Chapter 423: Chapter 421:Make. Your. Choice.

The Dungeon of Eternal Grievance. Even the name sounded like something one wasn’t meant to escape from.

"So, you guys are essentially trapped here?" I asked.

"Something like that, pretty much." Momon shrugged. The old death knight didn’t even seem bothered in the slightest.

"And are you guys the only ones here? Or is it that all the beings in here are cosmic prisoners?"

"You guessed right, young lad. Every single being here is a prisoner." Omari sighed, shaking his head.

"Huh! But if this place were such a renowned structure, how did it end up on Terra? Shouldn’t it be guarded by this pillar you mentioned?"

"Well, I did mention that it was ONE of SEVEN pillars, did I not? What made you believe the pillars were peaceful with each other?"

"So the tower was damaged by another pillar?"

"Yep. The LifeTree wanted something that Penance had locked up within the tower, but Sana decided to play hardheaded and she was quickly reminded why those entities were called pillars," Omari began.

"Heh! If it weren’t for the timely intervention of Penance, this junk heap would’ve been turned to scrap metal a long while ago." Momon sneered, but I was already past listening to what they were talking about.

"Grandpa Omari, just now, did you just say LifeTree?" I had to ask, because there was no way my target had just been mentioned casually.

"Yes, I did, is there something wrong?"

"Grandpa Omari, what can you tell me about the LifeTree?" I asked, suddenly eager to know more about the LifeTree.

The first time I’d come across that name was when I’d just finished devouring that annoying Elowyn girl in the Monkey King inheritance. The system had explained back then that a LifeTree was the starting point of all life within a given universe. I had just finished being stumped by the reveal of Malachi wielding fragments of a primordial beast, something I was still going to address in time, but that wasn’t the issue at hand. I had decided back then on the spot that I’d bring back my parents after finding out that information, and with the revelations from Shaia recently? Yes, "I need to know what you know about the LifeTree." Because my system was talking about something universal, but these guys were talking about a cosmic pillar, surely they weren’t the same thing.

"Young lad, why the sudden interest in the LifeTree pillar?" Grandpa Omari asked.

"Grandpa Omari, I’ll be honest with you. I’m about to leave Terra very soon, as you’ve guessed, and my next target is the LifeTree of our universe. I plan on bringing back Mom and Dad, and it would seem the LifeTree would be the best thing for such an endeavor."

"Ahh... I see. But to do such a thing..." Omari shook his head. "The universal LifeTree isn’t so easily or casually approached, young lad."

"That is something for me to worry about, Grandpa Omari. Just please tell me, are the LifeTree I’m talking about and the pillar you mentioned the same or related by any means?"

"Omari, stop dawdling with the lad. You’re losing your edge, brother; don’t tell me this place is finally getting to you?" Momon grated.

"Little one, it’s as you’ve guessed. The universal LifeTrees are in fact, merely extensions of the LifeTree pillar. In a sense, the LifeTree pillar can be considered the governor of all life within the cosmos."

This...

"So does that mean I’ll need to get to this pillar first before I can bring back Mom and Dad?" I asked, agitated. Not at the fact that it’d be difficult to reach these so-called pillars, it wouldn’t, because no matter what they were, they would still forever be beneath me. No. I was agitated at the fact that I might have to waste more time before seeing my parents again.

M

"I don’t think so, little one." Luckily, Grandpa Momon cleared my fears in time. "I believe the universal LifeTree of Primus should do just fine, the only issue is getting to it."

"Getting to it? Heh! That’s not an issue at all, Grandpa Momon. I just need a lead and I’m good. As for the obstacles, well, let’s just say I already feel bad for any sorry son of a bitch that dares stop me."

"Bahahahahahahahahahaha!!! Spoken like a true man. Good. If it’s a lead you need, then that little girl should have one. She hates the LifeTree just as much as I hate that cowardly master of mine, so she shouldn’t have any issue with helping you out." The old knight laughed before pointing toward a door at the farthest edge of the floor.

"She’s probably already expecting you, so you can just make your way over there."

"And what about you two?" I asked, curious.

"Us? Well, we’ll just stay and serve our time till eternity takes us, I guess." The way old Momon spoke of spending eternity in this place...

"Old man, don’t you care about leaving this place?" I was truly curious.

"Leave? Heh! Little one, of course I dream of leaving this place. For a man like me, the absence of battle, of war, of death, it gnaws at my being every waking moment." His voice had gone shallow. "The glorious First Sword of Death. The immaculate First Rider of Death. We were our master’s harbingers. Whenever it was time for one to greet death, we were there. Be they scions of universal factions. Be they demons. Be they celestials. Once death came, our blades were there." Grandpa Momon had fallen into a nostalgic state.

"Ahh... the good old days, am I right, brother?" he asked, turning toward the silent Omari. He was nothing but a walking piece of death metal, but I could still feel the semblance of a melancholic smile in his tone of voice.

"Heh! Saying this to me now, are you trying to get this old man to embarrass himself before the young lad?" Omari shook his head helplessly, the motion causing audible clanks.

"Ahahahahahahahahaha!!! Not at all, brother. I just find it ironically amusing. The terrors of the night. The names that wrought fear to the hearts of all. Momon and Omari Du Mont. Yet look at us now? Stripped of our glory! Stripped of our pride! Stripped of our honor! All because we were too weak! All because someone meant to die had connections to someone that transcended death itself. Haa..." The old death knight sighed ruefully. "Oh, what a lament it is to be followers of a coward unbefitting of his status."

"Transcending death? Just because he bears the title of a pillar? He dares claim to transcend death? Falsehood!! No one, not one in existence, can transcend death. Death is final. Death is inevitable. Death is Absolute."

"Wrong." I cut the old death knight off there and then.

"Grandpa Momon, you’re wrong." My words drew the attention of the two old men. I could feel the confusion burning within those eyes.

"There is one that transcends death.

There is one that transcends even life.

I am he that cannot be measured, yet remains the impossible benchmark.

I am he that cannot be erased, yet erases others.

I am he that was, even before death.

I am he that was, even before life.

I am the one true transcendent. Beyond penance! Beyond life! Beyond death! Beyond Samsara! Beyond nothing! Beyond everything!

For in all of existence and beyond, only I. AM. ABSOLUTE.

And I give you this." I stretched forth my hand toward the two dumbfounded men.

"Give it to me. Your oaths. Your servitude. And I promise you a life of freedom unmatched.

A life of glory unmatched. A life of prestige unmatched.

Give me your servitude and I swear on my name..."

RUUUUMBLEEEEE!!!!!

"You shall bow your heads to the one and only being for the sole entirety of your existence, so what shall it be?

Eternal servitude.

Or.

Eternal rest.

Make. Your. Choice."

A/N: Anyone else loves when Dante gets like this? Cause I’ll admit, the bastard is pretty cool. Anyways...
