Chapter 97: Chapter 97
Lena’s POV
A person’s bottled-up urges had to go somewhere. No way around it.
At work that day, Lena felt like a machine running way too hot, one spark away from blowing. When someone from the department next door came over to collect files that weren’t even due until Friday, she completely snapped and tore the whole stack into tiny pieces. The entire floor went dead silent on the spot.
She almost never lost her temper with coworkers. Seriously, this was a first. Afterward, people kept stopping by to check on her, asking if something had happened.
She took a sip of coffee and forced herself to settle down. "I’m fine. I’ve wanted to rip that department apart for months. They drag their feet forever, then suddenly show up at our desks acting like everything’s on fire and we need to hand things over right now. I just said what everyone else was already thinking."
The whole team backed her up. No one thought she was wrong.
At lunch, she checked her phone.
Nothing.
Not one call. Not one text. Absolutely nothing from Dominic.
He looked that good and was still this useless? Like, what even was that?
By the end of the afternoon, the fire in her gut had died down, then flared right back up again.
She had said she wasn’t going home, and she meant it.
By the time she got to the club Anna had recommended, Anna was already laughing at her before she could even collapse onto the couch.
"So embarrassing," Anna said, not even trying to hide her grin. "Want me to get you some company? A few hot guys to cheer you up?"
Lena pushed herself upright. "Do it."
Anna arched a brow. "For real?"
"You’re paying."
"Deal." Anna didn’t even pause. "If it gets my girl out of this mood, I’ll gladly spend my whole savings."
Lena crooked a finger impatiently. "Then go. Chop-chop."
Anna called the manager over and told him to send in their hottest, tallest males.
The manager spoke into his headset. A few minutes later, five men walked in. Every one of them was over six feet tall, dressed in fitted shirts and tailored pants. Sharp features, solid builds, the kind of looks that seemed custom-made for a runway.
They were all lower-ranking werewolves, probably getting by on club work and not much else. Still, Lena had to admit it—the place definitely had standards.
Anna nudged Lena’s shoulder. "Pick one. Or keep all five. Your call."
Lena looked them over from head to toe. Fair was fair—they were all seriously good-looking. But stacked against Dominic Voss, all power and sharp edges and that unfair level of hot, they dimmed instantly, like little candles trying to compete with a bonfire.
"You want one?" Lena asked, turning to Anna.
Anna flashed a grin. "Girl, you’re the one who needs a little excitement right now. Me? I’ve got Daniel. If he found out, he’d literally murder me. So the best I can do is cheer from the sidelines."
Lena pointed at a broad-shouldered man with a strong build and a high, straight nose. Anna casually picked another one for her too.
The manager waved the other men away, and the two selected ones came over and sat down beside Lena.
She had no clue what she was even supposed to do with hired company like this, so she asked awkwardly, "So... what’s on the menu? What do you guys do?"
"Sing, dance, drink." The man Lena had chosen spoke in a soft, smooth voice, the kind that probably earned him a stupid amount in tips.
"Then sing." Lena had zero interest in getting handsy with strangers. She still had standards, thank you very much.
Anna told the two men to do a duet. They got to their feet and started singing.
Their voices blended shockingly well, smooth and rich, wrapping around each other so perfectly that for a moment, the whole room blurred at the edges. It was the kind of sound that made people forget where they were.
Anna leaned in and bumped Lena again. "Well?"
"Not bad." Lena meant it. Actually, it was really good.
She pulled out her phone, recorded their backs while they sang—clear audio, decent angle—and posted it to Instagram.
Playing with fire tonight.
Anna liked it instantly, then laughed. "You’re not worried he’s gonna storm over here and beat somebody up?"
"If I was worried, I wouldn’t have posted it."
Anna lifted a brow. "So what is it? You want him to come, or you want him to stay away?"
Lena didn’t know the answer to that.
What she did know was that this man could really sing. Tall, handsome, great voice. If some talent scout walked through that door right now, he’d probably get signed on the spot.
"Again," Lena said when the first song ended. Good music deserved another round.
Of course Lena had never expected Dominic Voss to sing for her.
By the fifth song, the door swung open. Dominic stood in the doorway, with Daniel right behind him.
The second Anna saw Daniel, the teasing smile on her face dropped fast. Daniel was her partner. Getting caught ordering male company in a private room while said partner was literally standing at the door? Yeah, that was bad. Very bad.
