Chapter 89: Chapter 89
Eliza’s POV
She wrapped the last bouquet, took a sip of water, and opened Instagram.
Then she saw Lena’s post.
That damn ring.
Dominic had liked it. And right under it was Lena’s comment: "My Alpha has seriously good taste. I love it."
In an instant, the whole flower shop seemed to lose its scent. The roses, the lilies, the fresh-cut stems—everything turned bland. Eliza clenched her teeth so hard her jaw hurt, and a dull ache twisted in her stomach.
She couldn’t stay there by herself another second.
So she went straight to Samuel’s office.
"Did he really fall for her?"
Samuel leaned back in his chair, a cigarette resting between his fingers. "Why are you asking me?"
"You’ve been his best friend for years. You know how he thinks." Her voice was tight, almost shaking. "Samuel, just tell me the truth. Does he love her?"
"They’re mates. That’s how mates are supposed to be." He flicked ash into the tray. "What’s so surprising about that?"
"That’s not what I mean, and you know it!"
Samuel took a slow drag before answering. "I know exactly what you mean. But Eliza, your chance is gone. The second you left him, it was over."
"I didn’t leave him!" Her eyes burned so badly it felt like they’d split open. "It wasn’t my choice! His mother told me to go. Celeste said I wasn’t strong enough, that I couldn’t handle what the curse would do to him. She said I’d break, that I’d only make things worse—"
"And you still left." Samuel’s voice stayed flat, steady, almost cruel in how calm it was. "His mother told you to go, and you went. Then you bonded with someone else. While he was still alive, still fighting, still waiting for you to come back, you walked away."
Eliza opened her mouth, but no words came out.
"When you bonded with that man, Dominic sent you a gift. Did you know that?" Samuel crushed the cigarette out. "He asked me to deliver it myself. And when that relationship fell apart, when you called him crying, he told me to help you handle the paperwork. No hesitation. Not even for a second."
Her chest felt tight, like she couldn’t get enough air.
"Eliza, if you really loved him, how could you do that to him?" Samuel looked at her with eyes so cold they might as well have been glass. "Every time you come back, every time you lean on him, you tear open wounds that barely closed. Now he’s finally healed. Now he has someone by his side. And this is when you want to come back?"
Not a trace of pity.
Not one bit.
"You think kneeling at the altar and praying for him erases the fact that you abandoned him?" His voice finally sharpened, each word hitting like a slap. "The healer said his curse was terrifying, and you bailed. His inner beast was tearing him apart. He needed someone to hold onto!"
Eliza couldn’t stop crying. Hot tears spilled down her face, blurring the edges of the office until everything looked warped and distant.
Samuel lit another cigarette.
"If you have even a shred of conscience left, stop trying to wreck what he has now." Smoke curled past his face, making his expression look even colder. "Live your life. Stay in your lane. If you can do that, we can still keep things civil."
Her chest felt like it was being squeezed by a pair of iron clamps. Eliza gripped the handrail so hard her fingers hurt, forcing back the sob lodged in her throat as she stumbled out.
She didn’t believe it.
She flat-out refused to believe Dominic Voss didn’t care about her anymore.
Lena’s POV
That afternoon, Lena texted Dominic and asked when he was coming to pick her up.
Instead of replying, he called.
“I’m downstairs.”
“You’re here already?” She glanced at the time, a little surprised. “You came early.”
“Yeah.”
“Give me ten minutes. I’m almost done.”
“Okay.”
She rushed to finish the last thing on her list and slipped out ten minutes before the end of her shift.
She pretty much sprinted toward the car. By the time she yanked the door open, she was breathing hard, but her face was lit up with a grin.
“Why are you in such a rush?” Dominic handed her a bottle of water. The cap was already twisted open.
She tipped her head back and gulped down a few big mouthfuls. “When a girl likes someone, trust me, she can run crazy fast.”
By now, he was used to her random little outbursts. He didn’t even look surprised anymore.
“Put your seat belt on.”
“Where are we going for dinner?”
“Home. I’m cooking.”
She reached over and lightly brushed his cheek with her fingertips, playful and soft. “My Alpha is cooking for me? Seriously, what did I do to deserve a guy this good?”
He frowned at once. “Don’t touch me.”
"There was no helping it." She clicked her seat belt into place and flashed a grin. "Let’s go home."
Sometimes Lena was basically like a kid. One good thing happened, and all the bad stuff from before got wiped clean in her head.
