A shiver ran through Groza.
Something in Kreyn’s gaze sent a chilling, alluring sensation down her spine.
’A young Hunter shouldn’t have that kind of look... No one his age should be able to look at an experienced Hunter this way!’ Groza thought as she moved forward confidently, surrounded by electric discharges.
Step!
Groza shook her head as she gripped her sword more tightly. It was already raised behind her shoulder, ready to strike.
’Come on, Groza, that’s not what you should be thinking about right now. It doesn’t matter if it was strange or not, Kreyn is right! I’ll only be satisfied once I kill that bastard!’
Her next step, a stomp, shook the ground, forcing the Crystal Crusher, who was about to pursue the fleeing Spider Queen, to turn around.
The Crystal Crusher’s single eye widened as he recognized Groza. He remembered her and Clara, as well as the fact that only one of them had managed to escape back then.
"DIE!" Groza exclaimed, bringing the full force of her sword down on the Crystal Crusher faster than the monster could dodge.
The heavy sword struck the monster’s thick hide, poised to slice through it.
Acting purely on instinct, the Crystal Crusher didn’t try to dodge or block the sword. Instead, he lowered his lower half closer to the ground, moving in the same direction as Groza’s sword.
That way, the sword didn’t meet as much resistance as it should have, and as a result, it left only a cut on the Crystal Crusher’s back instead of severing his spine.
"What the...?"
Whooooooosh!
The Crystal Crusher dug his claws into the ground and swung his lower half, carrying his body to the right in a swift turn.
Dust billowed upward as, in the next instant, the Crystal Crusher’s spine trembled just as it had during the attack on the Spider Queen.
Groza’s face paled as she knew what this meant.
All she could do was raise her sword in defense.
Crack!
Like a cannonball, the Crystal Crusher slammed into Groza, as they crashed into the ground amid a cloud of dust.
The sharp crystal tips protruding from the wall were close to Groza, but she now faced a far greater problem.
Crunch! Crunch! Crunch!
"Argh...?" Her eyes widened in disbelief as she watched the Crystal Crusher’s jaw clench around her sword.
With every movement of the Crystal Crusher’s jaws, new cracks appeared on Groza’s sword.
In just a few seconds, the first fragments chipped off the edge, and that was only the beginning.
’He’s devouring my sword?! It should be strong enough to break his teeth, not the other way around!’
But Groza had no time to be indignant as her emotions quickly turned to panic.
She tried to figure out what she needed to do as the Crystal Crusher clamped down on her and her time was running out.
’If I let go of my sword and use my ability... In that case, maybe I’ll make it in time? Or... What if he’s faster, what if...?’
Suddenly, something interrupted her thoughts as her eyes darted to the right.
Kreyn was already in mid-leap, his knees pressed to his chest and his legs trembling like a spring ready to burst with explosive force. Still, his eyes were calm, as if he knew exactly what was about to happen.
CRACK!
In the blink of an eye, Kreyn’s legs slammed straight into the Crystal Crusher’s jaw. The sheer weight of his boots was enough to knock the monster off balance.
But if something so simple were enough to defeat the Crystal Crusher, this monster would have been dead long ago.
Before the impact could knock him to the ground, he slammed his front paw into the ground, preventing himself from falling.
The Crystal Crusher smirked as he shifted his attention to Kreyn, who was still in midair. Events unfolded rapidly at this critical moment.
The monster was ready to counterattack when suddenly cracks appeared in the ground. The Crystal Crusher noticed this, but didn’t have time to do anything.
CRACK!
The heavy stone pillar burst out of the ground, slamming into the Crystal Crusher like a giant’s hammer.
If Kreyn had attacked with his feet, the Crystal Crusher wouldn’t even have flinched; with his boots, he nearly knocked the monster to the ground, but the stone pillar was on an even higher level.
The raw power slammed the Crystal Crusher into the wall.
RUMBLE!
A rumble echoed through the gorge as pebbles and crystals rained down from above, but Kreyn wasn’t about to let that stop him.
He stepped forward, closing in on the monster to a dangerous distance. The Crystal Crusher’s paws trembled as a glint ran across his sharp claws.
Step!
At that very moment, Kreyn swung his leg, striking the Crystal Crusher’s jaw from the bottom up, mimicking an uppercut.
He did this on purpose, knowing the limits of his ability, and as soon as the stone pillar burst from the ground, it struck the Crystal Crusher’s jaw once more.
BAM!
The Crystal Crusher’s hind paw slammed into Kreyn’s chest, sending him flying to the side.
"KREYN!"
Groza’s scream rang out from the side as she rushed to his aid.
"Drop your sword and kill him!"
Kreyn shouted, pointing at the Crystal Crusher, who was gradually emerging from the wall. Blood was trickling from the corners of his jaw, but he could still fight. His body was capable of withstanding even more.
It seemed as though Kreyn’s words made no sense. Before meeting him, Groza would have ignored such advice, which seemed foolish at first glance, but... recently, Groza realized something.
’My sword is trash, but not me!’
Without hesitation, Groza threw her heavy sword aside as electrical discharges flared to their maximum power.
The Crystal Crusher clicked his jaw as he leaned forward with a hungry expression.
Soon, Groza’s figure was reflected in his single eye.
In a flash of lightning, she crashed into the Crystal Crusher, launching her series of attacks.
She managed to learn a thing or two from Kreyn, even though he was a novice.
For some reason, Kreyn always attacked until there wasn’t even the slightest chance that his opponent wasn’t dead.
’I must do the same!’
That was Groza’s only thought as her fist slammed into the Crystal Crusher’s chest.
BAM! BAM! BAM!
Without pausing even for a fraction of a second, not giving the Crystal Crusher a chance to recover from the previous punch or catch his breath, Groza attacked.
After a while, the Crystal Crusher’s blood mixed with her own as her fists smashed into the blood, but even so, she refused to stop.
Only when her arms went numb did she take a few steps back and, with a heavy sigh, collapse to her knees.
"Gha..."
The gruesome sight of the monster turned into bloody shreds stood before her, but Groza’s eyes shone, and a weary yet happy smile appeared on her face.
Kreyn, who had risen from the ground, grinned as well. Groza thought about her revenge now fulfilled, but Kreyn had entirely different thoughts.
Now, the Crystal Crusher was defeated.
So... What was his gene capable of?
