Chapter 99: Chapter 99

Lena’s POV

Her eyes flew wide open. Every last trace of desire vanished in an instant.

Dominic froze too, then snapped out of it, got out of bed, and started pulling on his clothes. "I’ll be there right away."

Lena rolled off the bed and grabbed her own clothes. Within minutes, they were both dressed and out the door.

The roads were dead empty at that hour. Daniel drove fast, the kind of fast that made the streetlights blur. Fifteen minutes later, they arrived at the pack medical center.

Theodore’s beta was already waiting at the entrance and led them straight to the treatment room. Outside, Celeste sat in a chair, looking worn out, her hands clenched so tightly together her knuckles had gone pale.

And right beside her, sitting there like some dutiful daughter, was the one person Lena absolutely did not want to see.

Why was Eliza everywhere?

She was holding Celeste’s hand, speaking in this soft, gentle voice, like she naturally belonged there. Lena wanted to ask what exactly she was doing here. But yeah, not the time.

On the way over, Dominic had already gotten the details from his assistant. Now all they could do was wait for the healer to finish.

"Don’t worry, Luna Celeste." Eliza slipped a tissue into Celeste’s hand. "Alpha Theodore is strong. He’ll be okay."

"Why are you here?" Dominic asked, voicing the exact question Lena had been swallowing this whole time.

Concern settled over Eliza’s face. "I was working late at the shop. On my way home, I saw the accident happen with my own eyes. I recognized Alpha Theodore’s car, so I came with him straight here."

Of course. What a coincidence. Seriously.

"Thank you." Dominic’s voice was flat, almost cold. "You can leave now."

Eliza shook her head, her eyes drifting to the light still glowing above the treatment room door. "I wouldn’t be able to sleep anyway. Let me stay until the alpha comes out."

Dominic frowned.

"Go home, dear," Celeste said at last, her voice tired but firm. "We appreciate that you stayed, but it’s very late."

"Please, Luna Celeste. I just want to know if he’s safe."

"Theodore’s beta will inform Dominic once he comes out, and Dominic will let you know," Celeste said, her gaze turning cool, nothing like the warmth Eliza had probably been hoping for. "Dominic and Lena are here. That is enough."

She said Lena’s name. Said it like putting her beside Dominic was the most normal thing in the world.

And wow, that felt good. No matter what kind of silent standoff was going on between her and Eliza, on this point, Lena would never lose.

Celeste acknowledged her. That was what really mattered.

Eliza had no room to argue. "Alright. Please take care, Luna. Alpha will pull through."

"I believe he will." Celeste gave a cool, restrained nod.

Eliza nodded back, glanced at Dominic, then at Lena, then looked at Dominic again. "Call me if you need anything."

He gave a vague little grunt in response.

Then she left.

Lena walked over to Celeste, slipped an arm through hers, and sat down beside her. She didn’t say a word, only gave her shoulder a gentle squeeze. Sometimes silence worked better than any comfort speech ever could.

Two hours later, the healer finally came out. Theodore had already been moved into a VIP recovery room.

They went in together. He was awake, propped against the pillows, looking mildly annoyed by all the noise and fuss around him.

The crash itself hadn’t done much real damage—just a few scrapes and bruises. With an Alpha wolf’s healing ability, that kind of injury was basically manageable.

But during the examination, the healer found something off with his heart. He needed treatment, stabilizing herbs, and vascular surgery.

He needed rest. No pack duties, no stress, no pushing himself, absolutely none of that.

"I told you this a long time ago," Celeste said from the edge of the bed, her voice catching with emotion. "Dominic is strong and healthy now. Let him take over the pack affairs, and you step back."

"It’s nothing serious." Theodore waved a hand like he was brushing the whole thing away. "I’m not ready to retire yet."

"You promised me." Celeste’s eyes were red. "You said once everything settled down, we’d travel. We’d go see the world. You promised me."

Theodore took his mate’s hand in his. "I didn’t forget. Once I recover, we’ll go."

The way Celeste looked at him was probably the same way she had when they first bonded—fierce, tender, and full of that desperate unwillingness to lose him. "You better not be lying to me."

"I have never lied to you."

Lena looked at them, and something warm spread quietly through her chest. A mated pair, after all these years, still crazy about each other. Still holding hands. Still making promises like nothing in the world could wear them down.

She stole a glance at Dominic. He had grown up watching this. A home built on real love. An Alpha father who adored his Luna. A bond that time hadn’t managed to dull, not even a little.

That kind of foundation shaped a person. So deep under all his walls, all his silence, all the stuff he kept locked up, there had to be that same depth in him too.

"You two should head home," Celeste said, turning to them. "Sorry for dragging you out this late."

"It’s okay."

