Chapter 67: Chapter 67: Reze’s True Mission
Living together, eating together, bathing together...
Ariko froze as he listened, his small face turning a little red.
Wasn’t that basically being married?
The kind man from earlier did not look that much older than him, yet he was already married so young.
From Ariko’s reaction, it was obvious he had misunderstood, but Reze showed no intention of explaining. Instead, she looked like she was thoroughly enjoying it.
At the same time, Kotone Asaba had already transferred himself near Chief Zhelov’s house. Staying in Chief Zhelov’s blind spot, he directly entered a state of phasing and slipped underground.
From beneath the earth, he observed whether a Devil was hidden inside Chief Zhelov’s home.
Before long, Kotone Asaba discovered signs of a Devil in the basement beneath Chief Zhelov’s house.
Human bones, flesh, and remains could be seen inside. The bodies looked as if they had been gnawed apart by wild beasts.
It was very obvious that Chief Zhelov had been bringing people here as offerings to the Devil.
As he went deeper into the basement, the torches on the walls provided a faint glimmer of light, and Kotone Asaba saw the Devil’s true form.
It was a huge Rat Devil, with rotten dark-purple skin, a foul stench spreading from its entire body, and two enormous scarlet eyes hiding a vicious gleam.
"The smell of a human...?"
The Rat Devil’s nose was extremely sensitive, and it immediately smelled Kotone Asaba’s scent. It could tell this was not the scent of Chief Zhelov or his family.
But it could not see where Kotone Asaba was at all.
Kotone Asaba walked out from inside a certain wall, and the Kamui in his left eye immediately twisted the Rat Devil’s neck.
The Rat Devil’s body struggled for a while, but soon lost all signs of life.
At the same time, Claire, who was reading a newspaper at home, suddenly sensed something. A look of disbelief instantly appeared on his face.
He was Chief Zhelov’s son, and also the strongest Devil Hunter in this village.
"My contract with the Rat Devil was severed. What the hell happened?!"
Claire cried out in disbelief.
"What?! Let’s hurry down and take a look!"
Zhelov’s expression changed as well, and he quickly went to the basement with Claire.
But when they arrived in the basement, they saw nothing. They did not see the Rat Devil, nor did they see whether anyone had broken in. They only saw what seemed to be the Rat Devil’s bloodstains on the ground.
Just as the two of them were panicking helplessly, Kotone Asaba suddenly appeared behind them, holding two daggers against their necks.
"I am a Devil Hunter from Moscow Public Safety. You are suspected of colluding with a Devil and murdering villagers. Surrender quietly."
Kotone Asaba warned Zhelov and Claire coldly.
Feeling the cold daggers pressed against their necks, neither Zhelov nor Claire dared to act recklessly. They obediently raised their hands.
They already had a pretty good idea of what had happened. The Rat Devil had probably been killed by this person, which was why the contract with the Rat Devil had suddenly been severed.
This was the first time they had witnessed just how powerful a Public Safety Devil Hunter could be. The Rat Devil was no ordinary Devil, yet this man had infiltrated this place without them noticing, and had even killed the Rat Devil.
Were Public Safety Devil Hunters really this terrifying?
Kotone Asaba directly used the rope in the basement to tie up Zhelov and Claire.
Then he went upstairs, preparing to subdue the rest of Chief Zhelov’s family.
Aside from Zhelov and his son Claire, there was also an old woman, a young woman, and two children.
The sudden appearance of a stranger like Kotone Asaba startled the four of them, who were almost completely defenseless. The young woman protected the two children behind her and looked at Kotone Asaba warily.
"I’m sorry for frightening you. I’m a Devil Hunter from Moscow Public Safety. Here are my credentials."
Kotone Asaba was not sure whether these four were informed participants, so he started with the normal procedure.
After hearing those words, the young woman seemed to understand something. She immediately closed her eyes and let out a deep breath, as if she had been released from something.
"Thank you, Mr. Devil Hunter. But my two children are innocent. I hope you can spare them."
The young woman pleaded.
The old woman sitting nearby in a wheelchair suddenly spoke. "My husband and son have already been captured by you, haven’t they?"
"Yes."
It seemed that this old woman and the young woman were both aware of the truth, while the two children were probably innocent. Because of that, Kotone Asaba did not say anything unnecessary, to avoid letting the two children hear something that might leave them with psychological trauma.
