Like bees flocking to plants with plenty of pollen, the monsters headed toward the resources they needed. Not everyone needed the same resources, as was evident from the way the Lucent Golems ignored the Queen Egg, each sought only what was necessary.
Fortunately or not for Groza and Kreyn, their plan had worked.
Thump! Thump! Thump!
Thudding footsteps echoed from the distance as Groza and Kreyn crouched behind the rocks.
Step by step, a shadow emerged from behind the crystals.
Four long paws carried the agile body forward, covered in thick black fur. The monster’s spine, closer to its shoulders, was arched upward, while its sharp claws left scratches on the ground. The monster had no tail, and its back half was significantly smaller than its front half, though it managed perfectly well to maintain balance while moving thanks to its hind legs.
The head was large with a narrow, bright cyan-colored right eye, while the left eye was permanently closed by a long scar.
The most prominent feature was its jaw. The jaw was heavy and wide. Its teeth resembled bright crystals arranged in three rows, with the second and third rows being shorter but wider than the sharp first row, making this jaw an ideal crusher.
Right now, inside the monster’s jaw was the arm of the Lucent Golem, which grew smaller with every rotation as the monster’s teeth shattered the stone edges into fragments.
Groza gulped.
This was the Anomalous Crystal Crusher.
"Is this the one we were looking for?" Kreyn whispered.
Groza nodded, watching as the Crystal Crusher slowly moved toward the Queen Egg lying in the middle of the gorge.
"Yes. I knew he was still somewhere nearby. Do you see that scar on his left eye?"
Kreyn narrowed his eyes. "Yeah... Is there a story behind it?"
"Half a year ago, I was here with my partner, Clara. She was the one who gave him that wound."
"And now Clara...?" Kreyn turned to Groza, not daring to continue.
He understood everything from her expression and her tightly clenched fists.
"She saved me.... Tsk, I managed to escape, but she didn’t. Back then, we were too weak to handle that bastard."
Before the first tear could fall from her eyes, Groza’s gaze filled with determination and hatred.
"But today I’ll take my revenge. My sword will slice through his thick hide, and my ability will finish him off."
’So all this time, the goal of our mission was revenge?’
Kreyn fell deep in thought as he watched the Crystal Crusher, who still had no idea this was an ambush.
’Good. Better a goal like that than something vague. The main thing is... will we have enough power?’
Apart from the Renegade, Kreyn hadn’t yet encountered any particularly strong monsters. Back then, Prima was with him, and the best they could do was knock the monster off a cliff, but Groza had other plans for the Crystal Crusher.
"What do you want me to do?" Kreyn asked in a calm, steady voice.
Groza gripped the hilt of her sword.
"Help me, Kreyn, help me take his second eye. I’ll owe you one."
"Fair enough." He nodded as his eyes narrowed. "Will you strike first?"
A glint flashed across Groza’s eyes.
"Yes. For now, we’ll wait. As soon as he tries to devour the Queen Egg, I’ll attack, and you’ll follow up."
Kreyn said nothing as his eyes drifted down to his boots.
’With them, we’re sure to succeed, aren’t we?’
Silence.
Groza and Kreyn didn’t say another word.
Only the gusts of wind and the Crystal Crusher’s muffled footsteps could be heard as soon, the monster stopped in front of the Queen Egg.
As if sensing that something was wrong, the Crystal Crusher looked around. His single eye darted to the side, but he noticed nothing but a Lucent Golem wandering in the distance.
"Grrrrh..."
With a low growl, the Crystal Crusher opened his jaws wide, ready to devour the egg.
Crack!
Two long legs burst out of the egg, piercing straight into the Crystal Crusher’s chest.
Two streams of blood gushed out as the massive body began to emerge from the egg. The body itself was several times larger than the egg.
Groza’s eyes widened in disbelief.
The Queen of the Green-Tipped Spiders was born right now, unwilling to become dinner for another monster. She was going to fight for her life.
Groza hadn’t expected this at all, but the rush of thoughts racing through her mind quickly brought a smirk to her face.
"Hell..." she whispered. "You can never predict everything, right? But I know better than anyone what this bastard is capable of."
Tap.
The moment the Crystal Crusher’s hind paws touched the ground, his body jerked and shot forward like a spring thanks to his curved spine.
Before the Spider Queen could react, the Crystal Crusher swept past her on the right, clenching his jaws.
Two of the queen’s legs were clamped in his jaws and, in the next instant, crushed as he ended up behind her at the end of his dash.
The queen’s eight eyes stared at the Crystal Crusher as he devoured her long legs like reeds, while she made the only right decision in her situation.
Whooooosh!
The Spider Queen spun around and ran quickly to the side. A single clash was enough for her to realize she didn’t stand a chance against the Crystal Crusher.
It seemed that Groza and Kreyn were supposed to continue watching from a distance. The Crystal Crusher would waste his strength hunting the Spider Queen, and they could attack later while he was weakened, but that wasn’t the case.
"I didn’t think of that..." Groza muttered, her pupils trembling.
"Hmm?" Kreyn glanced at her.
"I was afraid that after so much time, he’d become stronger, which is why I rushed this mission, but he’s still at the same level. But... If he devours the Spider Queen, his evolution is inevitable!"
In an instant, the whole situation became clear to Kreyn.
"If he kills her, he’ll become too strong, and we won’t stand a chance."
Groza gulped. "Right."
"Then..."
His voice made Groza look at him.
"What are you waiting for?"
For a moment, Kreyn’s eyes became abysses to her.
"You’ll only be satisfied with your revenge if you do it with your own hands, won’t you?"
Groza’s breath caught in her throat.
"You... You’re right!"
At that very moment, she grabbed her sword, and lightning coursed through her body. She leaped off the rocks, attacking the Crystal Crusher from above.
Now, everything depended solely on her and Kreyn.
Either Groza could win this time, or her revenge would destroy yet another partner along with herself.
