. With someone like this, unless you can exhaust his stamina and Essence Blood, attacking from the outside is useless.’

’In that case, there’s only one way...’

He raised his hand and plunged the Snow Monarch Blade into the ground.

Seeing this, Chang Kuanghai asked in a deep voice, "You’re not going to use that anymore?" He was puzzled. With the blade in hand, Chen Chuan clearly had the advantage. He couldn’t understand why he would make such a choice.

Chen Chuan replied, "Because it’s no longer necessary."

Just now, he had been continuously cutting his opponent’s body with the blade. It seemed he was merely skirmishing from the outside, but in reality, he was trying to bait his opponent into attacking first so he could finish him with Capture and Wrestling Takedown techniques.

But since that had failed, there was no need to continue fighting that way.

Although his opponent seemed to have no openings, it didn’t mean there were truly no options left.

’No matter how strong his Horizontal Training is, there’s a limit to how much it can endure.’

He took a deep breath. After releasing the restraints of his body’s Mutated Organization, his Furnace Breathing Method began to operate at full power. Wisps of white smoke began to rise from his body.

He then raised his head, the tips of his hair whipping up in the strong currents blowing from the Rift. The next moment, the figure standing there blurred.

Chang Kuanghai was instantly on high alert. He lowered his center of gravity and leaned forward, bracing himself for an attack.

But he was only halfway through the motion when he discovered Chen Chuan was already in front of him, leaping into the air. His raised fist seemed to hang there for a moment before smashing down violently!

In that instant, the very air around them seemed to detonate!

His reaction was just as swift. With a surge of breath, he drew Power up from his feet and raised his arms to block.

BOOM! At the point of contact, an immense and overwhelming Power surged down from above. He let out a muffled grunt, his nostrils flaring and his face flushing with blood. He involuntarily sank downward as the ground beneath his feet cracked and collapsed. As his muscles bulged, the fabric of his pants tore open.

Yet before he could adjust, Chen Chuan, still in mid-air, brought down a second punch. This fist was so fast, and the shockwave from the first had yet to fade, that he had no time to use Dissipating Force. Unable to bear it, he crashed down onto one knee with a resounding BOOM.