"Thank you. I mean... thank you for ending this tragedy."
There was not much expression on the old woman’s face as she said calmly, "Amitsika and I will cooperate with you properly. But my two grandsons truly know nothing."
The young woman held her two children tightly, tears streaming down her face.
She and the old woman naturally could not have been unaware of what Zhelov and Claire had done, but they had no way to stop them.
The only thing they could do was hide the truth from the two children as much as possible.
The two ignorant children had no idea what was happening. They only looked fearfully at Kotone Asaba in front of them.
Kotone Asaba did not say anything more. As long as these four behaved and did not cause trouble, he would not do anything to them.
What happened next had little to do with him. It should be handed over to the police.
After telling the four of them to stay obediently inside the house and not move, Kotone Asaba went outside and made a phone call to Captain Volkov.
"Captain Volkov, the mission you assigned us today has already been completed, but the situation is a little complicated..."
Kotone Asaba briefly told Captain Volkov about Chief Zhelov colluding with the Rat Devil, and specifically emphasized that Ariko had been a great help to him.
"All right. I will contact the police. Before the police arrive, I will have to trouble you to watch over things there."
Captain Volkov said this.
Soon, the police arrived and took Chief Zhelov’s entire family away for investigation.
With Captain Volkov’s help, Ariko was placed under the care of an orphanage.
After that, there was nothing more for Kotone Asaba to do. Once he killed the Rat Devil, his mission was already complete. He and Reze were currently on their way back to Moscow Public Safety.
"Koto, what kind of Devil was Chief Zhelov colluding with?"
While driving, Reze suddenly asked this.
"The Rat Devil."
Kotone Asaba answered.
"A rat..."
Reze seemed to speak with feeling. "The country mouse and the city mouse. Koto, which one do you like?"
Reze suddenly asking this question surprised Kotone Asaba a little.
"You’re talking about that Aesop fable, right?"
Kotone Asaba said.
"That’s right. Looks like Koto has read that fable too, so I don’t need to explain it."
Reze nodded.
The country mouse and city mouse that Reze was talking about were not simply mice, but a story from Aesop’s Fables.
The country mouse could live in peace, but could not eat the delicious food of the city. The city mouse ate well, but it might be killed by humans or cats, so its life was highly dangerous.
"To be honest, I don’t think either option is that good. Think of me as a special mouse. Whether I’m in the country or the city, there’s no way for me to live peacefully. And compared to eating delicious meals in the city, I still think freedom is better."
Kotone Asaba spoke his honest thoughts.
As a transmigrator, especially one who carried Pochita with him, even if his heart longed for the countryside, there was no way he could live a peaceful life.
Reze looked somewhat surprised by Kotone Asaba’s answer.
Because Kotone Asaba’s words had stirred something in Reze’s heart.
A special mouse, was that not also describing her?
She wanted to live peacefully like the country mouse, but because of her special identity, that was destined to be impossible.
As for freedom, to her, that was even more of a fantasy.
"Rather than choosing the country or the city, I think it’s better to rely on your own efforts to fight for freedom."
Kotone Asaba sighed with feeling.
To him, why did one have to choose between the country mouse and the city mouse?
Was it not possible to live peacefully while also enjoying delicious food?
Reze’s expression shifted slightly in shock. Then she mocked him, "That kind of thing is obviously impossible, right? How old are you, still having such childish dreams?"
"Why would it be impossible? I believe that with my abilities, I can definitely make it happen."
Kotone Asaba said calmly.
Reze parted her lips slightly, wanting to say something, but stopped herself.
She suddenly felt a little envious of Kotone Asaba. He had so much confidence, while she did not even dare to have such a thought.
Reze’s Affinity increased by five percent.
Reze’s Affinity progress has reached twenty percent. Achievement reward obtained, Constitution plus one.
Just then, a notification about Reze’s rising Affinity appeared before Kotone Asaba’s eyes.
Only then did he suddenly realize that perhaps what he had said just now had resonated with Reze a little.
After all, Reze’s identity perfectly matched the "special mouse" he had mentioned. She wanted freedom like an ordinary person, yet it was impossible for her to achieve it.
For the rest of the trip, Reze did not say another word.
