Chapter 135: Chapter 135
Anna’s POV
Anna wasn’t just casually close to Lena. The two of them were seriously tight.
"Lena is Dominic’s mate. They’re doing fine right now." Daniel, like any smart beta, dodged the topic neatly. His boss’s love life wasn’t his business to judge.
Anna sucked in a sharp breath through her nose. "If they’re really doing that great, then why does he keep letting that she-wolf hang around? Every other week there’s some fresh messy drama with Eliza."
She took another drink. "The way I see it, he’s stringing along his new mate while still staying tangled up with his ex. Men are trash. Every. Single. One."
Daniel’s lips twitched slightly. Very wisely, he said nothing.
Anna was worked up and drained the rest of her drink in one go. She pointed at Daniel, though her finger missed by a bit. "You tell Dominic this—if he dares pull anything shady on Lena, I’ll make his life a living hell myself."
She had seriously drunk too much. Her eyelids drooped shut before she could fight it.
Lena’s POV
When Lena woke up, the first thing she felt was that she couldn’t breathe.
She sucked in air hard and snapped her eyes open, only to find Dominic’s face right there, so close it filled her entire view.
His thumb moved slowly across her lower lip, pressing lightly against the swollen skin. His eyes were dark with want.
"What the hell?" She shoved at his chest. "I almost suffocated."
"I wanted to kiss you. I was only going to do it once and stop." His hand slid to her chest, feeling the rapid beat of her heart. "Your heart’s racing. Want to keep going?"
She slapped his hand away. "Let go of me."
"No." He leaned in even closer, grabbed her wrist, and guided her hand down across his waist. "Lena..."
Her cheeks burned instantly. Even through the thin fabric, she could feel his hard, thick cock pressing against her palm.
He held her hand firmly, his fingers lacing through hers, making sure she felt every inch of what he was touching.
His other hand brushed over her lips. "I checked. The trash can was clean."
She stared at him, stunned. He had actually gone through her bathroom trash to make sure her period was over. This man seriously had no bottom line.
“I looked it up. Right after your period, intense exercise isn’t a great idea. So I won’t touch you.” He tightened his grip around my hand. “But you can touch me.”
She knew exactly what Dominic meant. She twisted her wrist, trying to pull free, but his fingers clamped down like steel.
“Dominic, are you serious?” Lena turned away, trying to shake him off. “Is that all you ever think about? Morning, noon, night, every single day?”
He let go.
She scrambled off the bed at once, putting space between them like her life depended on it.
From where he sat on the mattress, he looked up at her. His expression shifted, darkening in a way that made her chest tighten. Without a word, he got off the bed and walked out of the bedroom.
If she was reading this right, he was mad.
Seriously? Just because she wouldn’t do that?
He came back from the bathroom after washing his face and brushing his teeth, still silent the whole time. Then he opened the closet, grabbed some clothes, and left again. He changed in the guest room.
Lena drew in a deep breath and went to the doorway. When he came out, fully dressed, he passed right by her without even sparing her a glance. He put on his shoes and walked out.
The door clicked shut.
He was actually angry.
She had honestly never thought a man would genuinely get pissed over not getting touched first thing in the morning.
“Fine. Then don’t talk to me.” She was absolutely not apologizing.
She went back to bed. If he hadn’t kissed her awake earlier, she’d probably still be sleeping right now.
She shut her eyes. Forced them shut. The harder she tried to fall asleep, the more awake she felt.
She yanked the blanket over her head and lay there for five minutes. Then, annoyed beyond belief, she threw it off, kicked the mattress twice, got up, splashed water on her face, changed clothes, and walked out of the house.
No job to get to. No place to go. She stood on the sidewalk and suddenly realized she had nowhere to be.
Anna was probably still asleep. After the train wreck last night, she had to be wiped out. Great. I’ll go to her place.
She took a cab and knocked on Anna’s door.
Daniel was the one who opened the door.
Lena looked past him into the apartment, but Anna was nowhere in sight. Then she turned back to him. "Why are you here?"
"I ran into Anna last night. She’d been drinking." He paused, then added, "A lot. I was worried she’d feel awful this morning, so I made her some hangover soup. There’s porridge too, but she’s still asleep."
Lena nodded. Of course he had stayed.
"You came at the right time. I need to head over to the Alpha." He stepped aside to let her in. "When she wakes up, give her the soup first, then the porridge."
"Got it." She was still processing all that.
Daniel left. When the elevator doors slid shut, Lena finally snapped back to herself.
She walked inside and followed the warm smell into the kitchen. On the stove, a pot of porridge was still simmering. Next to it sat a bowl of hangover soup, and beside that, a plate of pan-fried egg cakes with pickled vegetables.
Daniel was the kind of partner most women would absolutely kill for. Quiet, thoughtful, never making a big show of it, just showing up and cooking without being asked. Total dream-guy material.
She went to check on Anna. Anna was sprawled facedown across the bed, skirt hiked up to her thighs, dead asleep like the world could end and she still wouldn’t notice.
Lena shook her head. Even with her partner right outside the door, Anna was sleeping like a college freshman after homecoming, zero grace, zero self-awareness.
She went back to the living room, switched on the TV, and waited.
Anna didn’t wake up until eleven.
She stumbled out at last, squinting, hair a complete mess, rubbing her eyes. "Why are you here?"
Lena had her feet up on the couch cushion. "Daniel made you hangover soup, porridge, and egg cakes. Go wash your face and eat something. I’ve been sitting here forever waiting for you to wake up so I could eat too."
Anna blinked. "Daniel made all that?"
"Your partner stayed up late cooking for you, slept on your couch, and only left for work this morning. You’re seriously lucky, you just haven’t realized it yet." Lena cracked open a seed between her teeth. "And by the way, his porridge is really good. Dominic makes better omelets, but Daniel’s porridge? It’s got that weirdly comforting vibe."
Anna picked up the bowl and sat down, sipping the soup slowly. With every mouthful, her expression softened a little more.
"He’s really good to me," she said quietly.
"Yeah." Lena rested her chin in her hand. "And you’re good to him too. He’d never say it out loud, but I can tell. You two really fit."
Anna lowered her gaze to the bowl in her hands. "I still can’t believe I ended up with someone so... grounded. After everything that happened in my family, I always felt like if I wanted anything good in my life, I’d have to fight tooth and nail for it. Then Daniel showed up, and he just... stayed."
"That’s how a partner should be."
She took another sip, her expression softening. "Yeah. I guess you’re right."
She sent Daniel a quick text to thank him, then finally looked up at Lena. "So why were you at my place this early on a weekday?"
Lena let out a quiet sigh. "Dominic’s mad at me."
Anna blinked. "What did you do?"
Lena parted her lips, then shut them again.
There was no way she could just blurt out that at seven in the morning, she’d turned Dominic down when he wanted her to jerk him off, and he’d stormed out like she owed him something.
"It’s... kind of complicated," she said at last.
Anna kept staring at her. "Wait, is it really that bad?"
