Chapter 218: Chapter 218: Control, War, and Famine
"Maybe we just got lucky, but I think it’s more likely that Control did something."
At that moment, Yoru spoke to Asa.
"You’re saying Makima did something? What do you mean?"
Asa asked in confusion.
"You understand what control means, don’t you? She can control any being she considers inferior to herself. That’s her ability as the Control Devil."
Yoru explained, "She controlled that girl and made her put the three of you together. It looked like a random assignment, but she was actually manipulating everything."
"I see..."
Asa nodded despite only partly understanding, then remarked, "In that case, Makima’s ability is really powerful."
"It’s nothing special. My ability is just as powerful as hers, and you could say it belongs to you now too," Yoru said calmly.
"Just as powerful as Makima’s? What kind of ability is it?"
That made Asa curious.
The War Devil and Makima were both members of the Four Horsemen. The Control Devil’s power was control, so what was the War Devil’s power? War itself?
"Listen carefully. My ability allows me to turn anything that belongs to me into a weapon. The more important I believe something is, the stronger the weapon it becomes."
Yoru’s voice carried considerable pride.
However, after thinking about it, Asa did not find the ability particularly impressive.
"It sounds... kind of underwhelming."
Turning things she owned into weapons seemed obviously inferior to the power of control.
"What? You think it’s underwhelming? It’s an incredibly powerful ability!"
Yoru immediately tried to correct Asa’s mistaken impression.
However, simply hearing that explanation still did not help Asa understand what made the ability so powerful.
At first glance, the War Devil’s power really did seem rather ordinary. However, even the Famine Devil acknowledged that the War Devil was the only one who might be capable of preventing Nostradamus’s prophecy from coming true. That meant the ability’s potential destructive power was extraordinarily high.
Overall, the abilities of the Four Horsemen each possessed their own unique traits, though they also shared certain similarities. Aside from the Death Devil, whose abilities remained unknown, the others all possessed powers resembling "control."
They simply operated under different restrictions.
The Control Devil could control those she considered inferior to herself, in other words, anyone she looked down on.
The War Devil could "control" anything belonging to her by turning it into a weapon. However, that power also had exploitable loopholes, such as purchasing an entire aquarium for one million yen despite that price being nowhere near its actual value.
The Famine Devil could "control" starving people. In addition, she could conduct unfair exchanges, such as separating the War Devil from Asa in return for nothing more than a student cap.
Leaving aside the Death Devil’s unknown powers, all three possessed abilities with absurdly exploitable aspects. Their overall strength seemed roughly equal.
The War Devil’s only obvious weakness was that she was an idiot.
Asa argued with Yoru for a while before finally putting an end to it by halfheartedly admitting that Yoru’s ability was extremely powerful.
Although her tone was obviously insincere, the foolish Yoru believed her. She did not even look inside Asa’s mind to check whether she was telling the truth.
As Kotone Asaba, Makima, and Asa left the Devil Hunter Club and prepared to hunt a Devil, someone approached them head-on.
She was a light-haired girl with golden concentric-ringed eyes and a noticeably tilted neck.
It was Fami, the Famine Devil!
