Crafting Gear From Monster Genes

Nario frowned.

"Stop staring at it so much! Miss Leora, he definitely wants to steal it from us! We shouldn’t have let him touch it!"

Kreyn turned around as a satisfied smile spread across his face.

"Leora, is he always so cocky? I’ve been here less than ten minutes, and my ears are already aching from him."

"Huh." Leora chuckled in a deep voice. "You shouldn’t talk about Nario like that - he gets offended easily. But judging by the look on your face, something about that crystal caught your eye, didn’t it?"

Kreyn nodded. "Yeah, something like that."

[A material mined in several locations around the world from Orazit Ore. The green light emanating from the crystals is proof that they’re full of energy, yet the crystal itself is calm and safe.]

"As you can see, thanks to its properties, Orazit is well-suited for creating both simple equipment and more complex devices."

A few moments later, Kreyn set the crystal aside and asked:

"The analyzer showed that this crystal’s purity is about 75%, right?"

Leora nodded deeply. "Correct."

"How good is that?" Kreyn asked, wanting to know more for the sake of his goal.

"Pffft!" Nario snorted. "Do you see that, Leora? These city folks don’t know a thing! They have to be taught everything!"

Leora stopped him with a gesture as she narrowed her eyes.

"75% is very good. In the mines available to us, the best we can find is 80% purity. Crystals with a purity higher than 80% are considered top quality, and we only have a few of those, right on the border."

Kreyn blinked, mulling over what he’d heard.

’Should I tell her about this? Then again... They mentioned some Rahta Beasts, too - it must have something to do with their access to the mines.’

"You’ve been here a while, so you both must know everything about these mines, I suppose?"

Leora shrugged.

"Pretty much, yeah. What? Are you saying you have some ideas already?"

"Well, when Groza said I was a blacksmith, you figured I could make tools for your people. That’s not exactly true."

Leora frowned.

"What does that mean?"

She took a menacing step forward, making Nario flinch even though he was standing to the side.

"Your abilities are the only reason you’re here and why I set you free. Did you both decide to deceive me? This will cost you dearly!"

Despite her raised voice, which made the miners tremble with fear, Kreyn’s gaze remained calm.

In his eyes, Leora was nothing more than a typical bully, and there were more of them in Sector 18 than cans of cheap soda.

He knew how to deal with them. Being afraid of them was the worst decision one could make.

"I create gear from monster genes, or rare materials when the opportunity arises." He raised the Orazit crystal demonstratively. "And... sometimes I need something special to enhance my abilities."

Leora waved her hand dismissively. "Just like the rest of us. You’re not the only Hunter in the world, boy."

"I know."

She stared intently at Kreyn before her expression softened.

"Are you saying that you can create things that are rare but high-quality, and now you need an Orazit to enhance your abilities?"

Without waiting for his answer, she leaned forward. Her blue eyes fixed intently on his.

"What makes you think we’ll help you? You just showed up here, and you’re already laying down conditions for us?"

Kreyn looked at her.

"The Crooked Horn is a big Node, but you don’t have that many Hunters here. If Hargod really wants me to become one of you, then sometimes it’s worth meeting me halfway, especially now.

"If I improve my ability, who knows what opportunities that will open up for me? At the very least, I’ll be able to craft better gear. Maybe some of it will go to you, that annoying guy, or the miners."

Narioa puffed out his cheeks in displeasure, but this time he didn’t say anything. Right now, Leora was making all the decisions.

She gave him a long look before shrugging.

"Fine, what do you want? What do you need to improve your ability?"

Kreyn pointed at the Orazit crystal again.

"It’s probably not going to be easy, but I need Orazit that’s at least 99% pure."

At the same time, Leora and Nario burst out laughing:

"Hahahahahahahah! Did you hear what he asked for, Nario?"

Nario wiped away the tears that had come from laughing so hard.

"Yes... That’s, that’s unbelievable. 99%? The highest we’ve found in years was 81.5%! You won’t find anything better in our mines! It’s impossible!"

Kreyn narrowed his single eye.

"Really? Are you talking about all the mines, or just your tunnels?"

Leora furrowed her brows.

"What are you getting at?"

Kreyn turned as he looked at the miners working in the distance.

"I don’t believe that in such a large mine, one that has been supplying the Crooked Horn for many years, there isn’t a single deposit with particularly pure Orazit crystals. If that were the case, it would be the most unsuccessful mine in the entire world."

He pointed at the mines.

"It’s all because of the Rahta Beasts you mentioned, isn’t it?"

Leora and Nario exchanged glances. It wasn’t that they were hiding it, but Kreyn had figured it all out faster than they’d expected.

"Yes." Nario placed his hand on his side. "The Rahta Beasts are monsters that inhabit these mines. They also mine Orazit ore because they draw energy directly from the crystals, which makes them stronger."

A cold glint flashed across Kreyn’s eye.

"I assume they’ve taken the most valuable part of the mine for themselves, and you’re left with only the outer section?"

Nario was indignant. "Don’t you dare say that! I and everyone else are working our butts off to expand the tunnels and extract as much ore as possible."

"Yes."

Leora’s brief but clear answer brought that part of the conversation to a close.

"We’re gradually making our way deeper, and the C-Mines are our deepest tunnels at the moment."

For a split second, the corners of Kreyn’s mouth turned up as he looked at Leora.

"Didn’t Nario say that Mine C11 had some problems recently? I think it’s high time we sorted that out and claimed some new territory. After all, I’m a Hunter just like you."