"Your body’s still recovering too," she told Dominic. "Get some proper rest. Take Lena home. I’ll stay here with your father."

"Go on." Theodore flicked a hand, shooing them away. "You two hovering around here is making us uncomfortable."

Dominic looked at his father. "Call me if anything changes."

"Will do."

Once they stepped outside the room, Lena slowed for a second. "Are we really leaving?"

"You heard them. They want some privacy." Dominic took her hand. "Let’s go home."

She matched his pace, a small smile touching her lips. "They’re really sweet together."

He didn’t answer, but his hand around hers was steady and warm.

They crossed the hall and headed for the exit. The second they stepped outside, headlights flashed on. Eliza got out of a car and walked toward them.

"Is Alpha Theodore okay?" she asked, looking at Dominic.

"He’s fine." Dominic frowned. "Why are you still here?"

She gave him a soft, gentle smile. "Knowing he was in there, I couldn’t sleep. Now that I know he’s safe, I can go home."

"Alright."

She didn’t even glance at Lena. She turned and got back into her car.

Dominic walked Lena to their car.

“The day she got hurt,” Lena said as they drove away, staring out through the windshield, “you stayed with her at the clinic the whole night. I seriously thought you were still in love with her.”

Dominic shot her a look. “When did I ever stay with her overnight?”

“The car crash.” She turned toward him. “Afterward, she posted a photo on Instagram. A hospital room shot. You couldn’t see anyone’s face, just a man’s leg in the frame, and the caption said, ‘You still care about me.’” She pulled up Eliza’s account, trying to show him, but every post was gone. Wiped clean. Like they had never existed.

She gave a small shrug, but it felt forced. “Whatever. At this point, I can’t even tell what was real and what she made up.”

Dominic kept his eyes fixed on the road, jaw tight. “I already told you, what happened between me and her wasn’t what you think.”

“Then what was it?” Lena asked quietly. “You dated. Everyone knows that. She’s the only she-wolf you ever openly claimed.” She watched his profile carefully, not missing a thing. “You didn’t love her?”

His teeth clenched. “Stop digging up things that are already over. It doesn’t help anything.”

“I’m just asking.” She kept looking at him, her voice calm, but her chest was already tightening. “It’s obvious the two of you were close. Celeste knows her well.” She paused, then added, “So why were you the one dealing with her breakup mess if she was just a friend?”

The light ahead turned red, and Dominic brought the car to a stop.

“She was a friend.” His voice came out flat, stiff enough to cut skin. “That’s all.”

“Even if you told me you two were really together, I wouldn’t judge you. That’s normal.” Lena honestly couldn’t understand why he refused to just say it straight.

Because every sign pointed to something way more complicated than “just friends.” And still, he kept using that word over and over, like if he repeated it enough, it would magically become true.

His dark eyes shifted to her, cold and sharp. “Why do you even need to know all this pointless stuff? Would it make you happy if you knew?”

His tone was icy, so cold it went past pain. It just left her numb, like frost spreading through her whole body.

The light turned green. A harsh horn blared from the car behind them. Dominic looked away and slammed his foot on the gas.

A sharp ache stabbed straight through Lena’s chest.

She didn’t understand why every conversation about Eliza always crashed into this same ugly wall. If Eliza were just some quiet ex who stayed in the past and never kept reaching into their lives, maybe Lena could let it go.

Maybe she really wouldn’t need answers.

But Eliza was always there.

Always.

Harassing her with carefully staged Instagram posts. Following her to restaurants. Calling Dominic whenever she wanted. Crying on purpose the second she knew he was looking.

Was Lena just supposed to act blind and pretend none of it meant anything?

She was his mate.

She had every right to know what that she-wolf—who kept hovering between them like a ghost—was really trying to do.

"The harder you try to dodge it," Lena said, keeping her voice flat and steady, "the more it proves she’s not just some friend."

Dominic let out a tired sigh. "I really don’t want to fight with you."

"Yeah, same." She unfastened her seat belt with a sharp click. "But every single time I try to talk, you cut me off. So I’m not making any promises about staying calm. We need space. Right now."

"What are you doing?" He finally noticed her hands moving.

"Going home." Lena grabbed her bag, shoved the door open, and got out. "When I stop wanting to ask questions, I’ll call you."

She slammed the door shut and walked off in the opposite direction.

Dominic watched her through the rearview mirror for a second, jaw tight, then stepped on the gas and drove away. The distance between them stretched wider and wider, until even his taillights were swallowed by the night.

Lena stood alone on the empty sidewalk, letting out a bitter little laugh as she looked around for a cab.

Just then, a black sedan pulled up beside her.

The window slid down.

She glanced at the driver, then froze.

It was that guy from the club. The one she had picked. The man who had mysteriously passed out at the end.
