Chapter 609 - 348: Waterway

The armored vehicle traveled through the tunnels of the Lower City District. Without the main fleet of armored vehicles following it, and with a guide and escort from Lu Tong Logistics, it was much less conspicuous. The journey was smooth.

Lan Xinnan said, "Lianwei Zhongyu’s convoy has been taking a winding route, but based on their direction, they should be heading for an emergency passage that Lu Tong Logistics left behind."

"Only a few people know about this passage. I only learned of its existence after Old Bian mentioned it."

She turned to him and said, "This is all thanks to you, Brother Chen. If you hadn’t intimidated Old Bian, he never would have told us any of this."

A thought occurred to Chen Chuan. He asked, "Do many people know about this road?"

Lan Xinnan said, "Not many. Old Bian said only a few members of the Upper Layer at Lu Tong Logistics knew about it. Even the Iron Fist Association doesn’t know. So, since Lianwei Zhongyu’s convoy is heading there now, we suspect their guide is most likely an old acquaintance of ours."

Chen Chuan nodded. ’Lianwei Zhongyu’s current operation probably wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment decision,’ he thought. ’It seems to be part of a long-term, carefully laid plan.’

’But none of this has anything to do with me. I don’t need to understand the details. I just need to know where they are and what needs to be done.’

Meanwhile, Che Gaoyi had already led his team to the checkpoint that had previously blocked them. He ordered the people behind him to wait in place, got out of the vehicle by himself, and walked ahead.

A Third Limit Fighter was guarding the checkpoint ahead. Since the convoy had split up, most of the forces he’d brought along had been assigned to the other group. That left him to handle this side personally.

When he got to the front, he saw a row of roadblocks under the light of the Sun Vines. Behind them were Processing Bureau personnel, armed and ready. The Third Limit Fighter was at the very front. He was wearing a zip-up shirt on top, but his pants were part of an Executioner’s uniform.

His hair was dyed blond, and he was chewing gum. He sat on top of a roadblock, watching Che Gaoyi approach. "Oh? Looks like you want a fight," he said. "Let me give you a little warning: the road ahead isn’t easy. It’s not too late to turn back."

Che Gaoyi didn’t stop. He continued walking toward him.

"So you’re not giving up, huh?" The Processing Bureau Fighter hopped down, pressing one palm against his other fist and slowly cracking his knuckles with a sharp CRACKLE.

’The Bureau sent me a file with a simple introduction to Che Gaoyi. It says he’s skilled in Scattering Hand and Capture Technique, but his real specialty is his legwork. Of course, the file can’t possibly include everything, and he might have some hidden tricks, but it’s not bad. At least I have a general idea of what to expect.’

Che Gaoyi’s initial pace was slow, but he sped up as he got closer. When they were near each other, he was the first to throw a punch. The Fighter spat out his gum with a PTHOO and met the attack with a punch of his own.

The two fists met. A surge of Power rushed into Che Gaoyi’s body. But before he could fully dissipate it, the Fighter’s other arm trembled, his shoulder thrust forward, and in an instant, another wave of force surged forth. This blow sent him staggering back several steps.

He had a series of linked techniques meant to create a continuous stream of offensive Power, but his opponent’s blow had completely repelled it, preventing him from using them at all.

The Fighter, however, stood his ground, completely unmoved. He spread his hands, lowered his stance, and stretched both arms outward from a low position. A loud POP of cracking bones echoed out, and the sound of swirling air currents rushed along the nearby tunnel walls. It felt as if he was filled with a ferocious power; even the ground where he stood cracked and splintered.

"Transmission Power..."

Che Gaoyi recognized it immediately. This was a very famous Force Technique from the old Dashun North Continent. The Power throughout the user’s body was interconnected, allowing it to be borrowed and stacked. Once mastered, the Power could be layered, making it an exceptionally ferocious Force Technique.

He stared at the man for a few moments. ’Processing Bureau agents really can’t be underestimated. But...’

He shook his fist and charged forward again, throwing the exact same punch as before.

"Not convinced? Then let’s go again!"

The Fighter threw a punch. With a loud SMACK, they made contact. But this time, as he tried to unleash his Power and blast Che Gaoyi away, he found that his opponent had withdrawn his hand, pulling back along the flow of the Power. As a result, even though he emitted his Power, the space in front of him was empty. The feeling was completely awkward.

He let out a sharp cry to regulate his breathing, and his follow-up Power surged forward.

Che Gaoyi was forced back repeatedly, left with only the ability to defend himself. But after they exchanged more than a dozen moves, the situation gradually began to change.

The Fighter realized that his attacks were having trouble landing solidly. Che Gaoyi managed to neutralize them every time, and he was gradually becoming harder to suppress.

Che Gaoyi’s true strength wasn’t his Power, but his observational ability. Whenever he fought someone and saw their techniques and how they emitted their Force, he could figure out a counter-strategy and identify their weaknesses in an extremely short amount of time. He was, in a sense, a purely technical Fighter.

