Chapter 140: Chapter 140
Lena’s POV
“We were talking about... having a pup.”
Lena sat curled up on the couch, arms wrapped around her knees. After ending the call, Dominic walked over and stopped in front of her. “Why didn’t you tell me about this?”
“I didn’t think it was worth bringing up.”
Their relationship wasn’t solid enough for a conversation like that. Having a pup? Right now? Seriously, who would think that was a good idea?
Dominic clearly remembered how, after their first time, she’d rushed out to buy emergency contraception like her life depended on it. She really, truly did not want to get pregnant.
“If you actually got pregnant, would you keep it?”
“No.” Her answer came out sharp and firm. “Dominic, having a pup should happen between two people who love each other, and only when they’re actually ready. That’s bare minimum.”
“If the pup was conceived in the moment, then it was wanted in that moment. Doesn’t that count?”
She rolled her eyes so hard it almost hurt. “No, that’s called being irresponsible.”
“Planning pregnancy down to exact dates on a calendar makes it feel like checking off a task list,” he shot back, face unreadable.
Lena stared at him, drew in a deep breath, and forced herself not to lose it on the spot.
He just stood there, cool as ever, calm to an almost infuriating degree, like this was another business negotiation and not a conversation about a child.
“A pup is part of someone’s life plan. If one suddenly happened out of nowhere, my whole life would blow up.” She didn’t back down an inch.
“It wouldn’t blow up. If a pup came, we’d raise it. We can afford that, and we’d take good care of it.”
She grabbed the glass and finished the water in one go.
But she still couldn’t relax. Not even a little. “You’re missing the point. Raising a pup isn’t just about money. It’s not just food, clothes, and a roof. It’s emotional presence. It’s being there.”
Dominic poured himself a glass of water and leaned against the table. “Our relationship is stable. There’s nothing wrong with it.”
“Stable?” She lifted a brow, her voice edged with disbelief. “Did you forget this started with a contract that had zero feelings in it? Even couples who are deeply in love usually don’t decide to have a pup before they’ve even been together a year. And us? We’re not even a real couple.”
She couldn’t just let it go. She could tell he wasn’t against the idea at all. If she gave him the slightest opening, he’d probably get her pregnant within a month.
Dominic thought she was overthinking it. "Having pups can make two people closer."
Lena honestly couldn’t believe that had come out of his mouth. "If a relationship is shaky to begin with, pups don’t fix it. They just tie two miserable people together. That kind of life is suffocating. No joy, no warmth. The family falls apart, and the pups grow up in a mess. You really think that’s okay?"
"And if things do fall apart, the ones who suffer most are the pups." Her voice went tight. She would never let that happen.
Sensing her emotions rising, he backed off a little. "We’re only talking in theory right now. Nobody’s deciding anything today. If you don’t want pups, I’ll respect that."
She shut her eyes, drew in a long breath, then opened them again. "If this arrangement keeps going as it is, I don’t want pups for at least five years."
He went quiet for a second, thinking it over, then nodded. "Alright."
Only then did she finally loosen up. Watching the tension leave her shoulders, he smiled. "I kinda thought every she-wolf wanted pups sooner rather than later."
"That’s your assumption."
"I’ll handle my mom. If she brings it up again, tell me."
"Fine."
Even after that argument, he had dealt with Celeste’s pressure pretty well. He hadn’t hesitated to take her side. For that, Lena was genuinely grateful.
"Why are you back so early?" she asked.
"To take you to dinner."
She lifted a brow.
"Good thing we didn’t keep fighting. Samuel and the others are already waiting." He grabbed his coat and reached for her hand.
She looked down at what she was wearing. "Let me change first."
"I’m coming with you."
She shot him a hard glare, and he stopped.
She took two steps toward the bedroom, then turned around. Sure enough, he was right behind her, grinning like he had zero shame.
She pointed at him. "Don’t follow me."
He lifted both hands. "I won’t."
Lena changed fast, yanked the door open, and found Dominic still standing in the hallway. His eyes slid over her body, raw and obvious, the kind of desire that might as well have been stamped across his forehead.
