Chapter 141: Chapter 141

Lena’s POV

She’d heard what Samuel said too. He wasn’t wrong. Dominic was basically a beast.

They were short on time, but Dominic had shown zero mercy. For one split second, she had seriously thought he might kill her.

"Speak of the devil," Samuel said, looking at Dominic as he walked in. He’d clearly just showered, smelled ridiculously good, and wore that smug, fully-satisfied look like life had just done him a favor. "You look insanely refreshed."

Dominic was in way too good a mood to care.

That was when Lena noticed the girl standing behind Samuel. She looked nervous, her hands clasped tight in front of her chest. "Samuel, who’s this?"

"Let me introduce you. This is Aria Mercer." Samuel turned to her. "She went to the same college as you."

"The same college?" Lena looked Aria over. She seemed so young, like she should still be in school. "She looks really young. I honestly thought she was your little sister."

"She might as well be." Samuel shot Aria a glance and smiled. "Right?"

Aria nodded.

"Then stop calling me ’Alpha Samuel.’" He tipped his head toward her. "Just call me Sam."

Aria blinked, then parted her lips. Her voice came out soft and light. "...Sam."

Samuel’s throat bobbed. He picked up his glass of water and drained it in one go.

Daniel sat back in his chair like none of this had anything to do with him. He had Anna. This was not his circus.

Lena had seen the way Samuel acted around Aria. He had that smile on, casually pulling her along step by step, and Aria was so nervous she didn’t even seem to realize it.

She had known Samuel for ages, and not once, not a single time, had he brought a she-wolf to meet them.

Aria sat beside Samuel, trying hard to look relaxed, and failing badly.

For someone her age, the whole room had to feel suffocating. There was an alpha, his mate, a beta, and then Samuel—whose charm alone could hit like a weapon.

Lena moved to the seat beside Aria and asked her about school.

They got talking. A few minutes later, Lena realized they hadn’t actually gone to the same school at all. The names were similar, sure, but they were in completely different places.

Samuel froze. "...What a coincidence."

I looked straight at him. "Or maybe, a mistake."

He nudged his glasses up the bridge of his nose and smiled like he had zero shame. "Fate works in mysterious ways."

The whole dinner table went dead quiet.

Aria shifted in her seat, obviously uneasy. If she and Samuel weren’t connected through the exchange program, then Lena really had no reason to help.

I didn’t leave. I stayed beside Aria and kept talking to her.

She’d been living in some far-off territory for years, only coming back once or twice a year for short visits. The more we talked, the clearer she became—open, honest, basically impossible to misread.

No scheming. No fake act. No hidden agenda.

I honestly had no clue where Samuel had found a girl like her.

After a while, Aria finally loosened up. Her smile came easier, brighter. She started asking questions too, and the nervous edge faded bit by bit.

Every now and then, Samuel glanced at her. When she smiled, her eyes lit up—clear and bright, without that jaded, seen-it-all look so many people their age already wore.

She was nothing like me. There was something about Aria that made people want to shield her, like she should be kept far away from every ugly thing in the world.

Samuel’s POV

After dinner, Dominic stepped out onto the balcony. I followed him.

"So this is the real reason you kept pushing for the Stonewall Pack." The second he heard Aria’s last name, he got it.

I pulled out two cigarettes and handed him one. He took it, but didn’t light it.

"Stonewall Pack is still a safe investment." I lit mine, then turned and leaned back against the railing, looking inside through the glass door.

Lena and Aria were still talking, heads bent close together. Aria looked like she was laughing at something.

"I’ll do another evaluation."

I took a drag. "Your money. Your call."

“How long have you liked her?”

Samuel could’ve dodged the question, could’ve played it off, but in the end he answered anyway. “A long time. So long I can’t even remember what year it started.”

Dominic Voss lifted a brow.

“Can you keep her here?”

Samuel had a cigarette between his lips. “I have to.”

Dinner was over. Daniel went to get the car, and Dominic and Lena Foster headed out first. Samuel was the one driving Aria Mercer home.

He hadn’t even had the chance to say anything when her phone rang. The ringtone was bright and soft, weirdly cheerful in the quiet car. She glanced at the screen, and the look on her face turned gentle right away, like ice melting into warm water. Then she picked up.

“Yeah, I’ve met them already... I know, don’t worry about me... I’m in the car. Sam’s taking me home... okay, we’ll talk later. Bye.”

She ended the call. Samuel kept his eyes fixed on the road, not daring to look at her for too long. “Your family?”

A blush spread across her cheeks. “No. My boyfriend.”

His hands locked around the steering wheel.

For one split second, he almost lost it.

Almost.

He forced a smile, the kind that looked fine on the outside and felt like glass in his throat. “Sounds like he really cares about you.”

After dropping her off at home, Samuel didn’t go back to his own place. He drove straight to Dominic’s apartment instead.

They had just showered. Lena, already in pajamas, opened the door for him. She took one look at his face and didn’t ask a single question.

“I ordered food for you two. There’s beer in the fridge.” She pulled out some snacks and set them on the table, then turned toward the bedroom. “I’m going to sleep. You guys talk.”

The bedroom door closed behind her.

Samuel took off his glasses, cracked open a can of beer, and drained it in one go.

Dominic sat down beside him without saying anything.

Samuel kept drinking, one can after another, like he was trying to drown the noise in his own head. By the sixth can, Dominic finally spoke.

“She has a boyfriend?”

Samuel’s hand froze. “How did you know?”

"You just met the she-wolf you’ve been hung up on for years. You should be over the moon right now, and instead you’re sprawled on my couch, drunk out of your mind." Dominic Voss leaned back, arms folded across his chest. "Only one thing turns a guy into this kind of mess."

Samuel Clarke lowered the beer can and stared up at the ceiling.

Back in that car, he’d forced himself to smile and tell her that her boyfriend really cared about her. Just thinking about those words coming out of his own mouth made his chest feel like it was caving in.

"So what are you gonna do?"

"If I knew that, do you really think I’d still be sitting here?"

"There are two options. Bury what you feel, walk away, and let her be happy." Dominic studied his face. "Or take her with you."

Samuel’s eyes snapped toward him.

Dominic frowned. "Wait. Are you actually thinking about that?"

"You brought it up first."

Dominic shot him a cold look. "She’s not into you. So what’s the point? Love has its own timing. Before you, somebody else already got there first."

The words hit like needles, sharp and ugly.

Dominic glanced at the time. "Go home. Think it through. Either let go or keep chasing."

"I’m not leaving."

"Fine. Then drink by yourself. Food’s almost here, go get the door." He stood up. "Keep it down. We’re going to sleep."

Samuel stayed where he was, empty beer cans scattered all around him. He turned and looked at the door after it shut. "Then you two keep it down too. Don’t ruin my buzz."

No answer came.

He didn’t leave their place. He stretched out, still wearing his glasses, and drifted off.

Early the next morning, the sound of footsteps woke him. Dominic was standing in front of him, fully dressed and neat as ever. "This is a disaster. Clean it up."

Samuel fumbled around for his glasses, shoved them back on, and pushed himself upright. His head was pounding like crazy. The coffee table was a total wreck: empty cans, half-eaten takeout, napkins everywhere.

He stuffed everything into a bag, then got to his feet. "I’m heading out."

Dominic was already in the kitchen making breakfast. He didn’t even look at him.

Samuel walked out alone.
