Chapter 43: Chapter 43

Daniel’s POV

I couldn’t describe what I felt after Lena finished speaking.

Anna hadn’t meant to hurt me. She told me she was going home to visit her parents. She said her father was sick and that she needed to be by his side.

She never mentioned Alpha. Never mentioned the arranged marriage. It was as if everything was fine. She did it because she thought she was protecting me—and that only made it worse.

My grip on the steering wheel tightened until my knuckles cracked. The highway stretched dark and empty before me, and I pushed the speedometer to its limit.

Five and a half hours later, I reached her parents’ estate. Their house stood at the end of a gravel road, bordered by a low fence, the porch light flickering unevenly.

I killed the engine and stepped out as a wave of cold rushed over me. I took a deep breath, steadying my heartbeat, then knocked.

Heavy footsteps sounded from inside. The lock turned.

But it wasn’t Anna’s parents who opened the door—it was her. And seeing her tore my heart apart.

Her eyes were red and swollen, her hair a mess. She wore an oversized sweater—one I recognized as mine, the one she’d taken from my closet weeks ago, still faintly carrying my scent.

"Daniel?" My name left her lips in a whisper. Her fingers clutched the doorframe, knuckles white. "What are you doing here?"

Anger burned in my throat. I wanted to demand why she lied, but standing before her, seeing the exhaustion on her face, the raw redness in her eyes—all the words evaporated.

"Lena told me everything."

Anna’s eyes flew wide, then squeezed shut. Tears spilled down her cheeks as she pressed her hands to her mouth, shaking her head. "I told her not to say anything. I told her I could handle it—"

"You can’t handle it." I stepped closer. "You’re locked in your house crying alone, telling your best friend not to come for you. But you told me nothing. You lied to me, Anna."

Her hand fell away from her mouth, dropping limply to her side as she lifted her gaze to meet mine. Her swollen eyes brimmed with guilt, exhaustion, and a despair so profound it wrenched my heart.

"I don’t want to be a burden to you," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "You have responsibilities—I don’t want you to give them up for me."

"You’re not a burden." I gripped her shoulders, forcing her to hold my gaze. "You’re my mate. Do you understand what that means? It means your battles are mine. If anyone tries to take you from me, I won’t let them."

Cupping her face in my hands, I pushed her back against the doorframe and kissed her.

A sound escaped her lips—something between a gasp and a sob—as our mouths collided.

I kicked the door shut behind us. She clutched at my coat, I yanked at her sweater, and we stumbled down the hallway, lips locked, her back bumping against walls and doorframes until I guided her toward the bedroom at the end of the hall.

We fell onto the bed, and I buried my face in the curve of her neck, inhaling her scent greedily. She arched against me, nails raking down my back, legs wrapping around my waist.

She reached down to unbuckle my belt. The metallic clink of the buckle was stark in the quiet room. As the zipper slid down, my cock sprang free from the waistband of my boxers, already glistening at the tip under the dim light.

She glanced up at me, her eyes dark with that familiar, wicked possessiveness.

"Come inside," she murmured, her hand guiding me to her entrance. "Come inside, Daniel. I’ve missed you so much."

I studied her—flushed cheeks, hair splayed across the pillow, eyes shimmering with unshed tears.

The moment the tip of me pressed in, her walls clenched around me—hot, wet, so tight it sent a jolt through my spine. She let out a muffled whimper, her nails digging into my back.

Her body enveloped me in waves, as if something inside her was pulling me deeper. Bracing above her, I could feel the faint tremors in the muscles of her abdomen beneath me.

When I was fully sheathed, she stiffened for a heartbeat before exhaling slowly, her legs tightening around my waist, ankles locking at the small of my back.

I kissed her neck, her shoulders, the soft skin between her breasts. The scent of her body wash mingled with her own musky sweetness, intoxicating. I buried my face in the crook of her neck and breathed her in.

She writhed beneath me, letting out a breathy moan as she arched her hips upward.

"Anna," I growled, my voice rough. "Stay still. Let me do this."

"No." She wrapped her arms around my neck, clinging to me. "I want you to. Harder."

I braced myself, one hand gripping her hip, my thumb pressing into the soft flesh at her waist. Then I moved—slow at first, deep, withdrawing until only the tip remained inside before thrusting back in completely.

Her sounds came in broken waves—soft gasps turning into moans, moans into breathless cries edged.

The headboard thudded rhythmically against the wall. Her legs slipped from my waist, but I caught her ankles, lifting them over my shoulders. The new angle made her tighter, her entrance stretched wide, and I could see myself moving inside her—my cock glistening with her slickness, each withdrawal pulling her delicate pink flesh along with it.

Her dazed eyes met mine. "Fuck, this feels so good."

Her words spurred me on. I leaned forward, pressing her legs toward her chest until she was nearly folded in half, her knees brushing her own shoulders.

The shift let me go deeper. She let out a sharp cry before biting down on her own hand, tears spilling freely.

I kissed her without slowing. She whimpered against my mouth, her tongue tangling with mine just as her body tightened around me. She was close—I could feel it in the erratic clenching of her walls, the way her muscles fluttered. Her toes curled, her calves pressing against the sides of my head.

I quickened my pace, driving into that soft, swollen spot deep inside her with every thrust. Her back arched violently, her body taut like a drawn bowstring—and then she shattered.

