Chapter 66: Chapter 66: A Puppy Plushie

After returning from the wildlife park, Kotone Asaba and Reze went to a pet store the next day, planning to buy a pet dog.

It had been Reze’s suggestion while they were visiting the wildlife park yesterday, though he did not know whether she truly wanted a pet dog or had only said it casually.

Inside the pet store, there were kittens, puppies, birds, and all kinds of breeds. Kotone Asaba liked quite a few of them, but he only planned to buy one. After all, he already had Pochita, even if Pochita did not quite count as a pet dog.

It could also give Pochita a companion.

"Koto, you really came to a pet store to buy a puppy. Looks like you really like them," Reze teased.

"Weren’t you the one who brought it up first? I thought it sounded good, so here we are." Kotone Asaba said, "Enough of that. Which breed do you think is good? Pick one."

"That one. I think it’s called a Pomeranian."

Reze pointed at one of the dog cages.

"It is pretty nice."

Kotone Asaba decided to buy the Pomeranian. It looked small and cute, which suited his taste. More importantly, Reze was the one who had picked it.

"Dear customers, our store happens to be running a promotion today. If you buy a pet, you also receive a matching plush toy!"

The pet store employee said this to Kotone Asaba and Reze.

Then the employee brought over a small dog plush toy and gave it to Kotone Asaba.

Kotone Asaba had no real interest in plush toys, so he planned to give it to Reze.

"Do you like it? If you do, I’ll give it to you."

Kotone Asaba handed the little dog plush toy to Reze.

"I like it."

Reze smiled happily and accepted the plush toy.

Reze’s Affinity increased by five percent.

Seeing Reze’s Affinity rise, Kotone Asaba knew she really did like it.

Looking at it this way, Reze probably did genuinely like pet dogs too.

It seemed his decision to come to the pet store had been the right one. Reze herself probably had not expected that after she had casually mentioned it yesterday, he would actually come to a pet store today and buy a dog.

After that, Kotone Asaba bought some dog food and toys for the dog to play with.

He and Reze gave the Pomeranian a name, Nono.

After leaving the pet store, Kotone Asaba took Nono to a veterinary clinic for a full-body checkup. Only after finishing almost all the necessary preparations did he return home.

The first thing he did after getting home was introduce Pochita to the new family member.

"Pochita, this is Nono. If you’re interested, you can spend some time with it. If you’re not interested, that’s fine too."

However, it was obvious that Pochita was not interested in Nono. At most, he could get along with it normally.

After all, Pochita was still fundamentally a Devil. He did not have as many emotions as humans, and there was no way he would treat a pet dog as one of his own kind.

But Nono was more something Kotone Asaba had bought for Reze.

Reze had been the one to suggest going to a pet store. Nono had mainly been chosen by Reze too, and then there was her reaction toward the little dog plush toy.

For example, right now, Reze was using a toy to play with Nono.

On the third day after returning from the wildlife park, it was time to go back to work as usual.

In the morning, Reze personally made breakfast like always. After the two of them finished eating, they went to work, while Nono was kept in a dog cage to stop it from running around.

After arriving at Moscow Public Safety, they soon ran into Captain Volkov. It seemed Captain Volkov had been looking for Kotone Asaba and Reze for something.

"It is about time for you to start handling more difficult missions. There is a village in the Southern Administrative Okrug. According to reports, a Devil has been appearing there. Go investigate. If you discover a Devil, eliminate it on the spot. If you cannot handle it, request support from headquarters. Remember, do not overestimate yourselves."

Captain Volkov assigned Kotone Asaba a different mission.

"Understood."

Kotone Asaba accepted the mission.

Only he and Reze would be acting together on this mission. Although Reze definitely would not reveal her true strength, even if it were only Kotone Asaba by himself, there were not many missions that could actually give him trouble.

Afterward, Kotone Asaba and Reze headed together to that village in the Southern Administrative Okrug.

Since the village was very remote, he and Reze drove there themselves.

Of course, Reze was the one driving. Kotone Asaba did not have a driver’s license, so he could not drive.

Reze seemed like a seasoned driver. She drove fast and steadily. After all, agents were all-rounders. They only skipped skills that were useless.

After arriving at the village, Kotone Asaba and Reze got out of the car at the village entrance.

