Chapter 65: Chapter 65: The Wildlife Park

After moving the Bread Devil’s corpse into the Kamui dimension, Kotone Asaba finally realized Reze had disappeared.

A moment later, Reze slowly walked out of the alley, acting as if nothing had happened.

"What were you doing just now?"

Kotone asked casually, though he did not actually expect Reze to answer.

"Someone was secretly taking pictures of us, so I went to deal with it."

Reze answered him.

"I see."

Kotone did not take the matter to heart.

He did not care whether anyone secretly photographed him or not.

He had already sensed that someone seemed to be taking pictures of him from the shadows, but he simply had not paid it any attention.

Two minutes after Kotone dealt with the Bread Devil, the private Devil Hunters arrived, but all they could see were the bloodstains and corrosion marks left behind by the Bread Devil. The Bread Devil’s corpse was nowhere to be found.

Kotone briefly explained the situation to the private Devil Hunters, then continued his patrol.

When he returned to Public Safety after getting off work that evening, Kotone handed the Bread Devil’s corpse directly over to Moscow Public Safety.

Moscow Public Safety would issue the bounty anyway, so there was no need for him to sell it elsewhere. Besides, he temporarily had no idea where the black market was around here.

Dinner that day was still at the recreation area, and after the meal, he played in the arcade for a while just like yesterday.

Kotone and Reze tried out some new games.

Although Reze’s Affinity did not increase again, seeing Reze having so much fun felt like enough to him.

Today was Kotone Asaba’s seventh day in the Soviet Union.

After spending so many days with Reze, Reze had never done anything harmful to him, but her Affinity had only increased by another five percent.

During this time, Pochita’s Affinity had also only increased by five percent, but their starting points were different. Pochita’s Affinity progress had already been at seventy percent, while Reze’s original Affinity had only been five percent. The higher the base, the harder it became to increase.

Reze Affinity +5%

Reze’s Affinity progress has reached 10%. Achievement reward obtained, Constitution +1.

That was the result of Kotone playing games with Reze every day. Her Affinity was extremely difficult to raise.

Speaking of which, although Reze was a weapon hybrid, the Codex judged her as human, because her personality was still completely her original human personality.

The Codex only divided targets into humans and devils. Humans and weapon hybrids were classified as human, while devils and Fiends were classified as devils.

That distinction existed because the extra rewards for maxing out Affinity with humans and devils were different. When a human target’s Affinity was maxed out, the extra reward was more Constitution. For a devil target, it was the other party’s ability.

As for Reze, her daily advances over the past few days had still been far from weak.

If Kotone had not known Reze’s identity perfectly well, he probably would have fallen for her attacks long ago. Even as things stood, he was having a hard time resisting, because Reze was genuinely too good at this.

Reze’s true objective was still impossible to determine for now, but one thing was certain. At the moment, Reze wanted to win him over first.

If Reze’s target was Pochita, which was also the most likely possibility, then unless she had no other choice, she would not try to snatch him by force. After all, she did not have absolute confidence, and with Reze’s combat style, a fight would also cause an enormous commotion.

If she was not going to take him by force, then naturally, she would charm Kotone until he was head over heels for her, then trick him into handing over Pochita.

However, Reze would never expect that Kotone did not need to be won over at all. From the very beginning, he had already had a very high opinion of Reze.

He did not need to be won over, but she also could not make him lose his head over her. After all, he was a transmigrator who knew the plot.

Kotone had no idea when Reze would be unable to hold back and attack directly, and he also could not think of any good solution.

He wanted to help Reze escape the Soviet military and live a normal, ordinary life.

Through the original story, and through his interactions with Reze over the past few days, he could tell that Reze actually longed for the life of an ordinary person.

For example, the serious expression she wore when playing games did not seem like an act. Also, the only time Reze’s Affinity had increased was when he had played games with her.

The reason was very simple. Reze had never played games before. Games that ordinary people could play whenever they wanted were something Reze only had the chance to experience in the middle of a mission.

But that longing for an ordinary life could only ever be hidden deep in her heart. From the moment she had been turned into a weapon hybrid, Reze had become a "guinea pig," a soldier devoted to her country.

If she dared to have any unnecessary thoughts, the Soviet military would inevitably punish her.

That was why Kotone wanted Reze to gain freedom, but facing the current Reze, he had no way to begin.

