Chapter 608 - 348: Profound

Inside the vehicle, Mr. Pan was growing restless.

He hadn’t wanted to take this route. It wasn’t just because the environment was unsettling, but also because the Plague Cult had a terrible reputation, even in the Lower City District. No one willingly came near this place.

But he had no choice. If he couldn’t point out a viable path today, he might never get out of this vehicle alive.

As the vehicle pressed on, a deep sense of unease washed over him. The light was dim, but more than that, there was a complete and utter silence outside, save for the sound of their own engine.

The deep, dark tunnel ahead felt like an endless void, utterly suffocating.

Che Gaoyi narrowed his eyes. They had been driving for over half an hour with no sign of an exit. He had also noticed something strange: the graffiti on the walls was starting to repeat.

A Third Limit Fighter’s memory was typically excellent, and this was one of his particular strengths. He had memorized all the patterns from just a single glance.

’We’re not heading toward our destination. We’re driving in circles!’

Upon realizing this, he immediately spoke into his Realm Token, "Stop the convoy!"

The entire convoy came to a halt.

He said, "All vehicles, report in. Check your status."

The armed vehicles reported back one by one, but they soon discovered that a vehicle was inexplicably missing. They had just been in contact with it five minutes ago.

Mr. Pan felt something was terribly wrong. Rumors about the Plague Cult flooded his mind. "Mr. Che, this... this is..." he stammered.

"What’s there to panic about?" Che Gaoyi said coldly.

A vehicle had vanished, yet no one had attacked them along the way. This meant whoever was hiding in the shadows either didn’t want a direct confrontation or lacked the ability to pull one off.

He spoke into his Realm Token again. "All vehicles, check in every two minutes. On my command, we’re pulling back."

He had his own vehicle turn around and took the lead. Every detail of the route they had just taken—the changing patterns on the walls, the various marks on the ground—surfaced in his mind.

He didn’t need to see the actual road. He simply led the convoy back, retracing their path from memory.

At that moment, his powers of observation were as sharp as an active Consciousness Body.

Over half an hour later, they successfully returned to the tunnel entrance where they had started.

"We’re out." Mr. Pan stared at the familiar glow of the Sun Vines outside, the tension instantly draining from him. He gasped for breath in his seat.

But after another check, they discovered that yet another vehicle was gone.

A chill ran through the crew. They had all just checked in right before exiting the tunnel. How could it have vanished?

They weren’t afraid of a straight-up fight, but this was something that defied all logic. It made their skin crawl.

Che Gaoyi was the only one in the entire convoy who remained calm. He had no intention of looking for the two missing vehicles. The Splinter Entity they were transporting wasn’t in them, and he couldn’t afford to stop for two vehicles and their crew.

Mr. Pan watched him cautiously. "Mr. Che, what do we do now?" Both routes were dead ends, and he had no idea what to suggest. He was terrified Che Gaoyi would take out his anger on him.

"Go back to the previous road," Che Gaoyi said decisively. "We’ll force our way through there."

Ramming through a Processing Bureau checkpoint wasn’t a good idea, but it was now their only way out. It was better than facing the unknown horrors of this place.

At his command, the convoy started up again. As they left, he took one last, long look back at the deep, seemingly endless tunnel.

In the Hongsheng District, in the square where the Rift had vanished, Chen Chuan sat in an armed vehicle, sipping a hot drink provided by the response unit. He was wearing a cloak over his uniform.

He glanced at his palm. Chen Bitong’s final punch had transferred a sliver of Spiritual Power to him. He could sense information embedded within it, but he’d need to heighten his own spirit to access it.

’It won’t be long, though.’

He could feel he was just on the verge of a breakthrough—just a tiny bit away. The day was still young; he’d have his chance.

Even if not for this, he had to advance his Spiritual Power for the Pure Essence that would soon arrive. Only then could he hope to gather more of it.

After finishing his drink and resting for a moment, his Realm Token chimed. He glanced at it and accepted the call.

"Specialist?"

Specialist Liang’s voice came through. "Captain Chen, I know you must be exhausted after dealing with the situation there, but I have to ask you to take on one more task. You are the only one suitable for it."

"Go ahead, Specialist," Chen Chuan said.

Specialist Liang said, "Several Splinter Entities are currently unaccounted for. We suspect Lianwei Zhongyu Company accepted a contract to transport one, and their convoy has already headed into the Underground City District.

An hour ago, a checkpoint we set up at a hidden entrance detected an attempt to pass through—we believe it was Lianwei Zhongyu. We lost contact after that, but they must be looking for other exits.