"Actually, Samuel went to the airport to pick someone up. We’ve still got a little time."
She had just opened her mouth to argue when he caught her hand and started pulling her back toward the bedroom.
Samuel’s POV
Samuel stood in the arrivals hall, staring down the corridor, eyes fixed on the steady stream of passengers coming out one after another.
He had checked the time so many times it was getting ridiculous. Then his phone suddenly buzzed.
"Samuel, I’m almost out," a soft voice said from the other end.
He swallowed hard. Before he could even answer, he saw her.
She was holding her phone, glancing around, clearly trying to spot him in the crowd.
"I see you." He lifted a hand and waved.
Alia Mercer saw him and waved back right away.
"Samuel, I’m sorry. My flight was delayed." She stopped in front of him, looking a little flustered, apology written all over her face.
He waved it off. "It’s fine."
She had come back for her cousin. When Stonewall Pack ran into trouble, she had returned without a second thought. Stonewall Pack had helped fund her education and supported the years of training she received with a pack in another territory.
And now Stonewall Pack was sinking, so she dropped everything and came back to help.
"What you told me on the phone made sense, all of it. But I still don’t know how to handle this. Maybe I need you to guide me." Alia was doing this out of pure loyalty and good intentions. As for what exactly to do next, she was still kind of lost.
"Let me take your bag."
"No, it’s okay. I’ve got it." She shook her head.
Even so, he reached over and took the pink suitcase from her hand.
She blinked, then agreed. "Thank you."
"I’ve already set up dinner tonight with Alpha Dominic and Lena. Once we get there, just follow my lead."
Samuel kept his instructions short and clear, and Alia gave him a serious nod.
In the car, her hands stayed locked on her knees, her whole body stiff with nerves.
She had been away from this territory for years. Everything felt familiar, but also weirdly distant, like a place from an old dream.
While she wasn’t paying attention, he stole a glance at her.
Her hair was cut to her jawline, neat and soft. Her bright eyes were clear as glass, her nose small and delicate, her lips gentle. She wore a pink blouse with white slacks, clean lines, simple and sharp.
She was too tense to notice he was studying her.
"Alpha Samuel, are you sure we shouldn’t bring my cousin?" she asked, still unsure.
"I really don’t think we should. If Garrett shows up, this turns into a sales pitch. For a first meeting, that’ll make it feel way too much like a business deal."
She thought it over, then accepted his suggestion.
"Just show up tonight. Let Lena get to know you a little. If dinner goes well, the rest will fall into place naturally." He paused, then added, "Relax. It’s just dinner."
"Right. Just dinner." She nodded quickly.
She already knew Alpha Dominic had a partner. Samuel had told her that Lena and Dominic were solid together, so there was nothing to stress over on that front.
When they arrived at the restaurant, Samuel stepped out first. She followed behind him, took a deep breath, and straightened her shoulders.
He smiled.
Alia immediately blushed, caught totally off guard.
"You don’t need to gear up like you’re heading into battle. They’re good people." He adjusted his glasses. "Besides, you and Luna Lena went to the same university. That’s already a connection no one else at that table can match."
Alia bit her lip. "That was years ago. And we never actually met..."
He understood why she was worried.
"You asked me to keep you hidden in that room." He looked straight into her eyes. "I promised I’d help, and I keep my word. You are my..."
Aria held her breath. Her eyes went wide as she stared at me.
I let the silence hang there for a second, then gave her a mild, innocent smile. "What? You’re my... ace. That’s all. My ace."
She let out a sharp breath like she’d been holding it forever, and her shoulders instantly sagged.
She’d clearly read something into that tiny pause that wasn’t really there. Or maybe... yeah, maybe it was.
We walked in. Daniel was already in the booth by himself.
"Where are they?" I asked.
"Not here yet."
I pinched the bridge of my nose. "Dominic is seriously such an animal."
The second I said it, Dominic walked in, holding Lena’s hand.
"Who are you talking trash about?" He shot me a sideways look, then led Lena to the seats at the end of the table and sat down.
