Chapter 239: Chapter 239: The Death Devil

With Reze’s reassurance, Kotone Asaba could finally put his mind at ease.

That night, Kotone slept soundly.

The next day, following the Time Devil’s "rewriting" of time, the day of the prophecy arrived.

Kotone stood atop a tower several hundred meters / over a thousand feet tall in Tokyo, looking down at the streams of vehicles and pedestrians moving below.

Although most people had gone to shelters, there were always some who refused to believe the warnings. After all, prophecies about the end of the world already sounded ridiculous enough, and the fact that the date had somehow been moved forward from 1999 to today made it sound even more absurd.

Yet everything before him seemed perfectly normal and peaceful.

It didn’t look anything like the day Nostradamus’s prophecy was supposed to come true.

Still, Kotone suspected that this was merely the calm before the storm.

Just then, something suddenly changed below.

"What is that...?!"

Kotone’s gaze sharpened, and his expression turned grave.

Above the head of every single person below floated a huge, pitch-black word:

"DEATH."

And beneath that word was a string of numbers that looked like... time?

"31 days, 06 hours, 24 minutes, 46 seconds."

"18,459 days, 08 hours, 32 minutes, 01 second."

"3,551 days, 14 hours, 56 minutes, 23 seconds."

"..."

The numbers changed with every passing second. Simply put, they were decreasing one second at a time.

Clearly, they were countdowns.

Combined with the word "DEATH," it wasn’t difficult to guess what they represented.

They were countdowns to the end of each person’s life.

And considering that today was the day Nostradamus’s prophecy was supposed to occur...

Kotone immediately began to understand.

He looked upward and discovered that he had one above his own head as well.

However, his displayed time was simply:

"∞"

That was probably because he was a Hybrid and therefore didn’t have a finite lifespan countdown.

"By all logic, a lot of people should die today... but judging by this, no one’s lifespan countdown seems to have been affected by Nostradamus’s prophecy."

Kotone swept his gaze across the streets below but couldn’t find a single person whose countdown would reach zero today.

Which meant...

These lifespan countdowns probably excluded whatever deaths would be caused by Nostradamus’s prophecy.

"So... is this the Great King of Terror’s ability?"

Kotone muttered to himself.

"That’s right."

Makima’s voice suddenly came from behind him.

"This is the power of our eldest sister, the Death Devil," Makima continued.

"The Death Devil...?"

Kotone froze for a moment, not immediately processing what she had said.

"Our eldest sister. Death. She’s the Great King of Terror. Understand now?"

Fami’s voice came next.

Makima and Fami walked over and stood on either side of Kotone, gazing down at the city just as he was.

"Although you ruined my original plan, our eldest sister descended unexpectedly early. Even if you hadn’t interfered, there would have been nothing I could do anymore."

Fami spoke indifferently.

"So the Death Devil really is the Great King of Terror..."

Kotone couldn’t help but marvel.

Still, the way they kept referring to her as their eldest sister...

So they really were the Four Horsewomen.

"Today, the Death Devil, who already possesses the most terrifying name of all, will become even stronger," Makima said calmly.

Kotone looked down and nodded slightly. "Yeah... I can see that."

The people below had gradually begun noticing the strange displays floating above their own heads and those of everyone around them.

Once they realized that the numbers were counting down to their deaths, panic and anxiety rapidly spread through the crowds.

The moment people began fearing "death," the Death Devil would inevitably grow stronger.

The next instant, everything changed completely!

Withered trees, cracked earth, dried-up rivers, vehicles reduced to rusting scrap, towering buildings collapsed into ruins...

Everything looked as though it had "died," and the transformation happened in a single instant.

Across all of Tokyo, perhaps even the entire world, everything except humanity itself seemed to have lost all vitality.

Surrounded by such an overwhelming atmosphere of death, people’s fear of dying grew deeper and deeper.

Kotone was stunned at first, but he quickly noticed something strange.

"This seems to be an illusion..."

With his powers of observation, he could tell that the clouds in the sky weren’t moving at all. They were completely still.

But the illusion was so realistic that whether it truly existed or not almost didn’t matter.

"So you’re that interesting human...?"

A completely unfamiliar voice suddenly reached his ears.

At the same time, a pair of slender, delicate fingers slipped around the back of Kotone’s neck.

There had been no sound whatsoever, and the movement was astonishingly fast. By the time Kotone realized what was happening, someone had already wrapped an arm around his neck from behind.

"!"

Kotone’s expression changed sharply, and he immediately activated phasing.

Then he turned his head.

A face was almost pressed against his own.

Her eyes had the same concentric rings as Makima’s and Fami’s. Her skin was deathly pale, her facial features exquisitely beautiful, and her long black hair cascaded downward until it nearly brushed the ground.

She wore a long, pitch-black dress, while her bare feet hovered slightly above the surface.

A faintly teasing smile played across her alluring lips.