"Looks like you’re having fun." Dominic let his gaze sweep over the two men, then walked over and sat down beside Lena. His face was calm, almost ridiculously calm, like none of this bothered him in the slightest. "Don’t stop on my account."
"...Keep going," Lena said, forcing the words out.
Anna sat frozen, hands flat on her knees. All the swagger she’d had earlier was gone in an instant. She didn’t even dare look at Daniel.
Daniel stood beside the sofa closest to Anna. He didn’t sit. Didn’t move. His whole body was stiff, arms hanging straight at his sides, jaw locked so tight it looked painful.
Anna stopped breathing.
"Only two?" Dominic crossed one leg over the other, pulled out a cigarette, and slipped it between his lips. Then he cut Lena a sidelong look. "Want more?"
Lena lifted a brow. "Obviously."
Anna probably wanted the earth to open up and swallow her whole.
"Daniel." Dominic lit the cigarette. "Tell the manager to send in everyone else."
Daniel glanced at Lena. She sat there without moving, dead still.
"Yes, alpha." He turned and left.
A few minutes later, the manager came back with a crowd behind him. Every available male attendant in the building filed in one after another until the room was packed.
They lined up in front of Lena like soldiers waiting for inspection, rows of handsome faces staring ahead in blank silence.
But Dominic was sitting right beside her, and not one of them dared smile.
Anna looked like she was being tortured in real time. She kept shooting Lena desperate looks, like a drowning person begging for a lifeline. But seriously, what was Lena supposed to do?
"Is this everyone?" Dominic asked Daniel.
"The manager said if you want, he can bring more up from the other floors."
Dominic turned to Lena. "Had enough?"
Her face stayed blank, but inside, she was practically screaming. A whole pack of young males had been crammed into one private room for her to pick from, while her own mate sat right beside her smoking like he was casually watching some late-night show. The whole thing was beyond ridiculous.
"...Yeah. Should be enough." She cleared her throat, trying to sound steady. "So I can do whatever I want with them?"
"Of course." He exhaled a slow stream of smoke, one arm stretched along the back of the sofa behind her. He wasn’t touching her, not even a little, but his overpowering Alpha presence still filled the room like the gravity had suddenly doubled.
The men standing in front of them all felt it.
Lena could see it plain as day—the way their shoulders locked up, the way they avoided Dominic’s eyes, the sheen of sweat already forming on some of their foreheads.
The Alpha of Bloodmoon Pack, in a room this small.
For any werewolf with even half-decent instincts, it was suffocating.
She swallowed and shot Anna a glance. Anna was frantically signaling at her with her hands. Surrender. Right now. Please.
Lena clenched her teeth.
She had already come this far. No way was she backing down now. If she folded here, she would never live this humiliation down.
Anna cracked first. "I just remembered I have something urgent to deal with. I need to go."
Lena grabbed her by the wrist. "Don’t you dare!"
Anna pried her fingers off and shifted away, giving her a pained little smile. "Lena, babe, you two have fun. Bye."
"Anna!" Lena seriously wanted to strangle her.
This had been Anna’s idea in the first place. Anna had hyped her up, pushed her into it, and now that everything had blown up, she was bailing. Some best friend.
Anna squeezed through the crowd toward the door, where Daniel was standing. Their eyes met for half a second. Anna instantly raised her handbag to cover her face and bolted.
Lena cursed her out viciously in her head.
"One less person to share with you," Dominic said, tapping ash from his cigarette. "Now they’re all yours."
Lena’s fists tightened. Her anger had nowhere to go.
"So?" He looked at her through the haze of smoke. "What are you going to do with them? I’ll watch."
She cleared her throat again. "You leave first."
"Think of it as a learning experience. Tonight’s on me. Call it tuition."
That blank look on Dominic Voss’s face was absolutely killing Lena. She couldn’t tell if he was pissed or genuinely entertained, and honestly, that not-knowing was way worse than either answer.
There were too many people in the room. Seriously, way too many. Too many bodies, too much pressure, too much of that suffocating tension pressing in from every side. A wave of dizziness hit her hard.
How was she supposed to get out of this?
Dominic Voss was definitely not going to let her off easy. That much was obvious. Lena was racking her brain, desperately trying to think of some escape route, when a sudden commotion broke out in the crowd.
One of the male models she had picked earlier started swaying on his feet, like he couldn’t hold himself up anymore. His eyes rolled back, and then he tipped sideways and collapsed against the person next to him.
"He passed out!"
