Yu Lie was knocked away, rolling across the ground to dissipate the force of the impact.
When he got back up, he witnessed the astonishing scene before him.
He couldn’t help but be shocked. He had just experienced the creature’s power firsthand. It also had a Mutated Organization inside, and combined with its sheer mass, its charge was something he couldn’t possibly withstand.
Yet this person had just cut it clean in two with a simple wave of his hand. ’That kind of power...’
But a moment later, his spirits lifted.
The newcomer was from the special operations team. To be honest, the pressure Chen Bitong put on him was immense. If the operations team had someone with this level of strength, then they had a chance against Chen Bitong.
He steadied himself. ’This man hasn’t exposed my identity. Either he doesn’t know, or he has other plans. I’ll just have to remain undercover.’
Beside him, Fang Zhixin showed a hint of nervousness. He had followed Chen Bitong the longest and had seen the most, so he recognized the origin of this strike. "Is that... Splitting Force...? No, it’s more than that..."
Splitting Force was merely a difficult type of Power to master in the army, but ordinary people couldn’t produce such an effect. This strike had to be a combination of Spiritual Power and physical strength to display such immense destructive force.
This was an adversary on the same level as Teacher Chen.
After delivering the blow, Old Hu ignored the bisected insect and stared intently at Chen Bitong.
Yu Lie and Fang Zhixin had seen his astonishingly overt strike, but he was more wary of how Chen Bitong had silently evaded the beetle’s charge.
He was certain that Chen Bitong hadn’t moved at all.
Therefore, he deduced that Chen Bitong had likely used his Spiritual Power to establish a connection with the Rift, slipping into a fissure within it for an instant. That was how the beetle had failed to hit him.
Reaching this level was not something one could achieve simply by cultivating Spiritual Power to Perfection. It also required unique techniques and talent.
But he had never seen Chen Bitong use a similar technique before.
’Did he master it in the last five years, or...’
Whatever the reason, he had to re-evaluate Chen Bitong’s strength.
He then spoke in a raspy voice, "Chen Bitong, of all our old teammates, besides me, the rest are either dead or crippled. Yet in the end, you were the only one hailed as a hero."
"Did you really earn that so-called fame all by yourself? I refuse to accept that. But after today, you won’t be a hero any longer."
Chen Bitong replied in a flat tone, "I’ve never thought of it that way."
Old Hu snorted. "That’s what I hate most about you. You gained so much, yet you still act so nonchalant."
A dangerous glint appeared in his eyes. "Well, that’s enough talk..."
As he spoke, he slowly raised his hand and lowered his stance, looking ready to strike. At the same time, an air of danger and an invisible pressure radiated from him.
Behind him, Yu Lie and Fang Zhixin tensed up. Even though they were far away, they could clearly feel the pressure, making it hard for them to breathe.
In contrast, nothing could be felt from Chen Bitong. He stood there as if he didn’t exist.
Just as the two were about to make their move, lightning flashed from the Rift, and new sounds emerged from within. In the rear, Fang Zhixin and Yu Lie exchanged a glance and immediately turned back toward the Rift.
Several dark figures appeared in the Rift. As the shadows grew larger, with a deafening ROAR, a line of Cavalry Soldiers charged out at incredible speed.
Leading them were three Third Limit Duty Samurai. They rode abreast in a single line, each five meters apart, their horses’ chests forming an almost perfect horizontal line from the side. Traction Ropes were strung between the horses, maintaining a unified rhythm at high speed, while the three men held their Long Spears level, aimed forward.
Yu Lie and Fang Zhixin’s expressions changed. Setting aside the wall-like momentum pressing down on them, the coordinated aura of the three riders—their Power almost completely unified by the Traction Ropes—was not something they could face head-on. Knowing they couldn’t block it, the two quickly dodged to the sides.
Just as this line of Riding Warriors trampled forth, another line charged out behind them, this one composed of Cavalry Soldiers below the Third Limit.
Line after line followed. This was the "One-Nine Traverse Formation" of the Old Imperial Family. It used one line of Duty Samurai as the vanguard, followed by multiple lines of ordinary Cavalry Soldiers. The number of lines could vary from one to nine, with wave after wave charging in succession. On the battlefields of the old era, this repeated assault could break even the most fortified positions.
After dodging, Fang Zhixin and Yu Lie simultaneously spotted a flaw on the formation’s flanks. Without waiting for all the Cavalry Soldiers to emerge, they attempted to charge in and intercept them.
But they quickly discovered it wasn’t that simple. The riders on the far left and right of the front line actually unhooked their Traction Ropes, split off to the sides, and circled around behind them. This maneuver put them in a position for a flanking attack.
If another group of high-level experts were to charge out of the Rift then, they could be pincered from front and back and killed within the formation in an instant.
Thus, they were forced to abandon this idea and retreat from the encirclement.
