Crafting Gear From Monster Genes

Chapter 13: Forge Flame, Spider Genes and Evolution Progress

Step. Step. Step.

Groza headed toward the cave entrance as Kreyn stopped beside the dead spiders. His gaze fell on the faint light emanating from their bodies.

"Do you want to absorb their genes?" Groza asked.

"Yeah, why not? I’m more curious as to why you didn’t do it."

Groza waved her hand dismissively.

"I’ve already passed the stage where the genes of weak spiders could be of any use to me. Maybe when I reach the First Rank, but not now. It’s strange that you’ve only just become a Hunter and already need so many genes."

True, the difference in their experience and stage was significant enough for Groza to be ahead, but how could Kreyn have missed the two genes lying on the ground?

At the moment, Kreyn could use monster genes in two ways, and the main one, of course, was the Gene Forge.

He held out his hand as the light flickered, and the two genes flew toward him.

[Green-Tipped Spider Gene x2 obtained!]

[Green-Tipped Spider Gene (Quantity: x2)

[Tier: I

[Rarity: Common

[Quality: Low

[Features: None.]

Sure, compared to the Stone Garud Gene, there was nothing remarkable about these genes, but he had crafted his boots from the Sand Lizard Gene, which had the same rarity and quality.

Kreyn closed his eyes as the Gene Forge appeared before him.

"Two genes - two new items."

Such were his thoughts and his plan.

If he could craft such useful items as his boots from mediocre genes, then he should take advantage of it. Even if the gear he created wasn’t useful to him, he could sell it for a good price.

At the same time, Groza watched from the sidelines. Their mission was delayed, but it didn’t concern her, as she guessed what he might be doing at that moment.

"I want to create new gear. From the options available to me so far."

However, the Gene Forge was in no hurry to activate, just like the hammer.

[Are you sure?]

"Hmm? Why should I doubt it? Is something wrong?"

Kreyn was confused. He had already created one piece of equipment, one mutation, and one cell. In total, he used his Gene Forge three times, and no problems had arisen before.

[As soon as you use the Gene Forge, it will go into hibernation for three days.]

’Agh...?’ Kreyn blinked in confusion. ’Three days? Isn’t that too long? But... Why didn’t this happen before?’

The next moment, a bright flame ignited on the anvil as a new system window appeared before Kreyn.

[Forge Flame

[Ignition: 1/4 (26%)

[Recovery: 3 days 14 hours. Next charge in 14 hours.

[Resources: 2 Small Genes.]

"Oh, I see. So all this time I’ve been using my flame to create gear?"

[Correct. The Forge Flame regenerates over time, using your life resources as a source.]

"What? This thing is draining my life?" Kreyn grew wary. He liked his abilities, but he wasn’t ready to sacrifice years of his life for just another pair of boots.

[No. Life resources are simply your energy, what you sustain by eating food, drinking water, and getting proper rest.]

"I see. That’s good. So, if I were exhausted and in a difficult situation, then the regeneration of the Forge Flame would be slowed down or even stopped completely?"

[Yes. The Forge Flame takes only what won’t harm you.]

At that moment, Kreyn realized something as his eyes widened.

"Huh, so that’s why I wanted to eat so much. Groza is right, I had a decent meal at that place, but I kept eating and eating. I was hungry, but not that hungry."

Kreyn nodded as his gaze fell on the last line.

"What about resources? What do the Small Genes mean? I don’t remember having anything like that."

[Small Genes:

[Green-Tipped Spider Gene x2.]

Kreyn blinked.

"I see. So it’s just a category? Well, I was right not to expect too much from these spider genes."

Then, Kreyn’s attention returned to the Gene Forge.

"So, can I use these Genes to ignite the Forge Flame? Like, at any time?" Kreyn asked.

He didn’t have a detailed guide he could pick up and read in a few hours. He had to figure everything out as he went along.

[Correct, but I don’t recommend leaving these two genes unused.]

"Hmm? Why?" Kreyn was confused.

[Given the level of your Gene Forge, the Small Genes will lose all their energy in just one hour. If you don’t want to lose these Genes, you should use them right now.]

Kreyn froze for a moment as he realized why the other Hunters weren’t rushing to collect every Gene lying on the ground, and that now he had three choices before him.

He could create something from the Green-Tipped Spider gene, use it to ignite the Forge Flame, or... there was one more option.

Tap.

Kreyn tapped his leg as a new system screen appeared before him. He had seen it once before. In the center was a green orb with a rock inside.

[Stone Garud Cell

[Development: 0%

[Evolution: Unavailable.]

"I can channel energy into the Development, but the Genes should yield much more progress, right? Since I’ll lose them soon and am unlikely to create anything worthwhile, it’d be better to try improving my boots, right?"

Then, Kreyn reached out his hand, giving the order.

"I want to use two Small Genes for the Stone Garud Cell."

[Accepted.]

Thump!

The hammer struck as ripples ran through the air.

At that very moment, two white Genes flew out of the anvil and headed toward the green orb. The Spider Genes shattered into streams of energy, seeping into the cell.

A progress bar appeared beneath the Stone Garud Cell, bringing a smile to Kreyn’s face, but...

Soon, his smile faded away.

[Development Progress: 2%.]

"Agh...?" Kreyn gasped. He was at a loss.

He was clearly hoping for more.

"Wait! I spent two genes and only got 2%?"

The system remained silent. Well, there wasn’t much to say anyway.

"This is a total rip-off?!"

Kreyn was angry, but when his gaze fell on the cell and his boots, he quickly calmed down.

"Hmm, maybe it all comes down to how powerful the evolution will be? And... Huh, aren’t we in the perfect place for this?"

Casting one last glance at the Gene Forge, Kreyn opened his eyes as he saw a frowning Groza.

She looked at her bracelet.

"12 minutes and 35 seconds. What the hell have you been doing?" She stamped her foot on the ground in disapproval.

Kreyn shrugged.

"Well, I ran into a few problems, but I also have a suggestion for you."

"Which one?"

A glint flashed across Kreyn’s eyes as a greedy smirk spread across his face.

"The spiders. There must be a lot of them here, right? So, I think we should clear out this whole lair and take every single gene!"