The situation in the Lower City District is very complicated. Our personnel can’t easily go deep, nor are they trusted there. We know Fusion Boundary Company supports a local logistics team, and you still hold the position of security supervisor for them. You’ll have a much easier time operating there than we would.

Therefore, we need you to go there and intercept the Lianwei Zhongyu convoy."

Chen Chuan considered this for a moment, then asked, "What are my rules of engagement from the Defense Department?"

Specialist Liang’s voice was grim. "I am now authorizing you on behalf of the Defense Department and the Administrative Affairs Hall. Regarding any matter related to the Splinter Entities, you are permitted to use any and all means necessary. All communication channels and teams will be at your disposal.

I have only one requirement: intercept that convoy at all costs. If you find the Splinter Entity, confirm its identity and destroy it on site."

"Specialist, I understand," Chen Chuan said. "I’ll get it done."

Specialist Liang said, "Captain Chen, I’ve already dispatched a dedicated convoy to pick you up. The Lower City District isn’t like other places. Be careful."

Chen Chuan thanked him and ended the call.

He sat for another moment before hearing an armed convoy approaching in the distance. He got out of his vehicle and stood in the middle of the road.

The convoy stopped a short distance away. The temporary commander and his men disembarked swiftly, saluted him, and then stepped aside.

A security officer presented him with a brand new Execution Captain’s uniform, complete with a newly issued sword.

Chen Chuan gave it a look, then changed into the uniform right there. After putting on the cap, someone came forward to drape the Protective Cloak over his shoulders. He pulled his protective gloves tight, glanced around, and boarded an armed vehicle.

The convoy quickly turned around and drove off under the watchful eyes of the emergency response unit.

Flickering Rifts could still be seen along the road. Although some of the previous ones had disappeared, as long as the fission period wasn’t over, more would continue to appear.

Fortunately, these Rifts were appearing directly above the Fumu’s body and weren’t spreading. Otherwise, the Lower City District might have descended into even greater chaos than the Upper City District.

Chen Chuan used the frequency given to him by the Defense Department to contact Fusion Boundary Company. Through a dedicated channel set up by the company, he found Lan Xinnan. They spoke briefly, he learned more about the situation from her, and they arranged to meet at a specific location.

A few minutes later, the convoy found the nearest tunnel entrance and entered the Lower City District.

Once inside, they proceeded to the location he specified and found the nearby Lu Tong Logistics outpost.

The outpost personnel were initially hostile and wary, but after he identified himself as the security supervisor for Fusion Boundary Company, the atmosphere immediately relaxed. They even sent someone to guide them.

Another half hour later, the convoy arrived at a tunnel entrance.

Lan Xinnan was waiting there on a motorcycle, with about thirty armed riders behind her.

The lead vehicle pulled up and stopped. The window rolled down, and Chen Chuan looked out from inside. "Captain Lan."

Lan Xinnan seemed momentarily dazed. Seeing Chen Chuan in the car, wearing a peaked cap and a cloak, he looked very different from before. She felt a little reserved.

She collected herself and said seriously, "Mr. Chen. We received the message from the company. We’re to give you our full cooperation.

However, a convoy this large traveling through the underground will attract vigilance and hostility from all sides. It will hinder your operation and have a major impact on Lu Tong Logistics."

Chen Chuan nodded. "Captain Lan, I understand your concerns. This time, you only need to answer to me. I won’t drag Lu Tong Logistics into this."

He spoke into his Realm Token, "Leave the vehicles carrying the Domain Creatures and the signal jamming equipment. All other personnel, withdraw."

They had their orders from high command: follow all of Chen Chuan’s commands for this operation. The armed personnel didn’t hesitate. Leaving behind the vehicles with the equipment, the rest immediately turned and departed.

Chen Chuan then asked, "Captain Lan, your people know how to handle this equipment, right?"

"Yes, we can."

Lan Xinnan had someone push her motorcycle aside and ordered her crew to board the vehicles to take over the equipment. She herself got into Chen Chuan’s vehicle and sat down. She was no longer as tense as before. "Brother Chen, you’re looking for the Lianwei Zhongyu convoy?"

Chen Chuan nodded. "That’s them. They’re carrying something extremely important and are trying to transport it out through the Lower City District. Can you help, Captain Lan?"

"They’re making too much noise," Lan Xinnan said with certainty. "We’ve been monitoring their movements. We have a good idea of where they’re headed."

Chen Chuan nodded. "Then, Captain Lan, please lead the way."