Reze’s Affinity toward him was still very low, so he could not make Reze trust him. Telling Reze these things directly would definitely be useless.

He also had no good way to actively increase Reze’s Affinity. Reze was very sharp, so if his actions were too deliberate, she would definitely become suspicious.

Because of that, Kotone only planned to let his relationship with Reze develop naturally. The Affinity increase while playing games had been very natural. At the time, he really had only been thinking about playing games.

Just then, a weight on his shoulder pulled Kotone out of his thoughts.

At the same time, he heard Reze’s voice.

"The destination is a little far, so let me sleep for a while first, okay?"

At the moment, Kotone and Reze were sitting on a long-distance bus, and the bus was currently on the road to a tourist destination.

That was right. They were going on a trip today, together with every member of Moscow Public Safety Team 1.

Moscow Public Safety organized one trip for every squad once every three months, but the travel time for each squad was separated.

That was to prevent a situation where a powerful devil suddenly needed to be hunted, only for all the Public Safety Devil Hunters to be traveling.

"You two sure seem close. Are you already dating?"

At that moment, a girl sitting in the same row, with a few freckles on her face and long brownish-blonde hair, saw Reze leaning on Kotone’s shoulder.

Naturally, this freckled girl was also a member of Team 1. Judging by her appearance, she was probably only in her early twenties.

Most Public Safety Devil Hunters were actually quite young, because they either died within a few years of joining Public Safety or quit and went private.

"No."

Kotone shook his head.

"Huh? You’re not?"

The freckled girl looked a little surprised.

The boy sitting beside the freckled girl immediately reacted too. He had originally been covering his face with a hat as if he were sleeping, though he had not actually fallen asleep yet. At that moment, he took the hat off his face and said, "Most couples aren’t even as close as you two, and you’re saying you’re not dating?"

By "close," he did not just mean what Reze was doing right now. Over the past few days, people at Public Safety had often seen all kinds of intimate interactions between Kotone and Reze. Quite a few people in Public Safety, himself included, already thought the two of them were dating.

That was why he was so surprised.

Kotone also knew this boy. He was also a member of Team 1 and the freckled girl’s younger brother. He also had a few freckles on his face, perhaps because of genetics.

The sister’s name was Funi, and the brother’s name was Nick.

"We’re really not yet, but we probably will be soon."

Reze also spoke up.

"I see... By the way, why did you two join Public Safety?"

Nick suddenly asked that question.

"I don’t have any special reason. I worked as a Devil Hunter in the private sector before, then joined Public Safety when I had the chance."

Kotone casually made up a reason.

"I’m the same as Kotone."

Reze was even more outrageous. She did not even bother making anything up.

Kotone had the urge to comment on that, but he held it in.

"What about you two?"

Kotone asked Nick and Funi in return.

"Us..."

Funi’s eyes immediately grew somewhat sorrowful. "Nick and I both did it to get revenge on the Gun Devil."

"Our family was killed by the Gun Devil. Only my sister and I survived. We became Devil Hunters to take down the Gun Devil."

Nick also explained.

"...Sorry. I made you remember something unpleasant."

Kotone could not help sighing quietly in his heart.

What he was sighing about was not the fact that this brother and sister’s family had been killed by the Gun Devil. He was sighing because this brother and sister had been kept completely in the dark the entire time.

It seemed the Soviet Union was the same as Japan, using people’s hatred for the Gun Devil to make them willingly help the government collect pieces of the Gun Devil’s flesh.

But thinking about it, that made sense. This was already a lie that covered the entire world. Ordinary people all over the world did not know the truth about the Gun Devil.

"It’s fine. We came to terms with it a long time ago."

Funi smiled.

Those things had already happened. After enough time passed, they had accepted them. The only thing she and her brother still could not let go of was the fact that the Gun Devil had not died yet.

She and her brother had relied on each other since childhood, and their motivation to keep living was revenge against the Gun Devil.

Although the two of them were not strong enough to do it on their own, they could do their best to help collect pieces of the Gun Devil’s flesh. Once the Gun Devil was found, everyone could work together to eliminate it.

Kotone remained silent. He could not speak about the truth of the Gun Devil.

In his heart, his true thoughts were that he did not want to judge whether it was good or bad for the major powers to keep the Gun Devil’s main body in their possession. It was like how he could not judge nuclear weapons either.

