Chapter 222: Chapter 222: A Very Boring Person
Kotone Asaba immediately pulled the Devil’s corpse out of the Kamui dimension and tossed it down for Fami to inspect.
Fami merely glanced at it before saying, "This will do. Congratulations, all three of you have passed the club entrance test."
At that moment, a female student suddenly approached Fami because she needed something from her.
"President Fami."
Hearing how the girl addressed her, Kotone suddenly realized that Fami’s position on the student council was different from what he had originally assumed.
In this world, Fami was the student council president.
After all, the president from the original story had merely been one of Fami’s pawns. Whoever became student council president depended entirely on Fami’s whims. Since Kotone’s arrival in this world had already changed certain events, it was perfectly normal for something like this to be different as well.
They had now joined the Devil Hunter Club, but there was nothing for them to do at the moment.
The club’s usual activities involved imitating Public Safety Devil Hunters by patrolling the school and its surrounding area. Whenever a Devil appeared, they were obligated to fight it. Their duty was to protect the school’s students and faculty from the clutches of Devils as much as possible.
Naturally, no Devils had appeared yet, so Kotone, Makima, and Asa Mitaka formed a three-person group and patrolled the area inside and around the school.
"Asa, today’s Friday, isn’t it? You have the weekend off starting tomorrow, right? Go on a date with that guy," Yoru suddenly said to Asa.
"Whaaat?! What are you suddenly talking about?"
Asa immediately lost her composure.
"A date. How are you supposed to win him over unless you take the initiative and ask him out? Are you planning to wait for him to invite you? I don’t have the patience for that."
Asa’s expression became awkward and embarrassed.
However, under Yoru’s intimidation, she had no choice but to do it.
In reality, Yoru could not do anything to Asa. If anything, she currently depended on Asa’s body. Otherwise, she would still be trapped in that crippled owl form, making everything she wanted to do inconvenient.
Asa knew none of that. She believed Yoru held her life entirely in her hands.
Still, part of the reason was that Yoru’s suggestion had tempted her. She had never experienced what it was like to go on a date before, and the person in question was Kotone.
It was not as though she especially liked him. She only liked him a little, but she was still somewhat eager to experience going on a date at least once.
With that thought, Asa immediately gathered her courage and shyly asked Kotone, "Um, Asaba... Are you free tomorrow?"
"Tomorrow? It’s Saturday, right? I’m free. Why?"
"Well... would you like to go on a... date with me?"
Asa spoke awkwardly.
It sounded incredibly unnatural, but at least she managed to say it.
Makima was walking right beside them, but Asa did not think it mattered if she heard.
Kotone paused for a moment, then seemed to understand what was happening.
The War Devil had probably ordered Asa to ask him out.
He had no reason to refuse.
"Sure," Kotone readily agreed.
Once she heard that Kotone had accepted, Asa immediately became far less nervous.
One of the main reasons she had been so tense was that she was afraid he might reject her invitation. Being turned down would have been unbearably embarrassing.
"Then how about we go to the aquarium tomorrow?" Asa suggested.
Kotone opened his mouth, then stopped himself from speaking.
He could already imagine exactly how Asa would behave once they got there.
After thinking it over, however, he decided not to ask her to choose somewhere else. That was simply Asa’s personality. Even if they changed the location, the result would probably be almost the same.
He could only accept his fate and see whether he could talk some sense into her when the time came.
"Sounds good," Kotone finally said with a nod.
Makima remained silent beside them.
Once their assigned patrol time ended, Kotone, Makima, and Asa each returned home.
That night, Asa finished showering early and lay down in bed, hoping to get plenty of rest before tomorrow’s date.
However, she tossed and turned without being able to fall asleep. She was far too nervous and excited.
Yoru, by contrast, was sprawled across the bed. She had not showered or changed her clothes, yet she had already fallen asleep.
Then again, Yoru’s spiritual form had no need to bathe or change into pajamas, though it was unclear why she needed to sleep at all.
Fortunately, Asa eventually managed to drift off without realizing it. At the very least, she would get enough sleep.
Early the next morning, Asa woke up and immediately began preparing for the date.
After carefully washing up, she deliberately put on one of the rare dresses in her wardrobe instead of her school uniform. However, because she lived alone and had little money, the outfit she had carefully selected did not look much better than her uniform. Then again, her school uniform was already rather attractive.
Asa herself might not have agreed. In her eyes, the outfit she had chosen was already more than pretty enough.
Next, Asa stood in front of the bathroom sink and made the final adjustments to her appearance.
She tried decorating her hair with a hair clip, then practiced smiling at herself in the mirror.
Her smile looked somewhat forced. After all, smiling had never been one of her strengths.
No matter how many times she adjusted the hair clip, it continued to feel awkward and unsatisfying. Asa eventually gave up and muttered to herself, "Forget it. I won’t wear the hair clip. This should be good enough..."
"You look so plain. Wouldn’t it be better to use that makeup you humans have, add more accessories, and really dress yourself up?" Yoru suggested from nearby, her arms crossed.
