Chapter 90: Chapter 90

Lena’s POV

His lips were still damp from the water, cool when they pressed against mine.

She kissed him hard, breathing fast, both hands fisted in the front of his shirt. Dominic set the glass aside and gently pushed her back a little.

"What’s wrong with you?"

She clenched her teeth. "What do you think?"

He frowned.

"I know what you’re going to say. You don’t love me." She wrapped her arms around his waist and pressed herself tightly against him. "Fine. Whatever. But you’re my mate, at least on paper. I want you. If I don’t come to you, then who am I supposed to go to?"

She rose onto her toes again and kissed him.

"And if I go to someone else, you’ll—"

He didn’t let her finish. His mouth came down on hers and swallowed the rest of her words whole.

His arm locked around her waist, pulling her backward through the hallway and into her bedroom. They fell onto the bed together, and she tugged at his shirt, desperate to get it off.

The second her fingers touched his bare skin, the feeling shot through her like electricity. Her back arched, her hips lifting toward him on instinct, craving more, craving all of him.

He pulled his shirt over his head and tossed it aside, then slid down the straps of her nightdress, exposing the line of her collarbone. His lips followed right after, kissing her skin.

Her mind went blank. Her hands moved over the hard planes of his back, fingers digging in as she dragged him closer. Kissing wasn’t enough anymore. She wanted all of him.

"Dominic..." She caught his earlobe lightly between her teeth.

"Mm." His voice was low and rough.

Her hands had already said everything she couldn’t force into words, and she reached for his cock, too impatient to wait.

He pulled back just enough to look at her, his eyes dark and unreadable as they swept over her flushed face. "Are you sure?"

She didn’t answer. She just flattened her palm against his waist and tugged him toward her.

The look in his eyes turned hotter. He dragged her nightdress down, baring her hips, and his warm hand slid over her naked stomach, moving lower—

"...Wait." Lena suddenly caught his wrist.

"What?"

She pushed him away and struggled to her feet. A weird feeling had hit her out of nowhere.

"Lena." He didn’t move an inch, his face turning dark. "If you’re messing with me right now—"

Her cheeks burned hot. "I’m not. Get up first. I think my period’s here."

Silence dropped between them.

Dominic stared at her for a moment, then let out a breath through his nose and rolled off to the side.

Lena rushed into the bathroom to check.

She seriously wanted to scream.

Why now? Of all times, why did her body have to stab her in the back right now?

Why not an hour later? Why not tomorrow?

The second she started feeling needy, she should’ve gone to him instead of pacing around the kitchen like an idiot.

She sat there, angry at her own body, then started cleaning herself up.

A knock came at the bathroom door.

"Hey, just go to sleep," she called out. She felt wiped out, like all her strength had been drained.

The next morning, she couldn’t get out of bed. The cramps had her curled into herself, knees pressed to her chest, both arms wrapped tight around her stomach. It was brutal.

Dominic knocked on the door, but she didn’t even have the energy to answer.

He pushed the door open, saw her curled up under the blanket, and walked over. Crouching beside the bed, he pressed a hand lightly to her forehead. "What’s wrong?"

"Cramps," she said, barely able to get the word out.

"Deal with it," he said, then turned and left.

Every time her period hit, it was brutal, but this time? It was next-level, like it was straight-up trying to kill her.

Lena hadn’t expected him to come back so soon. But a minute later, Dominic Voss returned, holding a glass of water and two pills. “Open up.”

She cracked her eyes open and squinted at the pills in his hand. “Shouldn’t you be making me tea or something?”

“You’re hurting this bad and you want to wait for tea to steep?” His tone was flat, but not cold. “Take the pills.”

He set the tablets on her tongue, tipped her head back with one hand, and helped her swallow them.

Then she lay back down and shut her eyes again. A second later, the mattress dipped.

She almost asked what he was doing, but then stopped herself. In the state she was in, there was no way his mind was going in that direction. So she kept quiet.

He stretched out behind her, sliding one arm beneath her head. His warm, solid chest pressed against her back. Then his other hand slipped under the hem of her shirt and came to rest flat over her lower belly.

The heat of his palm spread across her skin instantly. The cramping didn’t vanish on the spot, but it really did start easing up, little by little, and the pain slowly loosened its grip.

She honestly hadn’t seen this coming. Not even a little.

“You’re weirdly good at this,” she murmured.

