Feng Li could do nothing about Shen Haoran’s decision. If Shen Haoran wasn’t going, he couldn’t very well force him. Besides, even if he wanted to, he lacked the strength to do so. He could only shake his head with a bitter smile. He had originally thought that with Shen Haoran this time, Burning Flame City could secure a good ranking in the Pill Emperor competition. But who could have predicted such an accident?
"Don’t worry, Hall Master Feng. I’ll do my best to return before the Pill Emperor competition. After all, I don’t want to give up on the Heaven and Earth Spirits either," Shen Haoran said, noticing Feng Li’s helpless expression. If he could help it, Shen Haoran certainly didn’t want to miss out on the Heaven and Earth Spirits. They were crucial for his Chaos Divine Body, and he was determined to obtain them, no matter the cost.
"Then I will wait for you here!" Feng Li’s expression brightened when he heard Shen Haoran’s words. As long as Shen Haoran was still willing, Burning Flame City had a chance.
Shen Haoran nodded lightly. He then gave Feng Li a few instructions, adding that Er Mao needed to recuperate here as well. Once he had finished, he headed out of Central City.
Meanwhile, in a dense forest more than fifty li outside Central City, the lush, green leaves blocked out the dazzling sun. Deprived of sunlight, the forest floor was dim. Beneath the shadowy canopy, a pair of bright eyes constantly scanned the surroundings, filled with vigilance.
A closer look would reveal that these eyes belonged to a young man. This young man was none other than Da Mao, who accompanied Lady Ya. He had his fair share of wounds, but compared to Er Mao, his injuries were relatively light. That was why he was able to stand guard here now.
After a long watch, seeing no movement in the surroundings, Da Mao heaved a long sigh of relief. He then carefully climbed down from the large tree and hurried toward a nearby cave.
"Da Mao, how is it out there?" Seeing him return, the people inside the cave asked worriedly. If Shen Haoran had been there, he would have recognized them as members of the Fox Race from White Fox City. However, their numbers had plummeted. Fewer than fifty remained, and almost all of them were injured. Several were even unconscious from severe wounds.
"We’re okay for now. This place is pretty well hidden. No one has found us," Da Mao whispered, wiping the sweat from his forehead. They had been on the run for over three months before finally finding this secluded cave in the dense forest. Now, they could finally catch their breath.
Hearing Da Mao’s words, everyone breathed a collective sigh of relief. They then sat down to tend to their wounds. Da Mao walked deeper into the cave and gently sat beside a woman.
This woman was none other than Lady Ya, the current leader of the Fox Race and the inheritor of the Nine-tailed White Fox Bloodline. Her face was deathly pale, but her lips had a purplish-black tinge, a clear sign of severe poisoning. Her body was covered in wounds, large and small, and blood had stained her snow-white robes red. She was unconscious, and her breathing was terrifyingly weak.
’I wonder how Er Mao is doing... Did he find any Spirit Medicine?’ Da Mao glanced at the unconscious Lady Ya and sighed heavily. Because Lady Ya had been poisoned, he and Er Mao had decided that one of them should go seek Spirit Medicine. That was why Er Mao had left. But he had been gone for five or six days now without a word, and the rest of the Fox Race was growing worried.
"It’s all our fault. We were too weak and dragged Lady Ya down. Otherwise, she would never have been so grievously injured!" an Elder of the Fox Race said, filled with self-reproach as he looked at the faintly breathing woman.
As the Elder finished speaking, looks of guilt appeared on the faces of the other Fox Race members. Lady Ya was only so injured because she had been protecting them. With her power, she could have easily escaped on her own.
"Don’t say that, Grandmaster Hu," Da Mao said, trying to console them. "We are all part of the Fox Race. As our Clan Leader, of course Lady Ya wouldn’t let us come to harm. I believe that even if she weren’t our leader, she would never abandon someone in need!"
Just as they were about to say more, a sudden noise from outside the cave made them all tense up instantly. They grabbed their weapons and formed a protective perimeter, shielding Lady Ya behind them.
"Who’s there? Show yourself!" Da Mao shouted, positioning himself at the very front. Though he was the youngest among them, with Lady Ya out of commission, he had to step up and take charge.
RUSTLE... RUSTLE... The only response was the sound of rustling leaves. A moment later, a dark figure appeared abruptly at the cave entrance. The harsh sunlight streaming in from behind silhouetted him, obscuring his face.
The instant the dark figure appeared, the Fox Race members launched their attacks. There was a password to enter the cave; this unannounced intruder had to be an enemy.
Beams of multi-colored Spiritual Power blasted toward the figure. But just as they were about to hit, they were effortlessly deflected. Then, a familiar voice reached their ears. "Don’t panic! It’s me."
Hearing this, Da Mao’s grim expression instantly transformed into one of joyous surprise. He knew that voice all too well. "Brother Haoran!" he cried out.
At the sound of Da Mao’s voice, the other Fox Race members immediately halted their attacks. They stared at the figure in astonishment as the memory of him single-handedly battling two Spirit Emperors in White Fox City surfaced in their minds.
Shen Haoran walked forward slowly, and soon everyone could see his familiar face. The tension that had gripped them instantly eased. They didn’t know why, but the moment they saw Shen Haoran, they felt an overwhelming sense of relief that surprised even themselves.
"Brother Haoran, how did you find us?" Da Mao asked as he rushed up to greet him.
In response to Da Mao’s question, Shen Haoran explained how he had run into Er Mao. He then looked over Da Mao and the other Fox Race members, his brow furrowing. He remembered their group numbering in the hundreds when they set out from White Fox City. Now, there were fewer than fifty left. The sight was truly tragic.
His gaze swept over the survivors, finally landing on Lady Ya, who lay silently at the back of the cave. When he saw her condition, an uncontrollable killing intent surged within him. Although he hadn’t known Lady Ya for long, he had been deeply moved by her kindness. To think that such a gentle person had been so cruelly attacked...
In a flash, Shen Haoran was by Lady Ya’s side. As his Spiritual Thought probed her body, his expression grew even darker.
"Golden Rat Race... White Tiger Race... I will never let you get away with this!" Shen Haoran’s voice, seeming to echo up from the depths of the Nine Netherworld, reverberated through the cave, long and slow to fade...