"You’re so annoying. This is fine. Besides, even if I wanted to wear makeup, I couldn’t afford any cosmetics," Asa replied.
She did not currently have a part-time job. She had survived entirely on the inheritance her parents had left behind, but there was not much of it. She had always lived frugally and barely managed to get by.
She felt that it would soon be time to consider getting a job, or perhaps she could simply earn money by hunting Devils.
Asa had heard that Devil Hunting was an extremely lucrative profession, though it also came with enormous danger.
"So the problem is that you don’t have money? That’s easy. Just ask that Asaba guy for some," Yoru said with a brazen, inexplicable confidence. "After this date, the two of you should naturally become boyfriend and girlfriend, right? Then you can ask him for money to buy makeup."
"Yoru, I don’t think the way you do. I don’t want to casually spend someone else’s money," Asa said seriously. "We killed that Bread Devil yesterday, didn’t we? I’ll talk to Asaba later about selling it on the black market. There should still be a decent amount left after we divide the money evenly."
"The question is, looking the way you do right now, can you really make him fall for you?" Yoru asked skeptically.
"That will be easy," Asa said calmly.
"Easy?"
"Of course. Men are simple. Praise them a little and make them happy, and they’ll fall for you immediately."
Asa spoke with considerable confidence.
In truth, she was trying to convince herself. Part of it came from genuine self-confidence, while the rest was an attempt to calm her nerves so she could face the date more comfortably.
"Is that so?"
"You’re a Devil, Yoru. Of course you wouldn’t understand."
"Hmph."
"Besides... I’m fairly cute. If I take the initiative a little, winning him over should be effortless."
Asa lightly brushed the bangs away from her forehead, a confident smile appearing on her face.
Yoru fell completely silent after hearing Asa’s declaration. She suddenly wondered whether Asa knew absolutely nothing about romance.
Yoru might have been a Devil who had only read a few romance novels and manga, but even she felt that Asa was treating love far too simply.
Still, if it really was that easy, all the better. She would not have to wait long.
In Tokyo, outside Tanashi Aquarium, a large sign displayed the words "Tanashi Aquarium."
Kotone and Asa met in front of the aquarium’s main entrance.
Asa was also carrying a bag.
Kotone Asaba wore an all-white outfit.
The two of them entered the aquarium together.
Kotone and Asa stood on the other side of a glass display, admiring the various kinds of marine life.
Before long, however, Asa began carrying out the plan she had prepared in advance.
"Sea anemones belong to the same phylum as jellyfish. They use their long, slender tentacles to paralyze and prey upon fish, shrimp, and marine plankton..."
Asa launched into an incredibly long lecture.
Kotone had no idea what to say.
He had already expected Asa to behave like this, but actually experiencing it still left him numb.
Still, Kotone decided to endure it for the time being.
However, he had underestimated Asa and overestimated himself.
Asa’s excruciatingly boring lecture continued without pause.
"Like sea urchins, starfish are echinoderms. There are approximately two thousand species of starfish in the world. Some are not even star-shaped, and certain species possess as many as thirty arms..."
By now, Asa had moved on to starfish.
Eventually, Kotone could no longer endure it.
"How about we go look at some other creatures? We’ve already spent a long time looking at the sea anemones and starfish."
"No. According to my plan, we still need to spend another half hour looking at the starfish. I carefully prepared this schedule so we could properly enjoy the aquarium. I absolutely refuse to do anything that isn’t part of the plan."
At times like this, Asa seemed like a completely different person. She showed none of the shyness or excitement normally expected from a boy and girl on their first date.
Then again, that was simply her personality. She was stubborn and old-fashioned.
"All right..."
Kotone had already lost most of his enthusiasm.
However, he had always known what kind of girl Asa was. He merely sighed inwardly and let her continue however she pleased.
Asaba should be starting to fall for me by now... Even an aquarium guide couldn’t give such an interesting explanation.
Asa confidently entertained that thought.
Yoru had already realized that something was wrong, so she peeked inside Asa’s mind to see what she was thinking.
After discovering Asa’s train of thought, Yoru immediately said, "It’s obvious that there’s no way this would make him fall for you."
"What? You’re just a Devil. What would you know?"
Asa immediately snapped back at her.
Yoru remained silent for a moment before saying, "Maybe I don’t understand humans very well, but I think you understand men even less than I do."
"And those explanations of yours aren’t just boring him. I’m bored too."
"If I were him, I probably would’ve abandoned you and left on my own a long time ago. I can’t believe he’s stayed here and endured this for so long. Either he has an incredibly good temper, he already likes you, or both."
"Could it be... that you’re simply this boring?"
Yoru’s words struck Asa like a devastating blow.
Asa’s expression immediately changed, and she clearly became angry.
"What? You and Asa, I mean, Asaba are the boring ones! I studied marine life thoroughly at the library!"
Fortunately, she was only arguing with Yoru inside her mind. Kotone did not notice the changes in her expression because Asa’s lecture had already made him question every decision that had led him here.