The lead rider, however, spurred his horse on, leading the rear ranks of Cavalry Soldiers forward. He aimed his Long Spear at the back of the seemingly unremarkable Chen Bitong. But as they charged, the rider and horse passed right through him as if shattering a mere illusion.
Old Hu only had eyes for Chen Bitong. Seeing this Duty Knight charge over, he said impatiently, "Get lost." He slapped the spear shaft with one hand, hitting only its tip, yet the burst of Power sent both the opposing Knight and his horse flying sideways.
Then he lunged, launching himself toward Chen Bitong. As his figure flashed past, the heavy cavalry charging in his path exploded, man and horse alike. A massive trench was simultaneously plowed into the ground. Wreathed in this spray of shredded flesh and blood, he thrust a finger toward Chen Bitong’s face.
Outside this area, Emergency Team Two, dispatched by Specialist Liang, had already arrived. They stood atop a high billboard, watching the scene unfold.
One of them was a man in his forties with a full beard and a profound, cold expression. He wore a dark blue tie at his collar and a crisp, dark gray uniform from the Administrative Affairs Hall. This was Nie Guanshan from the Administrative Affairs Hall.
The other was a man of about thirty-five or thirty-six with short hair, thick lips, and narrow eyes that held a look of utter contempt. A cigarette dangled from his mouth. Though he wore a military uniform, his cap was askew, and the jacket was just draped casually over his shoulders. This was Yang Shen from the Defense Department.
According to the Defense Department’s assessment, both of these men were on the same level of power as Chen Bitong. However, Chen Bitong’s fame and prestige far surpassed anything they could hope to achieve.
After arriving, they didn’t rush in. Instead, they stopped to observe from a distance. Having just seen Chen Bitong evade the insect’s charge, they had reached the same conclusion as Old Hu.
Yang Shen squinted and said, "This wasn’t in the intel. Chen Bitong has this ability. With his experience, he’s virtually unbeatable in a one-on-one fight in front of a Rift."
"Even if the two of us team up, it’ll be hard to pose a threat to him."
Nie Guanshan agreed with this assessment. With such a technique, as long as the Rift was there, he could use it as a pillar of support. Even a saturation bombardment of the area would pose no threat to Chen Bitong.
He looked at Old Hu, who was currently fighting Chen Bitong. "But if we add him to the equation, it should be enough."
Yang Shen immediately rejected the idea. "Impossible. The people from the provisional committee will never cooperate with us. We’d be lucky if they don’t get in our way."
He said, "I still think the previous tactic is viable. The situation has changed, but as long as someone can tie down Chen Bitong when we make our move, it can still work. We need to request another operative from our superiors."
Nie Guanshan said, "Finding someone like that on short notice won’t be easy."
Sucking on his cigarette, Yang Shen said nonchalantly, "Not our problem. Let the Defense Hall figure it out. If they can’t find a helper like that, we’ll refuse to engage. We don’t need to fight battles we aren’t sure we can win."
Nie Guanshan nodded. "Since Colonel Yang is of this opinion, let’s submit the request."
Inside the command center, Specialist Liang quickly received the request submitted by the two, along with the stated reasons. He could also read between the lines of their wording: if suitable personnel were not provided, they would refuse to engage.
He frowned slightly. Because these two were part of a high-level plan, they had a certain degree of autonomy and advisory power, allowing them to refuse missions they deemed inappropriate.
’The best solution right now is to send another team over.’
He had Team One on hand, a squad whose strength was no less than Team Two’s. But he couldn’t concentrate all his squads of this caliber in one place. It would be a waste of resources and make them harder to control.
Not to mention, they were about to face the sixth, and possibly even the seventh, wave of divisions. He also had to consider even more dangerous situations that might arise later.
But if he didn’t use them, where else could he find a suitable candidate?
After thinking for a long time, he said to his female assistant, "Get me Captain Chen."
At that very moment, Chen Chuan was standing before a Rift, leaning on his saber. He was guiding the Spiritual Reflection Method, using his Spiritual Power to absorb as much essence from the other world as possible, while remaining vigilant.
Initially, people had been heading toward this area, but their numbers gradually dwindled. They might have realized it was too difficult to break through, or perhaps they learned that the splinter entity here had been destroyed. The area was no longer valuable, so the corporate-hired teams naturally had no reason to pay it any more attention.
As for the Fighters eager to get close to the Celestial Gate, they too turned back after discovering the tight security. With other Rifts now appearing elsewhere in Central City, there was no need for them to stubbornly focus on this one spot. They could easily find opportunities elsewhere.
But even without these people, all sorts of creatures continued to emerge from the other side, many of them causing immense trouble. A large number of creature carcasses already lay fallen around him.
Just then, his Realm Token began to flash. As he was about to answer the call, the light on the other side suddenly wavered, as if something huge was about to come through.