The Fighter was starting to feel frustrated. His opponent’s raw power was clearly inferior to his own, yet he always managed to find some gap or crucial point that disrupted the flow of his attacks and Power. This forced him to increase the strength of his attacks. While that had some effect for a time, it also inadvertently exposed and magnified some of his own vulnerabilities.

After they were entangled for another half a minute, Che Gaoyi suddenly shot out a hand and latched onto his wrist.

"Hm?"

The Fighter’s expression froze. ’Normally, when someone skilled in Capturing Force gets a hold of their opponent, the latter has almost no way to resist. But I’m different. My Transmission Power can counter this type of Power.’

He shouted, and his Power immediately erupted as a Shocking Force, trying to blast the fingers off his wrist. However, just as his Power flared, Che Gaoyi—as if he’d predicted it perfectly—proactively released his grip, only to clamp down again.

The Fighter’s pupils shrank. He wanted to unleash his Shocking Force again, but this time, Che Gaoyi didn’t give him the chance. Before he could activate it, the Capturing Force had already seeped in, locking him down with a SNAP.

The Fighter hurriedly tried to counter with his Aftermath, but this time Che Gaoyi didn’t let go. He held on tightly and suddenly shot a kick up from below, striking his opponent’s throat with a sharp THWACK.

The kick was silent and incredibly swift. Struck by the blow, the Fighter’s eyes bulged, his face flushed red, and he tried to cough but couldn’t. Then, another kick landed on his neck. With a sickening CRACK, the man’s neck snapped, and he collapsed to the side.

Che Gaoyi reached out and popped his dislocated arm back into its socket. The man’s raw power had been superior to his, but a real fight isn’t decided by that alone. Combat performance is also a crucial factor.

BANG! BANG! BANG!

At that moment, gunshots rang out from the other side. The Processing Bureau staff behind the roadblocks had seen that something was wrong and opened fire on him.

He immediately lunged forward, braving the incoming bullets to charge into the group. His figure seemed to weave back and forth among them, and in just a few short moments, the gunfire ceased entirely.

After looking around and seeing no one left standing, Che Gaoyi returned to the front of the convoy and ordered, "Everyone, escort the package and keep moving forward. I’ll hold off anyone who follows."

"Mr.... Mr. Che, what... what about me...?" Mr. Pan poked his head out of a car window, suddenly panicked.

Che Gaoyi glanced at him and said, "You go with them."

Mr. Pan finally breathed a sigh of relief. He quickly got out of his vehicle and switched to another car.

Che Gaoyi waited for the vehicles to pass, one by one. He then turned to walk back to his own main vehicle, but after just two steps, his chest suddenly tightened. He slapped a hand against the car’s body to steady himself, a trickle of blood seeping from the corner of his mouth.

This was the delayed effect of trading blows with the Transmission Force. His Inner Viscera had been shaken by the impacts, and the damage was only just now surfacing. It had been completely undetectable beforehand.

’If this had happened during the fight, it would have been fatal. But now... as long as I’m not dead, it’s fine.’ After a moment to regulate himself, he quickly recovered.

He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth, walked to the back of the car, and opened the trunk. From inside, he lifted out a heavy, large crate. After placing it on the ground, he ripped off the iron chains securing it, grabbed the edge of the lid, and threw it open. Lying inside was a burly, muscular man dressed in black protective gear.

As the light shone down, the burly man’s eyes snapped open. He sat up and stared intently at Che Gaoyi.

Che Gaoyi said, "No. 9, with me."

Hearing his command, the burly man stood up out of the crate. His body, over two meters tall, was a head taller than Che Gaoyi, yet his movements seemed incredibly light and agile.

This was an advanced Combat Puppet that Lianwei Zhongyu had custom-ordered from the Original Man Company. Its original body belonged to a very famous Third Limit Fighter who had supposedly offered himself up to the company as debt payment and undergone biological modification.

Not only was his full strength preserved, but numerous Mutated Organizations were also grafted onto his original body. Moreover, he possessed no emotions whatsoever. Upon encountering an enemy, he would fight relentlessly until one of them was dead.

After giving the order, Che Gaoyi got back in the car. Once No. 9 was inside, he started the engine and drove back the way they came. Before long, he arrived at the spot where he had first sent someone to scout the checkpoint ahead.

He stopped the car, got out, and walked to the wall. He threw a punch. With a loud RUMBLE, the wall collapsed, revealing a gushing underground river behind it.

He had heard the faint sound of water when he passed by here earlier. Based on his experience and the river’s direction of flow, it should lead out of the city.

The river, however, looked rather murky, with all sorts of unidentifiable, suspicious objects floating on its surface.

He returned to the car, put on a protective mask, grabbed a briefcase from the back seat, then turned and leaped into the water, heading downstream.

There was a SPLASH from behind him. No. 9, his face expressionless, had jumped down and was now following him forward.
