Crafting Gear From Monster Genes

Chapter 12: Weapon, Lucent Gorge and Spiders

"So, where are we going?" Kreyn asked, munching on his second protein bar.

He and Groza were sitting inside the jet. With them were two military officers as well as one pilot.

"You didn’t even bother to check it? You have full access to the information through your bracelet."

"Hey! I didn’t even have time to eat!" Kreyn protested.

Groza snorted.

"Pffft! Tell that to the pizza you devoured. It didn’t even last five minutes. But, alright, we’re heading to Lucent Gorge, or more precisely, to the rocky peak to the right of it, full of caves with Green-Tipped Spiders."

"Spiders?" Kreyn shot her a look. "You should’ve warned me about that. What would you do if I had arachnophobia?"

"Don’t be silly, you’re definitely not the type to be afraid of any insects."

Kreyn rolled his eyes.

"But why do we need to go to the spiders?"

"We need their egg," Groza smirked. "Or rather, their queen’s egg. Not the one she laid, but the egg from which she’s supposed to spawn."

For a moment, Kreyn’s eyes narrowed.

"Is that why you were rushing me?"

"Indeed." Groza nodded deeply. "We don’t have much time left. That egg will be the bait for the Anomalous Crystal Crusher. Our best chance is to head to the Lucent Gorge and try to lure it out with the egg."

Kreyn nodded deeply as his gaze fell on the heavy black case next to Groza. It was already in the jet.

"What about this? What is this thing?"

Without saying a word, Groza opened the case with a sweep of her hand, revealing a heavy sword with a long, broad blade. A hollow ran along the blade, with lines radiating from it toward the edges like branches. The base was wide, and the hilt was long enough for a two-handed grip.

’Right...’ Kreyn muttered to himself as he recalled Prima’s heavy rifle. ’You need a weapon to fight monsters. If I didn’t have my arms, what could I possibly do against a sand lizard, let alone a Renegade?’

But at that moment, Kreyn was curious about something else.

"Did the blacksmith make this sword for you?" Kreyn asked, recalling one of the terms of their partnership.

Groza nodded while the two soldiers standing nearby looked at her sword with envy.

’Tsk. If only I had a sword like that... Then I could fight monsters too.’

’Look at this weapon, one swing is enough to cut a dozen of those creatures in half!’

In fact, Groza knew what they were thinking. But she didn’t hold a grudge against them.

’If they had my sword, they wouldn’t even manage to lift it and would die at the first clash. Nothing would come of it.’

Then, she looked at Kreyn.

"Yes. I paid a hefty sum for it."

"Can I take a look?" Kreyn asked out of sheer curiosity.

A sly smirk formed on her face.

"Of course. Who am I to refuse you?"

Kreyn touched the hilt of the sword, his eyes flashing.

[Wrath of Thunder

[Tier: I

[Description: A sword forged from a rare metal gathered from the thunder mountain, where lightning strikes are virtually constant. This gives the sword not only impressive sharpness and durability but also the ability to channel energy into electrical discharges for powerful attacks. Its main drawback is its weight, which is significantly greater than that of other swords of this size.]

It was important to Groza to hear what Kreyn had to say. He was a blacksmith as well, and perhaps he would make some gear for him if everything went well.

But the curiosity in Kreyn’s eyes quickly faded.

’No Cells, no Sockets? What a piece of garbage is this?’

Groza couldn’t read minds, but she saw the emptiness in his gaze, where only disappointment remained.

’W-What? Why is he looking at my sword like that? I paid tens of thousands of credits for this sword!’

"Yeah..." Kreyn nodded. "It’s a good sword. I’m sure you’ve defeated quite a few monsters with it."

Without saying another word, Kreyn returned to his seat and silently opened another protein bar.

The two officers exchanged glances as they witnessed his reaction as well. No one had expected that.

Kreyn as well.

’Hmm, I knew I wasn’t the only Hunter who could craft gear. Otherwise, all Hunters would have to fight with their bare fists or use simple swords, spears, and rifles. That’s not at all effective against strong monsters.’

Crunch.

’But it seems I overestimated all the other blacksmiths. Why does this sword have no special features or potential for growth? It’s just a piece of heavy metal that can convert energy into lightning.’

It seemed as though Kreyn was acting arrogantly, but in fact he was simply comparing himself to other blacksmiths, and he realized he was a beginner. So, he was more disappointed and puzzled than anything else.

Thus, in silence, they set off across the wasteland until Dust Star was no longer visible. But after about an hour, they reached their destination.

"Hmm?" Kreyn looked out the window and saw a bright light in the distance emanating from a gorge running along the dark land.

The light was so intense that, from that height, it was impossible to see anything inside the gorge.

Still, the jet couldn’t land near the Lucent Gorge. It needed higher ground, and the rocky peak to the right was perfect for that.

The blue lights from the engines slowly rose above the surface as they came to rest on a platform near the summit.

"Alright, we’re ready," Groza announced as the captain of their team. "Am I right in thinking that this entire peak is riddled with caves full of spiders?"

The man nodded.

"Yes! Be careful! They aren’t the strongest monsters, but there are a huge number of them!"

"Sure. We know what to do. We’ll get in touch with you when we figure something out." Groza grabbed her case and headed for the exit.

The two soldiers stood at attention.

"Good luck to you!"

Tap.

Kreyn and Groza jumped down to the ground as a gust of cold wind swept past them, along with two spiders standing at the entrance to the caves in the distance.

They watched the humans from a distance and decided to step out of the shadows only after the jet had flown away.

"Krk!" "Krk!"

The spiders made a strange sound as they moved forward. Each was half the size of a human, had four yellow eyes, and their bodies appeared to be covered with a thin metallic layer.

But their most distinctive feature was the green tips on their eight legs, which gave them their name and allowed them to move quickly.

Whoooooosh!

Without hesitation, Groza lunged forward. She gripped her sword with both hands and fearlessly stood her ground against the spiders.

All the spiders had time to do was raise their front legs in defense, but Groza’s sword was already in motion.

The heavy blade slashed the two spiders to pieces.

Groza spun around. A glint flashed across her black eyes as blood dripped from her heavy sword.

"Are you ready?"

Kreyn raised his arms, which trembled the next moment as a red, monster-like flash covered his arms, with sharp tips at the ends of his fingers.

"Yeah, it’s time to get to work."
