In the great hall of the Medicine Hall, a faint firelight flared, bathing the entire chamber in a glow like a cascading sunset. A young man stood before a Pill Furnace, his expression one of intense focus. His fingers moved in unison, and the flames within the furnace danced rhythmically to their motion. After a moment, a faint Pill Fragrance began to drift through the hall.
After another moment, the young man let out a sharp cry and slapped his palm against the Pill Furnace. The flames within erupted, carrying a smooth, round elixir into the air. In that instant, a tangible Pill Fragrance permeated the space, quickly filling the entire hall. The young man then made a beckoning gesture, and a still-warm, perfectly round elixir flew back into his hand. Gazing at the elixir in his palm, the young man smiled with satisfaction.
"Haha, not bad, Liu Yan! You've finally refined the Mind Capturing Pill! Although the Mind Capturing Pill is only a Fifth Grade Low Level elixir, it's still a Fifth Grade Elixir. This proves you have the skill of a Fifth Grade Alchemist!" an elder praised as he walked over to the young man named Liu Yan.
"This is all thanks to Hall Master Hong's guidance. Otherwise, it would have been impossible for me to refine this Soul Capturing Pill in such a short time!" Liu Yan said, cupping his fists toward the elder.
"Young Liu, you're being too modest. You are one of the top alchemy geniuses in our White Fox City. Even compared to the geniuses of the Human Race, you're just as good, if not better. It is your own Talent that is great; this old man merely played a supporting role!" Hearing this, the elder known as Hall Master Hong waved his hand and said.
"Hmph. Alchemists from the Human Race? They're nothing special. With my current Alchemy skills, I doubt I'd find a worthy opponent among the entire Human Race!" Liu Yan said, clenching his fists as a confident look flashed in his eyes.
"Ai, you can't get arrogant and complacent. The Human Race is, after all, naturally more gifted in Alchemy, and their geniuses emerge one after another. You still have a long road ahead of you," Hall Master Hong said in a heartfelt, serious tone.
"Is that so? The Alchemists of the Human Race are just a bunch of good-for-nothings. All they think about day in and day out is money and women, with no focus on Alchemy at all. They aren't a threat. In my opinion, it won't be long before our Demon Race's Medicine Hall surpasses the Human Race's Pill Hall!" Liu Yan said dismissively.
"You..." Seeing the arrogant Liu Yan, Hall Master Hong was about to say more, but just then, the main doors to the hall were pushed open. The stout woman walked in, leading Shen Haoran.
"Hall Master Hong, there is an Alchemist from the Human Race here who wishes to see you. He says he wants to purchase Spirit Medicine and is requesting your approval!" the stout woman said, seeking his instruction.
"An Alchemist from the Human Race?" Hearing the stout woman's request, Hall Master Hong and Liu Yan glanced at each other. Then he asked, "What grade is he?"
"Fourth Grade!" the stout woman answered truthfully.
"A Fourth Grade Alchemist?" Hall Master Hong nodded upon hearing her answer, but a look of disdain appeared in Liu Yan's eyes.
"Please show him in," Hall Master Hong said. The Human Race's Pill Hall and the Demon Race's Medicine Hall were originally one entity. Now that an Alchemist from the human Pill Hall—a Fourth Grade Alchemist at that—had come, Hall Master Hong, as the master of the White Fox City Medicine Hall, felt he should receive him personally.
Hearing Hall Master Hong's words, the stout woman went out and, a moment later, brought Shen Haoran in. When Hall Master Hong and Liu Yan saw Shen Haoran's young, almost boyish face, they were both taken aback. They were shocked. 'So young, and already a Fourth Grade Alchemist?'
"You're the Fourth Grade Alchemist from the Human Race?" Before Shen Haoran could even offer a greeting after walking to the center of the hall, Liu Yan strode right up to him and demanded.
"That's right," Shen Haoran replied, giving Liu Yan a strange look.
"Tsk, tsk. Not bad. Becoming a Fourth Grade Alchemist at such a young age, your Talent must be pretty good! I just wonder if you earned that Alchemist title with your own skill," Liu Yan said, sizing Shen Haoran up and clicking his tongue. Though his words sounded like praise, his tone was dripping with sarcasm.
Recognizing the sarcasm in Liu Yan's tone, Shen Haoran looked at the young man before him with some confusion. 'I'm sure I've never met this person before, so why is he so hostile, mocking me the second he sees me?'
"Thank you for the compliment. Are you the Hall Master of the Medicine Hall?" Shen Haoran chuckled and nodded, accepting Liu Yan's "praise" before asking softly.
"No, but I am Hall Master Hong's prized disciple. Are you looking for..." Liu Yan began to say with a proud expression, but before he could finish, Shen Haoran cut him off.
"Oh, so you're not Hall Master Hong? Then why are you wasting my time? Where is your Hall Master Hong?" Shen Haoran said bluntly. This Liu Yan clearly had no respect for him, so Shen Haoran saw no reason to be polite.
"You..." Hearing Shen Haoran's words, Liu Yan's expression instantly darkened, and he glared coldly at Shen Haoran.
"Young man, I am the Hall Master of the White Fox City Medicine Hall. My surname is Hong," Hall Master Hong said, quickly stepping forward to pull Liu Yan behind him when he saw the tense atmosphere.
"Hall Master Hong, is this how you treat your guests? Or is this just how rude the Demon Race's Medicine Hall is by nature?" Shen Haoran asked, looking at the elder with a cold voice.
"Please don't mind him, young man. My disciple is just a bit too blunt. I apologize on his behalf," Hall Master Hong said with an apologetic smile. After all, Liu Yan had been the one to start the provocation.
"Hall Master Hong, is there any need to bow your head to this brat? His identity as an Alchemist is still questionable. There isn't the slightest fluctuation of Spiritual Power from him. A kid without even a trace of Spiritual Power—can he really be an Alchemist? He probably just picked that Alchemist Badge up from somewhere!" Liu Yan said with a sneer, hearing Elder Hong apologize to the boy.
"Oh? Are you questioning my status as an Alchemist?" Shen Haoran said coolly, his eyes narrowing as he looked at Liu Yan.
"So what if I am? You say you're an Alchemist, and we're supposed to believe you? If you have any real skill, show us something convincing. The Alchemist Badge doesn't count—anyone could have stolen it!" Liu Yan said provocatively.
"You want to test me? Fine," Shen Haoran snorted, understanding the meaning behind Liu Yan's words. He then closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Seeing Shen Haoran's strange action, both Liu Yan and Hall Master Hong were a little confused.
After a moment, Shen Haoran opened his eyes and said faintly, "Someone was refining elixirs here earlier, weren't they? And it was a Fifth Grade Low Level Soul Capturing Pill, correct?"
Hearing Shen Haoran's words, Hall Master Hong and Liu Yan were stunned for a moment before nodding. "That's right. So what?"
"Do you want my critique? The person who refined it is an absolute waste. I doubt he even knows the first thing about Alchemy!" Shen Haoran said bluntly, his gaze drifting pointedly toward Liu Yan.
Hearing Shen Haoran's words, Liu Yan's face instantly turned black. He pointed at Shen Haoran and seethed, "Brat, what did you say? You have the guts to say that again?"
"I said, the person who refined this Soul Capturing Pill is an absolute waste!"