Tremors wracked her as she came, her inner muscles pulsing around me, a rush of warmth spilling from her depths, coating me in liquid heat.

The sensation nearly blinded me. I buried my face in her shoulder, sinking as deep as I could before my own release tore through me. Even as I spilled into her, her body kept milking me, greedy, as if determined not to waste a single drop.

Afterward, she curled against my chest, her breathing ragged, fingertips tracing slow circles on my skin.

"I won’t do it again," she said, her voice hoarse but firm. "No more secrets. No more carrying everything alone. I promise, Daniel. I swear."

I pressed a kiss to the top of her head, inhaling deeply the scent of her hair before making my decision.

"Don’t move," I murmured softly against her ear.

She froze instantly, understanding my intent. "Daniel, are you sure? Once you mark me, there’s no going back. My parents—"

"Your parents don’t get a say," I cut in, tilting her chin up to force her gaze to mine. "You’re my mate. The Moon Goddess chose us. I won’t waste another day worrying about some stranger sitting across from you, pretending they have any claim over you."

Then I marked her. My canines sank deep into the tender flesh where her neck met her shoulder, the bond surging between us like a shockwave, stealing the breath from both our lungs.

Her body arched against mine, a sharp gasp tearing from her throat as warmth flooded every nerve in my body.

It was done. She was truly mine. Claimed. Untouchable by anyone else.

Anna’s fingers trembled as they brushed over the mark, and she let out a breathless laugh. "That feels... incredible."

We stayed tangled together, her heartbeat syncing with mine through the newly forged bond—until the crunch of gravel outside broke the moment. Car doors slammed. Voices carried.

Anna jerked upright. "My parents are back."

She scrambled to dress while I pulled on my shirt, and we hurried out of the bedroom into the living room just as the front door swung open.

Anna’s mother stepped inside first, arms laden with shopping bags. The moment she saw me, she stiffened.

"Who are you?" she demanded sharply. "What are you doing in my house?"

Anna hovered behind me, her fingers twisting into the back of my jacket, gripping the fabric tightly.

"I’m Anna’s boyfriend," I answered, keeping my tone calm, respectful, steady. "We had an argument before she left. I drove over to work things out. I wanted to bring her home."

Anna’s mother stood motionless, arms crossed as she turned to her mate with a look that clearly said: Handle this.

Anna’s father lowered himself into the armchair with deliberate slowness, his cane propped against its back. Those sharp, calculating eyes studied me with unhurried precision.

"Thank you for making the drive," he said, voice laced with authority. "But Anna’s future is already settled. Alpha Hale has shown interest in our daughter, and we’ve given him our word. So I must ask you to leave."

I met his gaze without flinching. "I respect your position. But if you’ll permit me, I’d like to bring a few things in from my car—as a gesture of goodwill."

Anna’s mother scoffed, barely masking her disdain. Her father considered me for a moment before giving a dismissive nod.

I walked back to the car and popped the trunk.

I’d come prepared.

Three crates of aged whiskey and hand-rolled cigars—the kind where a single crate cost more than most wolves made in a month. The cigars were a brand her father would recognize immediately.

Anna’s father straightened in his seat. His gaze flicked from the cigars to me, and I watched as his expression shifted from indifference to genuine interest.

Then, I pulled out a velvet jewelry box and flipped it open.

An expensive diamond necklace lay inside. Under the light, the sizable stones cast fractured reflections across the ceiling. Anna’s mother’s lips parted slightly, her eyes locked onto the glittering display.

I brought in more gifts—higher quality, more extrIvygant. The stack of cash I placed on the kitchen table probably eclipsed this household’s annual income.

Anna’s mother was already holding the necklace to her throat, turning toward the hallway mirror, all traces of hostility from five minutes ago completely erased. Her father picked up a cigar, rolling it between his fingers, inhaling the rich aroma of the wrapper before giving a slow, approving nod.

"My name is Daniel Wilson," I said. "Beta to Dominic Voss of the Bloodmoon Pack."

Anna’s father stiffened in his chair. Her mother spun around, the necklace now draped over her collarbones, diamonds catching the light.

They knew, of course.

The Bloodmoon Pack was the wealthiest, most powerful pack in the territory.

"Anna and I have been together for months," I continued. "She’s my mate. And I intend to provide for her—for life."

The kitchen was silent. Anna’s father slowly set down his cigar, his gaze drifting over the wine, the gifts, and the necklace already draped around his wife’s throat before finally settling on me.

"Well," he said, leaning back in his chair, "I suppose we might have been a bit hasty in arranging things for Anna. It’s your choice now."

"Will Apha Hale have any objections?" I asked. "He might need an explanation."

Anna’s mother spoke up first, her voice bright and warm, as if we’d always been old friends. "Oh, darling, don’t you worry. We’ll handle it. We’ll explain everything, and they’ll understand. These things happen all the time."

She adjusted the necklace in the mirror, admiring the way it caught the light. "What matters most is Anna’s happiness. That’s all we’ve ever wanted."

"Then we’re in agreement," I said. "I’ll take Anna with me today."

And with that, the conversation was over.

Thirty minutes later, we left the house. Anna carried only a small bag and the clothes on her back. She slid into the passenger seat, buckled up, and pressed her forehead against the cold window.

"Thank you," she murmured, her breath fogging the glass.

I reached over and took her hand. She squeezed mine tightly in return as I pulled out of the gravel driveway, heading south—straight into Bloodmoon Pack territory.