But he could not stand the way they kept everyone in the dark and even exploited them. Those Devil Hunters who were killed by devils died without ever knowing they had simply been used.

The bus arrived at a massive zoo. It was a safari park kept in a natural state.

This was Team 1’s travel destination for the day. They were touring the zoo directly by bus.

Generally speaking, apart from the parking lot, getting out of the vehicle inside the safari park was forbidden, whether for ordinary people or Devil Hunters.

This rule was not only to protect people, but also to protect the animals.

The fact that Devil Hunters had the ability to defend themselves did not mean they could act however they wanted.

"Kotone, what kind of animals do you like?"

Reze suddenly asked.

They had already arrived, but Reze was still leaning on Kotone’s shoulder.

"I like cats and dogs more, but obviously, you’re not going to see those in a place like this."

Kotone said.

This was a safari park. There would be no overly common pets like cats and dogs here.

"But there are other felines and canines here, like snow leopards, lynxes, foxes, and so on."

Reze said.

"The ones you mentioned are definitely nice too, but unfortunately, we can’t get out and pet them."

If he could only look and not pet them, Kotone felt there was not much point.

"But since Kotone likes cats and dogs, how about we go to a pet store and buy a puppy next time?"

Reze suggested.

"I think that works."

Kotone agreed.

Everyone inside the bus ate the snacks and drinks they had brought while enjoying the surrounding scenery. All kinds of wild animals could often be seen outside.

After spending half the day touring the safari park, the sun was about to set, and the bus prepared to leave the safari park and return to Moscow Public Safety the way it had come.

However, at that moment, a Wolf Devil several times taller than the bus blocked their path.

The Wolf Devil was like the Fox Devil, its entire body magnified many times beyond that of an ordinary wolf. Its appearance had become even more terrifying, and many eyes grew on its head.

The Wolf Devil was just thinking of having a feast when it caught the scent of the people inside the bus and realized something was wrong.

"Damn it! Why is the whole bus full of freaking Devil Hunters?!"

The Wolf Devil froze in disbelief, immediately tucked its tail and turned to run.

Everyone inside the bus was just preparing to get out and deal with the Wolf Devil, but the Wolf Devil had already tucked its tail and fled.

However, once a devil was discovered, it had to be dealt with. Otherwise, it would harm other tourists in the future.

"Don’t let it get away!"

Captain Volkov shouted.

The Wolf Devil ran very quickly. Ordinary Devil Hunters really would not have been able to catch up.

However, Kotone had teleportation, and in the blink of an eye, he caught up to the Wolf Devil.

Just as he raised Pochita and prepared to start sawing, the Wolf Devil immediately surrendered at top speed.

Its body curled up as it lay on the ground, its tail tucked between its legs. "I surrender! I surrender! Don’t kill me!"

"..."

Kotone was slightly surprised. This was the first time he had personally seen a devil voluntarily surrender. Then again, under normal circumstances, the devils he encountered were killed instantly before they even had the chance to surrender.

This time, the Wolf Devil surrendered both quickly and decisively. Otherwise, it would also have been instantly killed.

Since the Wolf Devil had surrendered, Kotone stopped.

Public Safety only had two ways of handling devils. Either they killed them, or they captured and used them.

Public Safety Devil Hunters generally formed contracts with devils captured by Public Safety, so if a devil was willing to obey, it was better to avoid killing it whenever possible. That way, it could strengthen their side’s combat power.

"Captain Volkov, it surrendered."

When Volkov and the others arrived, Kotone explained the situation.

"Then leave it to me. You all head back first. I’ll stay here and deal with this one."

Volkov said to the others.

The other members of Team 1 nodded one after another, then returned to the bus and left first for Moscow Public Safety.

After that, Volkov said to the Wolf Devil, "Make a contract with me first. I can avoid killing you, but you have to guarantee that you won’t hurt anyone on the way. This contract lasts until you’re locked up inside Public Safety."

"No problem!"

The Wolf Devil agreed without the slightest hesitation.

And so, the contract was established. The terms of the contract were exactly what Volkov had just said, meant to prevent any accidents during transport.

Then Volkov immediately contacted Moscow Public Safety headquarters and requested that Public Safety send people over to take the Wolf Devil back and lock it up.