"Are you two Devil Hunters from Moscow Public Safety?"

Not long after walking into the village, Kotone Asaba and Reze encountered an elderly man.

"That’s right."

Kotone Asaba nodded.

"I knew it. I could tell from your uniforms. I am Zhelov, the village chief here. As village chief, I welcome you both to our village."

The old man spoke with a kindly expression.

Kotone Asaba had not expected to meet the village chief so quickly.

"We heard that a Devil may have appeared here, so we came to investigate. Chief Zhelov, is there any information you can provide?"

Kotone Asaba explained his purpose to Chief Zhelov.

"A Devil may have appeared? My son is a very strong Devil Hunter. The Devils that appeared in the village have already been dealt with by him, so our village is very safe now. You two may go back."

The smile on Chief Zhelov’s face looked a little strange, and what he said sounded like he was hiding something. That made it even more impossible for Kotone Asaba to leave just like that.

"I see. It does sound quite safe. But if we go back this quickly, it will be hard for us to report in. Just let us take a look around."

Kotone Asaba said this.

Chief Zhelov did not say anything else.

When he turned and left, a dark glint flashed in his eyes.

After that, Kotone Asaba prepared to randomly find a few households and ask about the situation.

At first, the villagers who received him and Reze were quite warm, but the moment he and Reze asked about anything related to Devils, those villagers’ faces would show a trace of fear and panic. Then they would drive them out.

It was the same after they contacted several households in a row.

No one would answer when asked for the specific reason. In any case, anything related to Devils seemed to be a taboo subject for the people of this village.

That confirmed for Kotone Asaba that there was something wrong with this village.

"You noticed it too, right? There’s something off about this village."

At that moment, Kotone Asaba said this to Reze.

In truth, he was just chatting with Reze casually because he was bored.

For Reze, who was an agent, resolving this matter would probably be extremely easy. However, Reze definitely would not take a matter like this seriously when it had no real meaning to her.

"It is very obvious. Chief Zhelov’s reaction was wrong earlier, and the reactions of these villagers are even stranger."

Reze speculated with a look of interest, "Do you think Chief Zhelov threatened these villagers and is deliberately trying to hide something from us Public Safety Devil Hunters?"

Reze was actually analyzing it seriously, which surprised Kotone Asaba a little.

It was probably because Reze was pretending so thoroughly that it had become real. The current Reze had to play the role of a Public Safety Devil Hunter properly and be his partner properly.

Of course, Kotone Asaba had also thought of everything Reze had just mentioned.

"What they’re hiding is definitely related to a Devil."

Kotone Asaba said, "The question is how to make progress. Do we force the villagers to talk? Or do we force Chief Zhelov to tell us the truth?"

Kotone Asaba was just thinking about this when he suddenly heard a little boy’s voice from behind him.

"Um... dressed like that, are you Public Safety Devil Hunters?"

The little boy asked timidly.

Kotone Asaba turned back and saw a ragged little boy. His clothes were thin and worn, his whole body was filthy, and he was skin and bones.

Fortunately, it was summer right now, not winter. Otherwise, with Moscow’s climate...

"Yes. Do you need something?"

Kotone Asaba said.

"Do you have any food? If you can give me something to eat, I can tell you what you want to know."

The little boy requested this.

"Such as?"

"Such as what Chief Zhelov told us to hide."

"Deal."

Kotone Asaba immediately accepted the little boy’s request.

Actually, even if the little boy had told him nothing, he still would have given him some food to fill his stomach.

At that moment, Kotone Asaba transferred some snacks out of the Kamui dimension.

He had stored quite a few snacks in the Kamui dimension. They were all prepared for Pochita.

"Huh?!"

These were all foods the little boy had never seen before, and they had appeared out of thin air. The little boy was instantly stunned with shock.

He had originally thought that getting a small piece of bread or a pancake from the other party would already be good enough. He had not expected to receive food he had never seen before. It looked like it would taste delicious too, and he had been given so much.

The packaging bags were covered in Japanese writing that the little boy could not understand, but from the appearance of the snacks, he could tell that they were probably very tasty.

"Can I really eat these?"

The little boy found it hard to believe and asked carefully.