"My explanations are obviously interesting as long as you actually listen! You only fail to understand because you’re a Devil, Yoru! I haven’t done anything wrong!"
Asa’s argument with Yoru grew increasingly heated.
"That’s right. Asa hasn’t done anything wrong."
At that moment, a high school girl suddenly appeared beside Asa.
It was the Famine Devil.
"Mm... What?"
Asa jumped in surprise. She had not noticed when Fami had appeared beside her.
Kotone was naturally still nearby. He had been mentally drifting away, but he instantly returned to his senses.
However, Fami’s sudden arrival did not alarm him. He could guess what she intended to do next, and he was completely confident that he could handle it.
"War doesn’t understand anything. Asa is the one who’s right."
Fami tilted her head slightly to the left, causing the pair of scale-shaped earrings hanging from her ears to become uneven.
"However, you’re mistaken about one thing. You won’t be able to turn Asaba into a weapon, because..."
Before Fami could finish, Asa interrupted her.
"What do you mean...? I’m not trying to turn Asaba into a weapon."
Fami fell silent for a moment.
"Then why are you doing all this? Or did War not tell you?"
Hey, I’m standing right here...
Kotone was left speechless.
Who discussed turning someone into a weapon right in front of that person?
However, Kotone had no intention of interfering with Asa and Fami’s conversation. Listening to them discuss this was far more interesting than enduring Asa’s endless marine biology lecture.
"Tell me what?" Asa asked, still confused.
Fami fell silent again. She seemed to deliberately choose not to continue.
"Asa! Don’t listen to her nonsense! Take Asaba and leave!"
Yoru hurriedly urged Asa.
If her true objective was exposed, it would undoubtedly interfere greatly with her plans. More importantly, Chainsaw Man himself was standing right beside them.
The next moment, Fami removed the hat from her head.
As the hat fell, both Fami and Yoru vanished into thin air.
Fami’s sudden disappearance left Asa completely bewildered. Immediately afterward, she realized that Yoru was gone as well. She looked around but could not find Yoru anywhere.
"Yoru?!"
"Fami took her away," Kotone calmly explained.
A moment later, Fami’s voice came from an unknown location.
"I took War outside the aquarium, though only temporarily."
"Once they begin starving, any human will cast aside their sense of right and wrong. That’s why I created this stage for you."
"Turn Asaba into a weapon, and you’ll be able to leave the aquarium. Goodbye."
After those final words, Fami’s voice disappeared completely.
Asa still could not understand the situation. She had failed to comprehend most of what Fami had said.
Kotone, on the other hand, understood perfectly.
On the surface, Fami had claimed that Asa could only escape by turning him into a weapon. Her true objective, however, was to make Asa starve.
Because the War Devil shared everything with Asa, if Asa became hungry, War would suffer from hunger as well.
The Famine Devil could turn starving humans and Devils into her pawns. Her ultimate objective was to control War.
"Mitaka, please calm down."
Kotone calmly raised two fingers toward Asa.
"There are two things I need to tell you. First, the Eternity Devil has appeared inside the aquarium, preventing us from leaving normally."
"Second, whether or not you can turn me into a weapon is beside the point. You can turn the aquarium itself into a weapon, then use it to kill the Eternity Devil. That would solve everything perfectly."
Asa stared blankly at him before slowly nodding.
"How am I supposed to turn the aquarium into a weapon?" she asked.
At the same time, something else weighed heavily on her mind.
Fami had repeatedly mentioned turning Asaba into a weapon, but she had never properly explained what she meant.
Yoru’s behavior had also been unusual. She clearly did not want Asa to learn the truth.
That inevitably caused Asa to become suspicious. She remembered Yoru saying that her target was Chainsaw Man, and Asaba was the person Yoru referred to as Chainsaw Man.
Could Yoru intend to kill Chainsaw Man by turning him into a weapon?!
No... I can’t let that happen!
Asa immediately rejected the idea. How could she possibly stand by and watch Yoru kill Asaba?
Furthermore, she and Yoru were now one being. That meant it would effectively be Asa herself killing Asaba with her own hands, which was even more unbearable.
Asa anxiously thought through the situation. She soon realized that if Asaba fell in love with her, then the War Devil’s power really could turn him into a weapon, killing him in the process.
She absolutely did not want that.
Asa therefore came up with an idea. She would do the opposite and make Asaba hate her instead.
Being hated was still better than personally killing him.
Although Asa had guessed more than half of the truth, she had misunderstood Yoru’s real intentions.
The War Devil wanted to hold Kotone’s life in her hands. Even if he was transformed into a weapon, he could return to normal at any time as long as the weapon was not destroyed. Yoru planned to force him to vomit up the Nuclear Weapons Devil, then humiliate and torment him in every possible way to avenge herself for how he had crippled her.
"The method isn’t particularly difficult, but it isn’t exactly simple either," Kotone explained. "You’ll probably need one million yen. Then you can simply purchase the aquarium."
Kotone was essentially using his complete knowledge of events to guide Asa through the aquarium as quickly as possible.