He rested his chin on top of her head. “I looked it up just now.”

She tried to turn and look at him. “So you don’t have personal experience?”

“No.”

“Eliza never had cramps?”

He caught what she was actually asking. “Ask her yourself.”

“Did you two sleep together?” She knew she shouldn’t have asked, but the question slipped out anyway.

Silence answered her.

“You seriously never did?” She suddenly twisted around to face him, like she’d been revived on the spot. “So what, you two were just in love? No sex at all?”

He looked at her, expression unreadable. “I thought you were dying a second ago.”

“I’m literally dying. Answer my question.”

“No. We didn’t.”

She turned over and pressed his hand hard against her stomach, and a strange wave of relief loosened something in her chest.

It shouldn’t have mattered this much. Everyone had a past. People slept with their partners. That was normal. Basic, even.

But the second she realized he had never been with Eliza—not once, no matter how loyal she’d claimed to be, no matter how much history she’d flexed on Instagram, none of it had ever actually happened—

Lena’s mood lifted on the spot. Even the cramps suddenly felt less brutal.

“Dominic, I don’t care how many relationships you had before me. As long as you’re faithful now, that’s enough.”

His hand moved slowly over her lower abdomen, drawing lazy circles. She leaned back into him. In that position, with his body wrapped around hers, his breath brushing through her hair, his warm palm resting against her skin—

It felt like the most intimate thing two people could share.

More intimate than sex.

“Dominic.” She smiled into the pillow. “I can feel you.”

His hand paused for a brief second.

Then it started again.

She bit her lip, trying not to laugh.

His hand kept the same slow rhythm, steady and warm, and her eyelids grew heavier by the second. She closed her eyes and gradually drifted off.

She felt safer than she ever had before.

Dominic’s POV

Lena’s phone was vibrating.

Reaching over her sleeping body, he picked it up from the nightstand. An unsaved number.

He declined the call.

It rang again almost immediately. Thinking it might be something urgent, he answered.

“Lena, it’s me.”

Reed Calloway. Dominic knew that voice the second he heard it.

"I need to talk to you. Can we meet?"

He turned to look at Lena. She was still curled up against his side, fast asleep, breathing soft and even. Carefully, he slid one arm out from under her head, got out of bed, and took the phone with him into the hallway.

Only after he pulled the bedroom door shut did he speak. "She’s not available. Whatever you want to say, say it to me."

The line went dead quiet. He gave Reed a few seconds, saying nothing.

"That contract my company just signed," Reed finally said, his voice tight, like he was forcing every word out, "it was yours."

"Yeah." There was no point pretending otherwise. "You saved Lena. I told you I’d repay that debt. Now it’s paid."

"I don’t want it."

"That sounds like your problem, not mine. The contract still stands."

"I helped her because I wanted to. I wasn’t asking for anything back."

Dominic’s expression didn’t shift in the slightest. "Lena is my mate."

Reed let out a cold little scoff. "She doesn’t love you."

"Doesn’t matter. She will." Dominic leaned back against the wall, his tone lazy, but the chill underneath it was obvious. "Anything else?"

"The pressure on the Calloway family... was that you too?"

He already knew. He wasn’t asking for the truth. He was checking whether Dominic would admit it.

"Yes."

A beat of silence. Then, "...Why?"

"Because Lena is my mate." Dominic’s voice dropped, low and hard. "Anybody who lays a hand on her pays for it."

Reed went quiet again.

"I pay back everything in kind," Dominic said, his voice turning icy. "Every debt. Every last one. Alpha Reed, I hope this is the last time you ever call my mate. She’s mine. Don’t forget that."

I ended the call.

Then I deleted the record, walked back into the bedroom, and slid in behind Lena again. Even in her sleep, she let out a soft little murmur and instinctively leaned back against me.

I wrapped my arm tighter around her and buried my face in the curve of her neck.

Honestly, I still couldn’t fully figure out what she was to me.

I hated seeing other men hover around her. Hated, more than I wanted to admit, the image of Reid Calloway holding her in that hotel hallway. And I hated even more knowing someone had slapped her while I wasn’t there.

But did I love her? I didn’t know.

Maybe I cared because she was my mate in name, and protecting what was mine was just hardwired into me.

Or maybe my wolf had already made the choice for me. I pressed my face deeper into her hair and closed my eyes.