"Go ahead. Eat until you’ve had enough, then tell me about those things."

Kotone Asaba rubbed the little boy’s head, not minding how dirty he was.

"Okay!"

The little boy immediately tore open the package impatiently. After taking one bite, his eyes widened at once.

He had never eaten anything this delicious before. Forget delicious food, he usually could not even fill his stomach.

Already starving, he immediately began wolfing the food down.

"Eat slowly. Don’t rush."

Kotone Asaba was afraid the little boy might choke, so he transferred a bottle of juice out of the Kamui dimension as well. After unscrewing the cap for him, he handed it to the little boy.

The little boy had only ever seen similar drink bottles before when rummaging through trash. He had once tasted the tiny bit left inside one of those bottles, and he had never forgotten that delicious flavor.

Today, he finally got to drink it again, and this time, it was a full bottle.

At that moment, Reze silently watched Kotone Asaba without saying a word, and no one knew what she was thinking.

Halfway through eating, the little boy realized that he was starting to take advantage of their kindness. He immediately stopped eating and began talking.

"Chief Zhelov warned everyone in the village a long time ago that we were not allowed to mention that matter to any outsider, especially not to Public Safety Devil Hunters."

"Tell me exactly what that matter is."

Kotone Asaba asked.

"Chief Zhelov made a contract with a Devil. I don’t know exactly what Devil it is. I only know that every once in a while, they have to offer a living person to that Devil, and that Devil gives Chief Zhelov’s son powerful strength in return."

The little boy said this.

"I see. Do you know where that Devil is?"

Kotone Asaba asked further.

The little boy shook his head. "I’m sorry, I don’t know. I only heard that the people chosen were personally taken away by Chief Zhelov. No one knows where he took them, and the people taken away never came back. They were probably eaten by the Devil."

"All right. I basically understand the situation now. Thank you."

Kotone Asaba said this.

"I should be the one thanking you. You let me eat so much delicious food."

The little boy said with a face that showed no regrets. "Actually, after telling you these things, I probably won’t live to see tomorrow. But right now, I feel like I have no regrets left. At least I can die with a full stomach, and everything I ate was delicious food I’d never had before."

"What’s your name?"

Kotone Asaba suddenly asked his name.

"My name is Ariko. Why?"

The little boy was a little confused. Why had this man suddenly asked his name?

"Then, Ariko, you are definitely going to live properly. Don’t worry so much."

Kotone Asaba placed both hands on Ariko’s shoulders, looked straight into his eyes, and said this.

Ariko froze for a moment, then nodded and said, "Okay. I believe you, mister!"

"Reze, I’ll have to trouble you to look after this child for a bit. I’m going to deal with this matter."

At that moment, Kotone Asaba said this to Reze.

He definitely would not leave Ariko alone, so he wanted to ask Reze to take care of him.

"Sure. Koto, be careful."

Reze smiled as she spoke.

"Ariko, you should know where Chief Zhelov’s house is, right?"

Kotone Asaba suspected that Chief Zhelov had hidden the Devil in his home. Of course, this was only a suspicion. He had to go to Chief Zhelov’s house and take a look before he could be sure.

"I know. It’s over there."

Ariko immediately raised his hand and pointed in a certain direction.

Kotone Asaba looked in the direction Ariko was pointing and saw several houses. He accurately identified one of them.

That was because Chief Zhelov was standing on the balcony of that house, and he could clearly see that Chief Zhelov was looking this way.

Even if Chief Zhelov could not hear what Ariko and Kotone Asaba had said, he would definitely become wary.

Kotone Asaba already had a plan in mind. First, he transferred himself into the Kamui dimension.

The sudden disappearance of the man startled Ariko.

"It’s fine. We’re Devil Hunters, after all. That’s just one of his abilities."

Reze, who was beside him, explained.

"Oh, right."

Ariko had nearly forgotten that Devil Hunters had all kinds of miraculous abilities.

"By the way, miss, what’s your relationship with that man from earlier?"

Ariko asked curiously.

What he wanted to ask about was naturally not something like being coworkers. Rather, there would be no need to ask about that at all.

"Oh my, what kind of relationship are we? I suppose we live together, eat together, and bathe together. What kind of relationship do you think that is, kiddo?"