However, Kotone Asaba gradually noticed that the route Reze was driving along was not quite right. This was not the route back to Moscow Public Safety. In fact, they were going farther and farther off course.
His expression did not change, and he said nothing. In his heart, he thought that sure enough, Reze was still going to make her move directly.
Then Reze drove to the outskirts and stopped the car on a stretch of grass.
The scenery here was beautiful, very suitable for lying on the grass, feeling the breeze, and enjoying the view.
Kotone Asaba and Reze got out of the car and looked together at the scenery before them.
At that moment, Reze suddenly said, "Hand Pochita over to me. I don’t want to hurt you, Koto."
Her tone was very gentle, as if she truly did not want to attack him.
Reze’s real target was indeed Pochita. It seemed the Soviet military really had already discovered that Pochita was actually the Chainsaw Devil’s heart.
"But I don’t want to hand Pochita over either."
There was not the slightest hint of surprise on Kotone Asaba’s face. After all, he had known long ago that Reze had approached him with a purpose.
This actually surprised Reze a little. "Koto, you’re not surprised at all?"
"A girl as beautiful as Miss Reze took the initiative to get close to me so eagerly. It would be stranger if there wasn’t something going on, right?"
Kotone Asaba casually found an excuse to fool her.
"That hurts. You suspected me just because of that? Couldn’t it be that I really like you, Koto?"
In truth, the reason Reze revealed her purpose so quickly at a time like this was because she felt like she was showing signs of falling for him.
She had not yet made Kotone Asaba fall for her. Instead, she was the one who was about to fall.
Because of that, she realized she could not keep dragging things out. It was time to settle things with Koto.
"Miss Reze, you’re an agent, aren’t you?"
Kotone Asaba deliberately guessed this while already knowing the answer.
"That’s right."
Reze did not deny it.
"But after spending so many days with Miss Reze, I feel like you’re more of a girl who longs for an ordinary person’s life."
Kotone Asaba said this.
"An ordinary person..."
Reze seemed to smile self-deprecatingly. "Koto, you still don’t understand anything. All of that was just my acting."
As someone who had already become a weapon human, and who was also under the control of the Soviet military, she was destined never to have an ordinary person’s life.
"No..."
I understand everything.
Kotone Asaba still did not say it out loud.
While Reze was not paying attention, Kotone Asaba placed one hand on her shoulder and immediately used the Kamui in his left eye to suck her into the Kamui dimension.
Reze’s reaction naturally was not slow, but once she had already been caught by the spatial vortex, it became extremely difficult to escape. Knowing she could not get away, she immediately reached for the bomb pin on her neck.
But before she could pull the pin and transform into a weapon human, she had already been transferred into the Kamui dimension.
Bang!
At that moment, Reze transformed into the Bomb Hybrid inside the Kamui dimension.
Her head turned into a torpedo-shaped Devil form. Her body wore an apron woven from dynamite sticks, her arms were wrapped in bomb fuses, and she wore only underwear on her lower body, leaving her long, fair, rounded legs completely uncovered.
Looking at this completely unfamiliar space, aside from some distant furniture and snacks, Reze was the only one there.
She looked around her surroundings, but she could not see Kotone Asaba anywhere.
"I still got careless. So this is the space inside Koto’s eyes."
Reze muttered to herself.
Of course, she knew about this ability of Kotone Asaba’s. There seemed to be a space inside his eyes, and he could freely store things in it. However, this was the first time she learned what this space actually looked like.
"That’s right. This is the space inside my eyes, a separate dimension completely cut off from the outside world, and one that is completely under my control."
At the same time he transferred Reze into the Kamui dimension, Kotone Asaba had already transferred Pochita out.
Right now, he was holding Pochita while talking to Reze inside the Kamui dimension.
Claiming it was completely under his control was actually just a bluff. Keeping Reze inside the Kamui dimension was actually disadvantageous to him, because Reze still had ways to attack.
For example, when he was phasing, any part of his body touched by an object would automatically be transferred into the Kamui dimension. If Reze, who was also inside the Kamui dimension, wanted to, she could attack those body parts.
Kotone Asaba was only trying to intimidate Reze a little, so their next conversation would be easier.
"You can’t do anything to me right now. Why don’t we have a proper talk?"
