Crafting Gear From Monster Genes

Chapter 14: Queen Egg and a Good Sword...?

SLASH!

Another swing of the sword split the Green-Tipped Spider into even pieces.

On the other side of the cave, not far from Groza, Kreyn was fighting his opponent. She was taking on three spiders at once, while he had only one.

True, as the captain and the more experienced Hunter, Groza was supposed to take on the majority of the enemies. She was ready to fight all the spiders, but Kreyn didn’t want to stand aside.

Crack.

The spider’s leg slammed into the red barrier as Kreyn stepped forward, knocking the spider aside with his next punch.

’Hmm, from what I understand, he created these boots, but... his arms are a transformation. Considering he’s a blacksmith and has two development paths, they must fall short of the standard, at least at the early levels. But I still can’t forget the look he gave my sword.’

She clenched her fists.

’Is that how a novice blacksmith is supposed to look at a sword worth tens of thousands of credits? He held back this time, but what will happen in a month? Will he call my sword a piece of garbage?’

At the same time, she was angry at Kreyn, disappointed in her sword, and yet her desire to obtain a weapon crafted by Kreyn only grew stronger.

Tremble!

The light headed toward Kreyn as he absorbed one gene and then the three remaining ones.

"Alright, that’s 29 already!" Kreyn said as Groza blinked, snapping out of her thoughts.

"Hey, maybe it’s time to tell me why you need so many genes? At first I thought you were going to create something out of them, but it doesn’t seem like that’s the case." Groza waved her hand.

In response, Kreyn shook his head.

"Nah. It’d take too long to explain, and right now it’d cost me too much. I just can’t afford it, and, in fact, you’re interested in this too."

"Agh?" Groza was confused.

Kreyn smirked.

"Who knows? Maybe I’ll decide to create something for you after all. If, of course, the right opportunity comes along."

"Tsk. Let’s move on. We’d have been in the main cave ages ago if it weren’t for your desire to get rid of all the spiders!"

Kreyn shrugged and followed her.

After he learned about the Forge Flame, he realized another important thing: the forge charges were more important than they might seem at first glance.

If he were to use a spider gene right now and create an item, he wouldn’t just be spending his last charge, but he’d also be depriving himself of the ability to use the Gene Forge on a more powerful gene.

’I can’t store genes for long. I have to use them almost immediately. I always need to have at least one charge, preferably two, on hand.’

Then, he decided to check something else.

[Stone Garud Cell

[Development: 31%

[Evolution: Unavailable.]

’Already 31%... Not bad, but I only get 1% per spider. Well, I hope that before we encounter the Anomalous Crystal Crusher, I’ll be able to evolve my boots.’

Crack.

The pebble rolled downhill as a new squad of Green-Tipped Spiders came into view in the distance.

They already knew that enemies had made their way into their caves, so they were on guard.

There were five of them right away, and they gathered in one spot, tapping their green tips on the ground as if arguing about something.

"You know, Kreyn. I’m going to say this after all."

Kreyn turned to her. "What?"

"I saw how you were looking at my sword. Now I’ll prove to you that you’re wrong. You still have a lot to learn before you can become a good blacksmith."

Clutch.

She gripped her sword tightly as electrical discharges ran along its long hilt.

The next moment, Groza lunged forward, a trail of electric sparks following her.

Before the five spiders could react, Groza unleashed the full power of her sword, bursting with lightning energy, upon them.

BLAST!

The electrical explosion tore the spiders to pieces as shards of sharp rock flew off in all directions.

Only charred corpses and traces of blood remained after her devastating strike.

With a deadly look, Groza raised her sword and turned her gaze upward to Kreyn, who was sitting on the edge of the slope.

"What do you have to say now?" Groza’s voice was menacing. She demanded an answer.

Now, Kreyn had no choice but to praise her sword.

"I don’t know what you’re expecting, but you won’t hear it." His voice was carefree.

Kreyn pointed at Groza’s sword.

"It’s your power, not this sword’s. It doesn’t matter if your sword could summon fire, lightning, wind, or just kinetic energy, the result would be the same. Give you a massive log to hold, and little would change."

Tap.

Kreyn jumped down, watching Groza as she struggled to find the words to reply.

"What’s the point of your gear if it doesn’t give you anything you don’t already have? Can your sword do something like that?"

Step.

Kreyn stepped forward as his frame trembled.

In an instant, he crossed the ten-meter mark and found himself right in front of Groza.

Her eyes widened as she reflexively tried to step back, but his fist was already in front of her face.

A light breeze swept forward, ruffling her hair.

"You see? Without my arms and boots, I couldn’t do this without extensive training or special abilities. Is your sword capable of that?"

They both knew the answer to that question.

Kreyn headed toward the only passageway while Groza remained standing, staring into space.

"I don’t know what kind of blacksmith sold you this sword, but you’ve been ripped off even worse than with that 20-credit coffee. That’s for sure."

Groza bit her lip until it bled as a heavy grimace spread across her face.

She wasn’t angry at Kreyn’s words, but at the fact that they were true.

Their mission continued, and Groza, as an experienced Hunter, pulled herself together. After all, she understood that she was responsible for Kreyn.

They moved from top to bottom through the caves, approaching the base of the stone peak where the main hall and the Queen Egg were supposed to be.

Along the way, they killed dozens of spiders, and Kreyn’s progress bar reached 63%. It still wasn’t enough, but most of the spiders were near the Queen Egg, they knew that.

"Here we are..." Kreyn muttered, peering out from behind the rocks.

Ahead were more than a dozen Green-Tipped Spiders, wandering around the stone columns, and everything nearby was covered in cobwebs.

Right in the center lay a massive purple egg with bright white beads. From time to time, a pulse ran through the egg as it beat like a heart.

This was the Queen Egg.

But Kreyn and Groza were looking at something else.

Five spiders were guarding the egg. They were much larger than the others. Their bodies were armored, and their front legs had wide blades that resembled sharp shields.

These were the Knight Green-Tipped Spiders.

’They.’ Kreyn narrowed his eyes. ’With them, I’ll definitely have enough energy to upgrade my boots.’
