Chapter 413: Chapter 411:Awakening
Silence. That’s all I could give in reply.
I was almost clenching my fists before remembering who was in my embrace.
Barely relaxing them, I opened my mouth, "Ho... how?"
How was it possible? My mother should have died after self-destructing to become a catalyst for creation. She refused. She made Terra, and even then, still refused? To the point she somehow incarnated into this world’s mother?
"My mother, Seraphina, was said to have had no special powers, no talent, no special bloodlines, nothing. How could the incarnation of Mother Chaos be that weak? Shaia..."
"Seraphina was the result of the dying wish of your mother to watch over you herself. A mother’s love, I guess I should call it."
"And how are you sure, Shaia? I’m not doubting you, but how could you be sure that Mother Seraphina and Mother Chaos were one and the same?"
"Because, my love, I could feel the same essence within them. And although Seraphina’s was barely there, I could still feel it. The two were the same."
A heavy feeling overcame me at those words. My head tilted upwards as I bit my lips hard enough to break them.
"Twice..." I forced out.
"You’re telling me, Shaia, that I had to watch Mother die twice over without being capable of doing anything?" The words tasted like foul liquor in my mouth. I was disgusted with myself.
"Don’t... don’t do that to yourself." A pair of arms pulled my face down as my eyes locked with Shaia’s.
"Of those two times, you were faced with powers far beyond what you could’ve handled. You couldn’t have done anything differently. Do not beat yourself up for it. I am sure Aunt Devouring, if anything, will be proud of the man you’re becoming. So don’t let guilt take away from that." Her words worked, if only a little, to alleviate the guilt within me.
But, "I’ll bring them back, Shaia. If not Mother in chaos, then Mother in Seraphina. I’ll bring her back, Shaia." I had to. To make up for being a screw-up. Yes, I couldn’t have done anything during the two times, but that hardly meant shit to me.
"I have to..." I just had to.
"And we will, my love. We’ll bring them back," Shaia replied.
I nodded as I gestured for her to go on.
"As I was saying, after we landed on the couple, I used the last remaining of my powers to manipulate fate and causality.
I had sealed most of your powers and even your outer-source bloodline myself, but I needed for it to look like the handiwork of someone else."
"Father... that was you?"
"Yes. I had manipulated the events to unfold after your mother took in. I made it so that after your birth, the sequence of events would lead to your father thinking he was the one to seal your bloodlines. I had no idea what bloodline this body would come with, but I hardly cared. I was on a timer, so I just sealed everything and carried on."
"Of course, I would be damned if I had let anyone else change the name I had come up with for you as well. If I had enough power, I would’ve done the same with Kyle, but alas..."
I could only shake my head at her words.
"Anyway, after I was done, I was on my last legs. Trying to manipulate fate and causality so precisely, after everything else I’d done, sealing an outer-source bloodline and origin, a chaos bloodline and origin, splitting a chaos being, things finally took their toll."
"I was almost at the verge of collapse, yet I still had one more thing to do. I needed someone to protect you while you were young. I needed someone powerful enough that others wouldn’t dare hurt you. So, I gave the very tiniest bit of my fading powers to your father, Regulus."
"Wait... you... you were the one to give Dad his powers?"
"Not all. He was already an impressive mortal, apparently, by this world’s standards. But everything else after that was me. The glimpse of a primordial concept, I allowed. Yet even then, fate seemed to be a very fickle mistress. No wonder everyone hates outer-source probability."
"Father was ambushed and killed," I spoke out.
"Indeed. Regulus was killed when Dante was just three. But as things would have it, a new guardian appeared just in time."
"Aunt V." A small smile graced my face.
"Yes. Your oh-so-lovely raven, humph!"
"Jealous much?"
"As I was saying..."
"Hahahahaha..." I couldn’t help laughing gently at her antics.
"Stop laughing!! Humph!"
"Fine... fine. I’ll stop. Go on."
"Humph! As I was saying, Raven appeared just in time to prevent my plans from being ruined."
"And you can guess the rest from then on..."
"I began training like crazy to get revenge, so much so that I died, huh?"
"Yes and no."
"Yes and no?"
"What I mean is, your training regime was right, but the reason you died isn’t."
"Huh? Didn’t I die from exhaustion?"
"No, you did not."
"What?"
"Dante. The reason this body died, or rather, fell into temporary stasis, was because the two souls, Kyle and this one, were finally ready to merge back together."
"Wait. Wait. So, I didn’t die because I trained too hard?"
"Oh, come on. What type of training do you think would be enough to actually kill you? Forget that you were born anew, at your core, you’re still Denying Chaos. The things that can kill you in this mortal plane are few to none."
"..." I couldn’t help being silent at that.
Was she telling me that all those "death battles" I had with some powerful foes where, though rare, I had actually felt close to death were just a ruse?
"Yes. That’s exactly what I’m telling you, my love. You were never in any true danger of death after you survived your infancy, so stop being dramatic."
I couldn’t help deflating at those words. There goes my whole "I trained like hell" backstory.
"Haa... so what spurred this merger on?" I pulled the story back on track.
"Teehee... well, of course it was your body’s awakening ceremony."
"My awakening?"
"Yes. The moment this body became primed for awakening, fate kicked in and your life as Kyle was promptly cut short,
the two souls finally fusing into one within the most optimal body, which was this one."
"I... see..." No wonder.
"You realize it now, don’t you?"
"Yes..." Despite brushing it off, one would’ve definitely called it weird how I’d so easily accepted all of what Dante was as me, when I was still thinking I was Kyle. So, it was because we were always one and the same, and had just finally become whole. No wonder the hate and rage had felt deeply personal, because it always was.
"I see..."
"Indeed. The two were always one, and it was your awakening that became the trigger."
"So, does that mean me awakening my shitty regeneration was part of the plan as well?"
"Shitty? Hehehe... did you just call the first talent you awakened shitty?"
"Well, that’s what you call an F-rank talent, no?"
"Oh, Dante, my love. You’re still looking at things from such a small angle."
"What do you mean?"
"What I mean is, how do you expect a tool made by mortals to decipher fully the weight of an origin belonging to a being of chaos?"
"You don’t mean..." My eyes slowly widened.
"Of course that’s what I’m saying. You were brought into existence as DenyingChaos. To reject and refuse had always been in you. But the tools of this world couldn’t possibly decipher such a thing that’s why you saw what you did."
"But the talent never truly did anything..."
"Well, that was because you were still incomplete. It wasn’t until the system I created activated that your true awakening began, and it all started with the activation of your title, Son of Chaos. That was when the true change began, for that was when DenyingChaos, SonofDevouringChaos, was brought back into the limelight."