When they got back, Dominic rolled up his sleeves and got busy in the kitchen. Lena sprawled across the couch, chin tilted toward him, just watching. After a second, she pulled out her phone.
"Dominic, don’t turn around. Stay right there!"
He glanced back once, spotted the phone, and got it immediately. He didn’t complain. He just turned back and kept moving between the stove and the counter.
She filmed a short clip. In the video, it was only his back—him stepping from the cutting board to the stove, movements smooth and easy, muscles shifting under his shirt, broad shoulders tapering down to a lean waist.
She posted it to Instagram. She had never put a man on her feed before. Not once. This was a first.
The comments rolled in fast. One coworker wrote: [Who is this? And where do I get one like him?]
Lena burst out laughing.
Even Lily texted her: [So, things with Dominic going well?]
[Yeah.]
[Good.]
They barely talked these days. That night at the clinic felt like something from another lifetime. After that, they had both drifted back into their own lanes.
Lena didn’t ask anything more, and Lily didn’t either.
Dominic set the plates on the table. Garlic butter shrimp, lemon-seared salmon, roasted asparagus, and a pot of meat soup that smelled insanely good.
"Dominic." Lena looked at him, eyes bright. "How am I this lucky?"
He ladled a spoonful of soup into her bowl and lifted one brow. "Hm?"
"I feel like I bought a lottery ticket fully expecting to lose, and somehow I hit the jackpot." She meant every word. At the start, this relationship had felt like a gamble with trash odds. The hand she’d been dealt looked hopeless. But somehow, every single card had landed exactly where it needed to.
She looked at him quietly. "Do I really get to win all this? All the way to the end?"
The cards were in her hand, but he was the one who controlled the game.
"Focus on your cards," he said as he sat down. He peeled a shrimp, then dropped the meat onto my plate.
I grinned. "Deal."
Life had been getting better and better, and honestly, it looked nothing like what I’d imagined when I first signed that agreement. Lately, I couldn’t help wishing it would just stay like this.
After dinner, I washed the dishes. Dominic took a call in the other room, and by the time I finished cleaning up, he was already on the couch with his laptop open, working.
I poured him a glass of water and set it on the table. He looked up at me.
"You’re busy. I’m going to get ready for bed."
I left him alone after that.
When I came out of the shower, the living room was empty.
His bedroom door was shut. I knocked twice, then went in before he could answer.
He was standing by the closet, pulling out a shirt. Leaning against the doorframe, I smiled and asked, "Want to sleep together tonight?"
His throat bobbed once, and his eyes went darker in an instant.
I lightly tapped the frame with my fingers. "If you don’t, that’s fine too. Good night."
Then I turned and headed for my own room, secretly very pleased with myself. It was just a joke, really. A quick tease. Nothing serious.
I lay in bed and scrolled on my phone for a while. Sleepiness crept in, so I tossed it aside, turned off the light, and rolled over.
Then I heard running water, and almost immediately, my mind painted the picture of Dominic in the shower.
My body reacted before my brain could catch up. Heat rushed low through my stomach, spreading fast, and no amount of willpower could make it go away.
I knew that feeling. I’d felt it before—every time we were together, every time he pulled me close, every time I could feel just how badly he wanted me.
The difference was, back then, I could do something about it. Now, ever since that almost-marking incident, he’d drawn a line neither of us had crossed.
But my body didn’t care about lines. I kept replaying what it felt like to have sex with him. I pressed my legs together, tugged the blanket tighter around myself, then turned the light back on.
I couldn’t sleep, so I got up and went to the kitchen.
Dominic was there.
He was wearing his sleep clothes, leaning against the counter as he drank water. His collar hung open, and his lips were still damp.
"You’re still up?" he asked.
Lena walked over, grabbed a glass, filled it to the brim, and downed it in one go.
"What’s wrong?" Dominic could tell right away that something was off.
She set the glass down, lifted her eyes to him, and said, "I want you."
"...What?"
Back then, she could joke about stuff like this and tease him for fun, but she never really meant it. This time was different. Now she was dead serious, and the words felt like they were stuck in her throat, heavy and burning.
"Nothing." She poured herself another glass, drank it clean, then turned and walked away.
She stopped at the bedroom door, took a deep breath, and slowly turned back.
"Dominic."
She walked to him again, cupped his face with both hands, rose onto her toes, and kissed him.
